Production Methods of Van der Waals Heterostructures Based on Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Two dimensional (2D) materials have gained significant attention since the discovery of graphene in 2004. Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have become the focus of 2D materials in recent years due to their wide range of chemical compositions and a variety of properties. These TMDs layers can be artificially integrated with other layered materials into a monolayer (lateral) or a multilayer stack (vertical) heterostructures. The resulting heterostructures provide new properties and applications beyond their component 2D atomic crystals and many exciting experimental results have been reported during the past few years. In this review, we present the various synthesis methods (mechanical exfoliation, physical vapor transport, chemical vapor deposition, and molecular beam epitaxy method) on van der Waals heterostructures based on different TMDs as well as an outlook for future research.

Self-interference polarisation pantographer method to fabricate Pancharatnam-Berry phase optical elements

This study proposed a novel method based on self-interference polarisation pantograph (SiPPer) for fabricating Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) devices. The SiPPer method was composed of a standard Cassegrainian system and a polarization patterned template. Based on the self-interference effect between the ordinary and extraordinary components after the birefringence template, all the polarization information were losslessly transferred to the focal plane on which a photosensitive polarization sample was placed. All PB devices are compatible with this method, including polarization grating, q-plate, q-lens, etc. The SiPPer method indeed lowers the requirement on the exposing source, particularly on the parameters of coherence length and linewidth. To verify and evaluate the properties of the SiPPer method, two typical examples, liquid crystal polarization grating and q-plate, were designed and fabricated according to the standard processing. And the experimental results showed fabulous agreement with the theoretical simulation results.

Mid-Pleistocene drainage rearrangement of the Dadu River in response to plate convergence in southeastern Tibet

Abstract The rearrangement of drainage basins provides critical insight into crustal deformation and geodynamic mechanisms. Near the southeastern boundary of the Tibetan Plateau, the Dadu River abruptly shifts from south- to east-flowing, providing important implications for regional tectonogeomorphic development since the mid-Pleistocene. South of the bend, the headwaters of the Anning River occupy an unusually wide valley. Field investigations show that large quantities of fluvial/lacustrine sediments are widespread along the Dadu and Anning rivers and are exposed at their drainage divide. Detrital zircon U-Pb age patterns confirm that these fluvial/lacustrine sediments are the remnants of the paleo-Dadu River, which strongly suggests that the paleo-Dadu River originally flowed southward into the Anning River. The cosmogenic nuclide burial ages of the lacustrine sediments along the Dadu and Anning rivers suggest deposition of these sediments from separate dammed lakes ca. 1.2 Ma ago, ca. 0.6 Ma ago, and ca. 0.9 Ma ago from north to south, respectively. Provenance and burial-age studies indicate that reorganization of the Dadu drainage occurred within the last 0.6 Ma. We propose that this drainage reorganization in southeastern Tibet resulted from progressive convergence between the India and Eurasian plates during the Pleistocene.

Vacuum level dependent photoluminescence in chemical vapor deposition-grown monolayer MoS 2

Abstract The stronger photoluminescence (PL) in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown monolayer MoS 2 has been attributed to its high crystal quality compared with that in mechanically exfoliated (ME) crystal, which is contrary to the cognition that the ME crystal usually have better crystal quality than that of CVD grown one and it is expected with a better optical quality. In this report, the reason of abnormally strong PL spectra in CVD grown monolayer crystal is systematically investigated by studying the in-situ opto-electrical exploration at various environments for both of CVD and ME samples. High resolution transmission electron microscopy is used to investigate their crystal qualities. The stronger PL in CVD grown crystal is due to the high p-doping effect of adsorbates induced rebalance of exciton/trion emission. The first principle calculations are carried out to explore the interaction between adsorbates in ambient and defects sites in MoS 2 , which is consistent to the experimental phenomenon and further confirm our proposed mechanisms.

The practice of reaction window in an electrocatalytic on-chip microcell

Abstract To enhance the efficiency of catalysis, it is crucial to comprehend the behavior of individual nanowires/nanosheets. A developed on-chip microcell facilitates this study by creating a reaction window that exposes the catalyst region of interest. However, this technology’s potential application is limited due to frequently-observed variations in data between different cells. In this study, we identify a conductance problem in the reaction windows of non-metallic catalysts as the cause of this issue. We investigate this problem using in-situ electronic/electrochemical measurements and atom-thin nanosheets as model catalysts. Our findings show that a full-open window, which exposes the entire catalyst channel, allows for efficient modulation of conductance, which is ten times higher than a half-open window. This often-overlooked factor has the potential to significantly improve the conductivity of non-metallic catalysts during the reaction process. After examining tens of cells, we develop a vertical microcell strategy to eliminate the conductance issue and enhance measurement reproducibility. Our study offers guidelines for conducting reliable microcell measurements on non-metallic single nanowire/nanosheet catalysts.
