The oxidation state of iron and manganese in polymetallic nodules from the Central Indian Ocean Basin

The study of oxidation states of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in polymetallic nodules were carried out by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques. The polymetallic nodules were collected from different locations of the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB). The Mn/Fe ratio allowed the differentiation of these nodules from their origin: “hydrogeneous” or “hydrothermal”. The binding energies of Mn 2p3/2 (ranging from 641.5 to 642.4 ev), Fe 2p3/2 (ranging from 711.0 to 711.8 ev) and O 1s (ranging from 530.2 to 530.9 ev) from XPS reveal that most of manganese is in Mn4+ and iron is in Fe3+ state.

57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic study was carried out on the organic rich sedimentary samples collected at different depth intervals from newly drilled test well Chinnewala Tibba-1 (CT-1) located in Jaisalmer Petroliferous basin India. It is found that iron is mainly distributed in high spin Fe3+ and Fe2+ state in clay minerals. The plot of Fe2+/(Fe2+ + Fe3+) indicates the presence of poor redox conditions in the samples. Results obtained are also compared with those already reported in the literature. This comparison shows that there may exist a correlation between prospecting of the basin, the redox environment in sediments and the nature of iron bearing minerals distributed in the sedimentary sequence.

ABSTRACT The IP391/95 method using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with refractive index detection, has been utilized to determine hydrocarbons group type (saturates, monoaromatics, diaromatics and polyaromatics) in middle distillates. A modification to this method is proposed involving the use of hydrocarbon group type concentrates separated using liquid chromatography as standards in place of single compound and use of area % and response ratio in lieu of area, slope and intercept has been investigated. The results from the above two approaches are compared with standard IP391/95 as well as with the gas oil of known composition prepared by mixing hydrocarbon concentrates. The results from above comparison suggested that the data derived using hydrocarbon group type concentrates was reliable. Appreciable difference was not observed in data derived using area percent response ratio and area slope intercept. The former method was suggested for regular use, as repeatability of area percent was better than the data based on area. Implication of Mossbauer Spectra on the Mixing Model of Eucrites and Diogenites (Resulting in Howardites)

In the present communication, we show that Mossbauer spectra of cumulate eucrites are characteristically different from those of non-cumulate eucrites. In cumulate eucrites, iron occupies only one site, i.e. the M2 site in pyroxene crystal lattice, while it is distributed in both M1 and M2 sites in non-cumulate eucrites. We discuss the importance of asymmetric doublet observed in the Mossbauer spectrum of cumulate body, especially in Vissannapeta cumulate eucrite (fallen in Andhra Pradesh, India), where an appreciable asymmetry was observed. The Mossbauer parameters of diogenite almost exactly replicate those of cumulate eucrites, suggesting that they originate from the same magma ocean. Howardites which are mixed eucrites and diogenites, show iron mineralogy which is different from what one would expect from a physical mixture model. The possible reasons for this difference are also discussed.

Structural Characterization of VGOs from Western Region Crudes by NMR Spectrometry

Abstract Vacuum gas oils from western region crudes were analyzed by 1H and 13C NMR and several structural parameters were estimated. In addition, analytical data was generated by separation techniques. The combination of analytical data with average structural parameter accounted for certain distinctive features of composition of these feed stocks.

Detailed compositional studies of heavy ends of petroleum are necessary to predict what products to expect in what volume from their conversion, in processes like Fluid Catalytic Cracking and Hydrocracking. This communication presents the compositional data on hydrocarbon constituents isolated from deasphalted oils and asphaltics of Bombay High and Assam mix crudes employing liquid chromatography and NMR spectrometry respectively. In addition to paraffinic and naphthenic carbons, various types of aromatic quarternary carbons and number of biaryl linkages were estimated on predominantly polycyclic structures. These detailed studies of polycyclic structures would further help in understanding more fully the chemical changes occurring during conversion processes.
