Summary A boulder bed at the junction of the Dinantian Carboniferous Limestone and overlying shales is visible at various localities on and near Treak Cliff, Castleton, Derbyshire. Fissures were developed locally in limestones beneath the boulder bed and these fissures together with cavities in the lower part of the boulder bed were later occupied by hydrocarbons and mineral deposits (chiefly fluorite). The present irregular topography of the area approximates to the surface on which the boulder bed was formed.

Rate of sedimentation of the Gastrioceras cancellatum marine band (Namurian) is deduced from evidence of shell size, population density, and features of the enclosing sediment. Slowest sedimentation apparently coincided with stagnant water conditions. But in a non‐marine succession (Coal Measures) containing trees fossilised upright and rooted in position of growth, the rate of sedimentation (on the evidence of sediments and fossils) is found to be unrelated to degree of water turbulence (sediments and geochemistry). The upright trees were apparently overwhelmed rapidly by sediments deposited from a succession of floods characterised by a wide range of water turbulence.

Hardy, Peter G. & Broadhurst, Frederick M. 1978 04 IS: Refugee communities ofCarbonirola Sparse elongate forms of the non-marine bivalve Carbonirola are associated with an abundance of trace fossils comprising resting traces (Cubichnia) referable to Lockeia, trails (Repichnia) and escape shafts (Fugichnia), all in arenaceous sediments of the Upper Carboniferous. Associated organic-rich argillaceous sediments contain the well-known, abundant and highly variable Carbonirola body fossil faunas. The latter we interpret (in common with other workers) as the remains of shells preserved in what was the typical life environment (characterized by muddy sediments and slow rates of sedimentation). The elongate shells associated with escape shafts we interpret as the only form of Carbonicola capable of escape upwards from burial by rapid sedimentation. For such fugitives from preexisting ‘established communities’ we propose the term ‘refugee community’.

Seasonal Sedimentation in the Upper Carboniferous of England

The sequence of sediments between two Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian A) coals in the Lancashire Coalfield is described with particular reference to Ravenhead Quarry, near Wigan. Part of this succession consists of regularly-bedded laminated sandstone/siltstone units containing non-marine bivalves and their escape shafts. The escape shafts provide evidence of rapid sedimentation. At least four sandstone/siltstone units accumulated within the lifetime of a community of bivalves which eventually died out because of failure of recruitment of new spat. It is concluded that sedimentation was controlled by monsoons. The sandstone accumulated during wet seasons, intervening siltstones during dry seasons.

On the Occurrence of Ankerite in a Band of Non-marine Lamellibranchs from the Lancashire Coal Measures

Abstract The shell-substance of the non-marine lamellibranchs from a band in the Lower similis-pulchra Zone of Lancashire is shown to be ankerite. The same mineral also forms pockets inside certain of the shells, the pockets being developed most frequently in the stratigraphically uppermost part of the spaces between the valves. It is considered that the ankerite in the pockets has occupied spaces left by shrinkage of the original mud-filling of the shells. Chemical analyses, specific gravity, and optical properties of the ankerite are given; its composition closely approximates to (Mg 2 Fe)Ca 3 (CO 3 ) 6 .

Sedimentary Infillings of Fossils and Cavities in Limestone at Treak Cliff, Derbyshire

ABSTRACT Observations of partial and complete sedimentary infillings of fossils and rock cavities at two localities on Treak Cliff, Castleton, Derbyshire, lead to the conclusion that at these localities the present dip of the limestones is largely or entirely depositional in origin. This conclusion agrees, more or less, with claims made in previous publications but, so far as the authors are aware, this is the first time that direct evidence of high initial dips at Treak Cliff has been recorded.
