Identifying the Lineament Structure Cooperatively Using the Airborne Gravimetric, Magnetic, and Remote Sensing Data: A Case Study From the Pobei Area, NW China

Identification of lineament structure plays a vital role in determining the metallogenic area and distribution of the geologic structure. Edge detection methods are mostly used to recognize the lineaments and define the geologic boundaries. Cooperatively using edge detection results of the gravity, magnetic and remote sensing data to recognize lineaments would obtain more geologic information. In this paper, new edge detectors of potential field derivatives are proposed to determine the sources’ boundary, named second tilt derivative, tilt of vertical derivative, and normalized second vertical derivative, respectively. Presented approaches are characterized by producing zero amplitude over sources’ edges and equalizing anomalies from different depths. Compared with original edge detection techniques including other second derivative methods, synthetic examples reveal significant superiorities of suggested approaches in providing more accurate and sharper edges and are especially effective in distinguishing superimposed anomalies. The experiments also demonstrate that the normalization to the edge detectors will make images cleaner and geologic edges more easily captured. Applied to airborne gravimetric and magnetic data in the Pobei area (NW China), the proposed methods display more geologic details and lineaments. Canny, Sobel, and Prewitt operators are applied to extract boundaries of remote sensing image. Lineaments picked by the three different types of data are combined collectively to get a comprehensive lineaments structure interpretation.

Determination of the magnetization direction via correlation between reduced‐to‐the‐pole magnetic anomalies and total gradient of the magnetic potential with vertical magnetization

Abstract The total magnetization of an underground magnetic source is the vector sum of the induced magnetization and the natural remanent magnetization. The direction of the total magnetization serves as important a priori information in the inversion and processing of magnetic data. We demonstrated that the total gradient of the magnetic potential with vertical magnetization constitutes the envelope of the vertical component of the magnetic field for all directions of the Earth's field and source magnetization. The total gradient of the magnetic potential with vertical magnetization and the reduction‐to‐the‐pole field simultaneously tend to achieve maximum symmetry near the correct total magnetization direction. As a result, the total magnetization direction can be estimated by computing the correlations between the reduction‐to‐the‐pole and the total gradient of the magnetic potential with vertical magnetization. The proposed method yields accurate magnetization directions in synthetic model examples. The total gradient of the magnetic potential with vertical magnetization is less susceptible to data noise than transforms which are derived from the high‐order magnetic field derivatives or tensors. The estimation results are slightly affected by changes in the source magnetization direction. In a field example in the Weilasito region (North China), the reduction‐to‐the‐pole fields calculated using the estimated magnetization directions are well centred over the source. The proposed method obtained a more focused magnetization direction than that of a three‐dimensional magnetization vector inversion. The total gradient of the magnetic potential with vertical magnetization therefore provides a novel and accurate approach to determine the total magnetization direction from the total field anomaly in a variety of situations.

High-precision magnetization vector inversion: application to magnetic data in the presence of significant remanent magnetization

Abstract Magnetization vector inversion is essential for obtaining magnetization vector information from subsurface rocks. To obtain focused inversion results that better match the true magnetization distributions, sparse constraints are considered to constrain the objective function. A compact magnetization vector inversion method is proposed that can provide accurate inversion results for magnetic data with significant remanent magnetization. Considering the sparse constraint and the correlation between the three magnetization components with different directions, the L1-norm is modified and introduced into the inversion algorithm to obtain compact results. Furthermore, to reduce the computational cost, a randomized singular value decomposition is used to replace the traditional singular value decomposition and iteratively minimize the proposed objective function. Two synthetic models with different magnetization directions are developed to verify the performance of the proposed method. The results of magnetization vectors obtained by the proposed method are focused and accurate. Finally, the proposed method is applied to igneous rocks with strong remanent magnetization in the Haba River area of northwestern China. The distributions, directions of total magnetization and remanent magnetization of the medium-base igneous rocks are revealed by the sparse magnetization vector inversion method, which provides a wealth of information about the concealed deposits in the area.

A new method to estimate the total magnetization direction from the magnetic anomaly: Multiple correlation

Natural remanent magnetization diverts the direction of the total magnetization vector from the earth’s magnetic field direction. It is important to determine the magnetization direction because the processing and inversion of magnetic usually need the magnetization direction as a priori information. The conventional strategy for estimating the magnetization direction is to compute the crosscorrelation between the reduced-to-the-pole (RTP) field and one magnetic magnitude transform, which is insensitive to the magnetization direction. A new theory and method are proposed that the total magnetization direction is determined by computing the multiple correlation coefficients between the RTP field and the multiple direction-insensitive magnitudes transforms, such as the total magnitude anomaly and the normalized source strength. The linear regression between the RTP field and the direction-insensitive magnitude transforms is established. Then, the correlation is computed by the RTP field and the constructed regressor. The proposed method is tested on synthetic of single and complex models, respectively. Then, the method is applied to the field data of the Yeshan region (eastern China) and the Black Hill Norite (southern Australia). The proposed multiple correlation is an extension of the conventional crosscorrelation method that provides an accurate and robust way to estimate the magnetization direction from the total field anomaly.

Mitigating the effects of remanance in magnetic data processing and inversion

Natural remanance will distort the direction of the total magnetization of the magnetic source away from the direction of induction magnetization, which brings difficulties in magnetic data processing and susceptibility inversion. To solve the problem affected by remanance, a magnetic data processing and three-dimensional inversion strategy under remanance conditions is proposed: A method of the total magnetization direction estimation based on multiple correlations is proposed and applied to the processing of magnetic data, which can eliminate the influence of remanance and oblique magnetization. Moreover, the influence of remanance can be considered in the subsequent inversion of magnetic data. Adding the information on the direction of total magnetization into the inversion can more accurately depict the location of the underground magnetic source and recover the physical property distribution. This strategy is applied to the ground magnetic survey data of a mining area in Jiangsu, China. The effects of remanance and oblique magnetization on the processing and inversion of magnetic data are eliminated, and the physical properties and spatial distribution of underground magnetic bodies are restored, which provides geophysical evidence for the study of geological interpretation.

A new method to estimate the total magnetization direction from magnetic anomaly

The determination of the total magnetization direction is vital of importance for the inversion and interpretation of magnetic anomalies because the total magnetization direction includes the influence of strong remanent magnetization. The cross-correlation method is commonly used to estimate the total magnetization direction, based on the correlation between reduced-to-the-pole (RTP) field and some magnitude magnetic transforms, which are insensitive to the magnetization direction. In this paper, we focus on the correlation between multiple variables and propose a new correlation coefficient method that comprehensively utilizes magnetic anomalies and their transforms to estimate the total magnetization direction. The results of the synthetic examples show that the proposed method performs high accuracy and stability. Finally, to test the suitability of the method, we apply it to estimate the total magnetization direction of a field magnetic anomaly.
