Gravity Anomaly around Boam Deposit, Uljin: Implications on Economic Geology

Gravity exploration was conducted to determine the distribution of igneous complex related to lithium pegmatite in the Boam deposit of Uljin, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and the spatial relationship with the regional geology and ore bodies were studied.The gravity exploration result shows that the Boam deposit area is characterized by relatively low gravity anomaly that surrounds the deposit.The Boam deposit is located near the southwest-northeast directional boundary of gravity anomalies where igneous complex (granite gneiss) contacts with the Yuli and Wonnam groups in the southeast, Janggun limestone layers in the east-west direction, and Dongsugok metasedimentary rocks.While the western boundary in the southwest-northeast direction is relatively clear, there may also be unknown igneous complex that are not exposed on the surface at the eastern and southern boundaries because a relatively low gravity anomaly surrounds the deposit.The distribution characteristics of these hidden igneous complex will be used as useful data for predicting the distribution of the lithium pegmatite in the future.

Geochronology, magma source, and geochemistry of igneous rocks in the northern Taebaeksan metallogenic region, South Korea

Abstract Cretaceous igneous rocks are concentrated in the northern Taebaeksan metallogenic region of South Korea, some of which are related to Fe skarns and/or hydrothermal vein Au–Ag deposits. However, detailed studies on the emplacement age and magma source of igneous rocks supplying this metallogenic area are lacking. In this study, we investigated the emplacement age, magma sources, and geochemical characteristics of seven Cretaceous igneous rocks around the ore deposit, comparing them with previous studies. Zircon U–Pb and mica K–Ar age dating indicated that two magmatism events occurred in the Early Cretaceous (~113.7 ± 0.2 to 104.7 ± 0.5 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (~85.8 ± 1.1 to 77.6 ± 0.4 Ma). Negative ɛHf(t) values (−2.57 to −22.05 approx.) and the calculated (2.55–1.33 Ga) suggested that the magma source of these igneous rocks was derived from the Proterozoic crust. Whole‐rock geochemical data indicated that the northern Taebaeksan igneous rocks are mostly high‐K calc‐alkaline series, enriched in light rare‐earth elements (LREEs) and large‐ion lithophilic (LIL) elements but depleted in high‐field‐strength (HFS) elements. Although igneous rocks in the northern Taebaeksan metallogenic region have broadly similar magma source characteristics, they can be classified into two groups: one comprises Early Cretaceous intermediate rocks, some of which are related to Au–Ag mineralization, whereas the other includes Late Cretaceous intermediate to felsic rocks, related to Au–Ag or Fe mineralization.

Study on the Controlling Factors of Li-Bearing Pegmatite Intrusions for Mineral Exploration, Uljin, South Korea

Recently, the demand for lithium (Li) as an energy storage element has increased, owing to the rapid increase in the number of electric vehicles. To meet this demand, Li exploration has become increasingly important. The Boam deposit is located in the Uljin area of eastern South Korea, where several rare-element pegmatites (0.24% Li) intrude the Precambrian Janggun Limestone Formation. In this study, we performed petrographical and geometrical analyses of the rare-element pegmatites recognized in the vicinity of the Boam deposit, through which the Li-mineralization process was identified and the factors controlling intrusion studied. Our results are summarized as follows: (1) the pegmatites exhibit regional and internal zoning based on their mineral assemblages; (2) Li mineralization is restricted to pegmatites; (3) the geometry and distribution of the pegmatites are strongly controlled by fracture, bed contact, and post-intrusive deformation; and (4) exploration should be concentrated in the ENE–WSW-trending zone of the upper part of the Janggun Limestone Formation. These results provide valuable understanding to guide the development of strategies for early-stage mineral exploration in the Uljin area.

몽골 우기누르 지역 철-망간 광상과 타미르골 지역 철 광상의 광체는 먼곤체지 층 내에 렌즈상으로 협재되는 특성을 갖는다. 이러한 광상은 캠브리아 기에서 실루리아기에 이르는 화산 기원의 퇴적형 광상인 타미르골-요루골 광상구에 해당된다. 우기누르 지역의 철-망간 광체와 타미르골 지역의 철광체는 주로 규암과 편암을 모암으로 하여 먼곤체지 층 내에 렌즈상으로 협재되어 있다. 우기누르지역의 편암이 주로 세리사이트 편암인 데 비해 타미르골 지역은 주로 백운모 편암이 나타나는 차이를 갖는다. 또한 우기누르 지역의 광석은 망간이10에서 12% 함유되나 타미르골 지역의 광석은 망간이 1% 이하로 함량이 낮은 특성을 갖는다. 우기누르 철 망간 광상의 철 광물은 주로 자철석, 적철석이 우세하게 나타나고 기타 철 산화물과 황철석이 미량으로 수반되어 나타나며, 망간 광물은 주로스페사틴, 버네사이트가 우세하게 나타나고 기타망간 산화물이 수반되어 나타난다. 타미르골 지역의 철 광석은 자철석이 우세하게 나타나고 적철석이 수반되며 황철석, 철 산화물, 탄산질 철 등이 미량으로 수반되어 나타난다. 우기누르 철-망간 광상에 대한 육상 자력탐사 결과 높은 자기 이상값을보이는 영역이 지표에서 확인된 광체의 방향과 같은 약 $N30^{\circ}W$ 방향으로 나타나며 지표에서 확인된 광체 이외에 지표에 드러나지 않은 부분에서도 연장되는 것이 확인되었다.

트라피체 프로젝트는 현재 탐사단계 중 후기(Advanced exploration)단계의 프로젝트이며 안다우아일라스-야우리 광상구 연변에 나타나는 다양한 반암 광상 중 일부라고 볼 수 있다. 이 광상은 몬조나이트 반암의 관입과 관계가 있으며, 또한, 올리고세 각력 파이프와 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있는 광상이다. 광화작용은 일차 유화광물인 황철석, 황동석, 반동석 및 휘수연석으로 구성된다. 2차 유화광물인 휘동석, 코벨라이트, 다이게나이트가 산출되며 산화동으로서 공작석, 흑동석, 적동석등이 산출된다. 침출작용(lixiviation)이나 부화과정 결과로서, 광화작용은 비전형적인 누대구조를 보여주기도 한다. 각력과 반암이 나타나는 구역에서는 수직적인 누대구조를 보여주는데, 북쪽 인근에서는 침출대, 2차부화대, 전이대 및 초생광화대가 나타나고 광상의 서쪽에서는 산화대 및 혼합대가 좁게 나타난다. 광상의 추정자원은 920 Mt @ 0.41% Cu이며 한계품위는 0.15%로 산정하고 있다. Trapiche project corresponds to the advanced exploration stage which is thought to be a part of various porphyry copper deposits occurring in the margin of Andahuyalas-Yauri metallogenic belt. This deposit is genetically related to the monzonitic porphyry intrusion and Oligocene breccia pipe. Mineralization consists of primary sulfides such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and molybdenite and secondary sulfides such as chalcocite, covellite and digenite. It occurs malachite, tenorite and cuprite as copper oxide. As a result of lixiviation or enrichment process, mineralization shows untypical zonation structure. Breccia and porphyry areas characterize the vertical zonation patterns. In the northern area, lixiviation zone, secondary enrichment zone, transitional zone and primary mineralized zone are distributed in northern area. In the western area of deposit, oxidation zone and mixed zones are narrowly occurred. Inferred resources of deposit is estimated to be 920 Mt @ 0.41% Cu with the cut-off grade of 0.15%.
