Minor elements of some aluminium phosphate zones

La repartition de quelques elements traces (Sc, Cr, Co, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba et certaines terres rares) a ete etudiee dans des phosphates d'alumine de l'ile Christmas (Ocean Indien) et de la region de Kurlan dans le gisement de Belka (U.R. S. S.). La coupe etudiee de l'ile Christmas peut etre subdivisee en trois facies mineralogiques : calcaire, phosphate calcique, phosphate d'alumine. Dans la region de Kurlan seuls le phosphate calcique et le phosphate d'alumine ont ete etudies. Tous les elements traces analyses presentent des teneurs plus elevees dans les phosphates d'alumine que dans les phosphates de calcium. Mais dans les parties superieures des niveaux de phosphate d'alumine, les teneurs sont legerement plus faibles.

Sediments and morphology of deep lakes of Central Tunguska Plateau (Krasnoyarsk krai, Evenkia): on the problem of the Tunguska Event at 1908

The shape of the bottom and the thickness of sediments of small lakes Zapovednoye and Peyungda, located 50-60 km from the supposed epicenter of the “Tunguska Event” of 1908, were studied using echo-sounding and seisimo-acoustic profiling, and their age was estimated using 137Cs, 210Pb, 14C. It was revealed that both lakes have funnel shape with a depth of 60 and 34 m, respectively, and are similar in shape and size to Lake Cheko, which, according to some researchers, is an impact crater formed by a celestial body as a result of the “Tunguska Event 1908”. The examples of lakes Zapovednoye and Peyungda show that the shape of Lake Cheko is not unique to this area. The age of the bottom sediments of lakes Zapovednoye and Peyungda exceeds several thousand years. In the sediments of lakes Zapovednoe and Peyungda, a layer with a high content of terrigenous elements was identified, presumably formed due to the input of disturbed soil layer as a result of the massive fall of trees after the “Tunguska 1908”. Thus, the presence of two deep funnel-shaped lakes near the epicenter of the “Tunguska 1908” much older than 1908, casts doubt on the uniqueness of Lake Cheko, and therefore its impact origin. In addition, according to our estimate, the age of Lake Cheko is no less than 300 years, which contradicts the hypothesis of its origin as a result of the “Tunguska 1908”.

On the border of China and North Korea, there is the only active stratovolcano in the eastern part of Asia – Paektusan (other names are Baitoushan, Changbaishan). It is widely known for one of the largest eruptions in the historical era, which occurred in the 10th century AD. On a volcanic activity scale, the event is rated at seven points, this is the largest eruption in the last millennium. Modern research shows that the eruption of the Paektusan volcano occurred in late autumn–winter 946 AD. This dating is supported by data obtained from the study of an ice core from North Greenland, in which traces of volcanic ash were found. At a depth of 860 mm (the age according to the calculation of annual layers is 942 AD ± 26 years), a layer 2–3 mm thick was found, which differed sharply in color and texture from the rest of the core material. Using a module of confocal X-ray microscopy, an optical section containing an anomalous layer was studied. 2D scanning with a focused beam of synchrotron radiation 20 µm in diameter was carried out. A large amount of microparticles with a high content of zirconium and yttrium was found inside the layer. The possibility of finding traces of the eruption of the Paektusan volcano is discussed.

Chemical and Textural Re-equilibration in the UG2 Chromitite Layer of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa

Variations of mineral chemistry and whole-rock compositions were studied in detail, at millimetre to centimetre intervals, in two vertical drill core profiles through the platiniferous UG2 chromitite layer in the western and eastern limbs of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. Analytical methods included electron microprobe and LA-ICP-MS analyses of the main rock-forming minerals, orthopyroxene, plagioclase and interstitial clinopyroxene. One profile was also studied by synchrotron-source XRF. Statistical analysis of crystal size distribution of chromite was also performed at different levels in the chromitite layer and in adjacent silicate rocks. The results provide new evidence for chemical and textural late magmatic re-equilibration in the UG2 layer and in the silicate rocks at the contact zones. The chromite crystal size distributions imply extensive coarsening of that mineral within the main chromitite seam, which has erased any textural evidence of primary deposition features such as recharge or mechanical sorting of crystals, if those features originally existed. The mineral compositions in chromitite differ from those in adjacent silicate rocks, in general agreement with predictions of chemical re-equilibration with evolved, residual melt (the trapped liquid shift effect). In detail, the geochemical data imply, however, that the conventional trapped liquid shift model has shortcomings, due to the effects of material transport driven by chemical gradients between modally contrasting layers of crystal mush undergoing re-equilibration reactions. In the presence of such gradients, selective open-system conditions may hold for alkalis and hydrogen because of their higher diffusion rates in silicate melts. Differential mobility of components in the interstitial melt can also sharpen the original modal layering by causing minerals to crystallise in one layer and dissolve in another. Detailed trace element profiles by synchrotron XRF reveal an uneven vertical distribution of incompatible elements which implies that the permeability of the chromitite layer may have been significant, even at the latest stages of interstitial crystallization.
