The effect of terrain topography on commonly used resistivity arrays

In this work a study of the effect of surface topographical variations on several dc resistivity arrays is presented. A 2.5-D finite‐element modeling scheme is used to examine the performance of several arrays over buried features that exist below a range of different topographical terrain contexts, such as valleys, hills, and steep slopes. A mesh‐generating algorithm allows a realistic representation of terrain topography. The results confirm that topographical variations can have a significant impact on the field resistivity data values for all resistivity arrays. Further, topographical variations can be treated flexibly using a realistic resistivity forward modeling process. Thus, topographic effects, to the degree they can be modeled, are predictable and should be taken into account when designing surveys and interpreting data.

Three‐dimensional inversion of automatic resistivity profiling data

Abstract Geophysical investigations through mobile multi‐electrode systems, such as the automatic resistivity profiling (ARP) method, can increase the size of the surveyed areas without jeopardizing the spatial resolution of the survey. The representation of the apparent resistivity data in maps corresponding to the different measuring dipoles is sufficient in most routine applications for outlining the buried archaeological structures. In specific cases where a more quantitative interpretation of the apparent resistivity data is demanded, a three‐dimensional resistivity inversion can provide the necessary tool for this purpose. This work investigates the possibilities and limitations of the three‐dimensional resistivity inversion in processing the ARP data. A three‐dimensional finite element smoothness‐constrained inversion algorithm was used. The active constraint balancing (ACB) method was also applied in order to enhance the stability and the resolving power of the inversion procedure. Resistivity models that are commonly encountered in archaeological exploration were used to generate synthetic apparent resistivity data using a three‐dimensional finite element forward modelling program. Inversion of the synthetic data showed that the maximum investigation depth of the ARP method is comparable to the length of the larger receiving dipole and cannot exceed the 2–2.5 m for the particular ARP device tested in this work. Archaeological structures buried within this depth range can be effectively mapped, while the resolution of the subsurface structures is related to the data acquisition parameters. The inversion algorithm was also used to reconstruct the three‐dimensional resistivity distribution from the ARP data set collected from the Andilly archaeological site in France. The results effectively showed that the three‐dimensional inversion can act as a complementary tool in acquiring a more quantitative interpretation model of the buried archaeological features. 4D Active Time Constrained Resistivity Inversion

In this work an improved 4d technique for inverting monitoring resistivity data is examined and compared with the existing inversion schemes. Synthetic data tests illustrate that the time-lapse images of ERT data are affected by inversion artifacts.4D Active Time Constrained (4D-ATC) technique minimize those artifacts while producing realistic inversion models. Several comparative synthetic tests have been made between the techniques. Further, the presented algorithm is tested on field studies. The results demonstrate that this technique produces in most cases improved time-lapse images in relation with existing techniques.

Monitoring of olive oil mills’ wastes using electrical resistivity tomography techniques

Olive oil mills' wastes (OOMW) are one of the byproducts of the oil production that can lead to serious environmental pollution when they are deposited in ponds dug on the ground surface. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) method can provide a valuable tool in order to monitor through time the physical flow of the wastes into the subsurface. ERT could potentially locate the electrical signature due to lower resistivity values resulting from the leakage of OOMW to the subsurface. For this purpose, two vertical boreholes were installed (12m depth, 9 m apart) in the vicinity of an existing pond which is filled with OOMW during the oil production period. The test site is situated in Saint Andreas village about 15km south of the city of Rethymno (Crete, Greece). Surface ERT measurements were collected along multiple lines in order to reconstruct the subsurface resistivity models. Data acquisition was performed with standard and optimized electrode configuration protocols. The monitoring survey includes the ERT data collection for a period of time. The study was initiated before the OOMW were deposited in the pond, so resistivity fluctuations are expected due to the flow of OOMW in the porous subsurface media through time. Preliminary results show the good correlation of the ERT images with the drilled geological formations and the identification of low resistivity subsurface zone that could be attributed to the flow of the wastes within the porous layers.

Combined geophysical methods to the detection and filling certification of cavities

Summary In this paper, we present the results from the implementation and interpretation of a geophysical survey, realized in the extension area of an industrial building. During the excavation of the limestone formation in the area, a void appeared having a horizontal and a vertical extend up to several meters. The objective of the geophysical investigation was the detection of possible additional voids in the remaining area. Based on previous experience in similar geological environment, initially, we used geophysics to detect voids and then, secondly, to verify the completion of the consolidation of the ground after filling the discovered voids. The geophysical data results were very clear since all the methods employed indicated the initial existence of the voids which were then vanished, a fact that verified the success of the consolidation process. However, there were cases where voids were drilled in greater depths than the indicative depth by the resistive body. A possible reason to explain these cases is that resistive body is that apparent resistivity values are affected by deeper voids leading to false resistive targets. The effectiveness of the filling of the cavities has been checked by the repeated geophysical measurements after the end of the filling procedure.

Pattern recognition based on correlograms : A case study in Europos (N. Greece)

The results of the geophysical exploration in one of the cemeteries in the site of ancient Europos (N. Greece) are presented. Several tombs were revealed by the preliminary interpretation of the data during the period in which the field crew was still working in the site. The subsequent excavation verified the geophysical detections. The electrical resistance maps were cross-correlated with signals produced by various structures. The aim was twofold : firstly to remove noise components, and, secondly to point out locations that conceal of structures similar to the one which produced the specific signal in each run of cross-correlation. Correlograms can be seen as band pass filtered versions of the respective maps and their high values as locations where the signal recognizes itself to a certain degree. Indeed, we normalized the correlograms with respect to the maximum value (zero shift) of the autocorrelation function of the signal. Finally, the implication of varying burial depth of the targets is discussed.

INTEGRATED GEOPHYSICAL INVESTIGATION AROUND THE BRACKISH SPRING OF RINA, KALIMNOS ISL., SW GREECE

Integrated geophysical studies were carried out around the brackish spring of Rina, Kalimnos island, SW Greece, in order to determine the special hydrogeological conditions at the survey area. A high-resolution geophysical investigation comprising electrical tomography, seismic refraction and very low-frequency (VLF) electromagnetic induction methods was carried out on a site of saline water contamination. The geological and tectonic settings of the area are evaluated for clarifying the hydrogeological conditions. Further, the saline water intrusion is investigated and its depth is determined. Thus, the limit of fresh water production rate not causing potential pollution problem can be estimated.

A005 BOREHOLE-TO-SURFACE ERT INVERSION Introduction 1 Increasing use is being made of cross-hole ERT to scan between two or more boreholes (Daily and Owen 1991; Daily and Ramirez 2000). However cross-hole tomography cannot be used successfully if the boreholes are too widely spaced.
