Using 2D Resistivity Imaging Technique to Detect and Delineate Shallow Unknown Cavities In Al-Haqlaniyah Area, Western Iraq

Basal breccia unconformity layer between Anah and Euphrates Formations in Al-Haqlaniyah area, Western desert, include enormous sinkholes and cavities usually cause severe damages to any kind of engineering facilities built over it. Two-dimensional resistivity imaging has been applied to detect the depth and extent of the subsurface caves at five stations. The dipole-dipole array is chosen with an electrode spacing of 2 meters. 2D Dipole-dipole imaging inverse models show the resistivity values have a big variation between the anomalous background resistivity of rocks and part of cavities. These models showed shallow cavities at 1 to 3 m depth and others at 5to 6 m depth and extending to a depth of 23 m. The unconformity layer is less cohesive than the rocks beneath and above it. So it was the best area for the caves to be formed as a result of dissolving its rocks by leaking rainwater and groundwater. Therefore, it must be a pre-engineering preparation before starting any urban construction of the population in the study area or adjacent areas to avoid risks.

3D Seismic Reflection Study of Al-Akhadeir Area, Southwestern Iraq

This study includes structural and stratigraphic interpretation of 3D seismic reflection data for Zubair Formation (L. Cretaceous) within Al-Akhadeir area, southwestern Iraq (Karbala Governorate). Depending on the 3D seismic reflection interpretation process, and based on the synthetic seismogram and well logs data, two horizons were identified and selected (top and base Zubair reflectors). These horizons were followed up over the entire area in order to obtain structural and stratigraphic settings. TWT, depth, and velocity maps for the base and top Zubair Formation were constructed. From the interpretation of these maps and based on the seismic section, the study concluded that there are some enclosures that represent anticline in the NW of the horizon and syncline in the NE, while the nose structure appears in the middle of the horizon and trends N-S. The horizon represents a progradational with sigmoid configuration.. Other seismic structural phenomena were recognized in this part of the area, such as flat spot, down lap, and top lap, which give indicators of potential hydrocarbon accumulations

2D Seismic Reflection Study for Zubair Formation in East Nasiriya area, Southern Iraq

An interpretive (structural and stratigraphic) study of the two,-dimensional seismic, data of East Nasiriya area (30 km to the south east of Nasiriya oil field within Thi-Qar province, southeastern Iraq) was carried out using Petrel 2017 program. The study area has an importance due to its location between many oil fields, but still without exploration of oil wells. Twenty five seismic lines were used, date back to different types of seismic surveys conducted in the region at different time periods. Also, the seismic velocity surveys of the nearest wells to oil fields, such as Nasiriya-1 and Subba-8, in addition to their sonic and density logs were used. A synthetic seismogram with a good matching with the seismic section was achieved to ensure the identification of the reflectors and reflectivity type (peak or trough) and follow up each one through the whole area of interest. Top Zubair reflector was picked using the composite line to link the seismic sections with each other after enhancing the ties between seismic lines. Time and depth maps were made using velocity maps created from the velocity model. The seismic, interpretation, in the area showed the existence of certain stratigraphic, features, in the ,studied reflector. Some distribution mounds and sand lenses were observed in the study area, which are continuous in more than two-dimensional seismic line in the area. These activity elements provide a reasonable explanation for the distribution of hydrocarbons in the area of study.

Detection of Shallow Cavities Using 3D Resistivity Technique in a Small Site Near Haditha City, Western Iraq

Iraqi western desert is characterized by a widespread karst phenomenon and caves. Euphrates formation (Lower Miocene) includes enormous sinkholes and cavities within carbonate rocks that usually cause severe damages to any kind of engineering facilities built over it. 3D resistivity imaging techniques were used in detecting this kind of cavities in complicated lithology. The 3D view was fulfilled by collating seven 2D imaging lines. The 2D imaging survey was carried out by Dipole-dipole array with (n) factor and electrode spacing (a) of 6 and 2m respectively. The horizontal slices of the 3D models give a good subsurface picture. There are many caves in all directions (x, y, z). They reveal many small caves near the surface. These caves are clearly shown as points with highly variable resistivity values in slices of depths 0.80 m, 1.72 m, 2.78 m, and 3.99 m. The comparison between standard Least-square and robust constrain methods appeared that the inverse model produced by the robust constrain method has sharper and straighter boundaries. The results of both the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional resistive imaging models deal with almost the same spread of subsurface caves in the study area and show a high amount in number, especially in the upper part, white in color oolitic limestone, the second member of Euphrates Formation, of 3.8-8m depth. 2D and 3D resistivity imaging values have Standard Roof-mean square (RMS) error for large inverted models, this confirms that the study area is of high inhomogeneity. This heterogeneity resulted in a large variation in the resistivity of the rock component in addition to the large spread of caves near the surface.

Stratigraphic Study for the Cretaceous-Tertiary period in Qasab-Jawan area in north weastern Iraq by using 2D seismic survey

A seismic study was conducted to re-interpret the Qasab and Jawan Oil fields in northwestern Iraq, south of the city of Mosul, by reprocessing many seismic sections of a number of field surveys by using the Petrel software. Two reflectors, represented by the Hartha formation, deposited during the Cretan age, and the Euphrates formation, formed during the Tertiary age, were delineated to stabilize the structural picture of these fields. The stratigraphic study showed that the Qasab and Jawan fields represent areas of hydrocarbon accumulation. Seismic attribute analysis showed low values of instantaneous frequency in the areas of hydrocarbon accumulation. Instantaneous phase was used to determine the limits of the sequence, the nature of sedimentation, and the type of vanishing, i.e. onlap vs. toplap. Low instantaneous amplitude values were recorded, indicating hydrocarbon reservoirs in the studied area. Various other seismic stratigraphic features were studied , including the distribution mound, flat spot, and channels in the two formations, but they were discontinuous because of the tectonic effects. These activities explain reasonably the distribution of hydrocarbons in the studied area.

Geophysical Evaluation for Evidence of Recharging the Pleistocene Aquifer at El-Nubariya Area, West Nile Delta, Egypt

With ever increasing demands on water resources, Egypt is facing increasing water needs, demanded by a rapidly growing population, by higher standards of living and by an agricultural policys. West Nile Delta represents a new agricultural area where the reclaimed lands are irrigated with groundwater in addition to surface water. The evaluation of groundwater aquifers in West Nile Delta area requires information about the extension, depth and distribution and source of recharging these aquifers. In this work, an integrated study using geoelectric, geomagnetic, hydrogeologic and hydrochemistry investigations has been applied to evaluate groundwater aquifers and to delineate subsurface structures predominant in the basement rocks at El-Nubariya area, West Nile Delta, Egypt. Thirty-five Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) have been applied to identify the subsurface geoelctric layers predominant in the study area. As well as a detailed land magnetic survey has been carried out along the study area using two automatic proton precession magnetometers with an accuracy of 1 nT. These surveys allowed us to establish the subsurface structures and their relation with the detected aquifers. The geoelectric results are illustrated along seven geoelectric profiles and correlated with the lithologic and hydrogeologic data of drilled wells. The third geoelectric layer represents the water saturated zone (aquifer) with thickness varies from 14 m to 58 m, increasing to east and southeast directions. The hydrchemisty anlysis shows that the salinity of the water aquifer ranges from 600 ppm in the southeast to 3900 ppm in the south. The major dominant dissolved salt is Nacl. In the east and southeast, the water type becomes more NaSO4 which refers to dissolution of gypsum in addition to fertilizers. The magnetic data have been analyzed using horizontal gradient and 3D magnetic modeling along the locations of geolectric profiles. The results indicate that the fault structures are trending in E-W, NW-SE and NE-SW directions. These faults confirm the results obtained from the well geolectric interpretation. These fault structures act as recharging paths from lower brackish to upper fresh water aquifers.

3D Seismic Study to Investigate the Structural and Stratigraphy of Mishrif Formation in Kumiat Oil Field_Southern_Eastern Iraq

This thesis is a reflection seismic study (structural and stratigraphic) of a (1200) km 2 area located in the eastern south of Iraq within the administrative border of the province of Maysan province .The study area was interpreted by using 3-D seismic data from Oil Exploration company.The reflector is detected Within Mishrif Formation which is deposited during the Cretaceous age .The seismic interpretation of the area approves the presence of some stratigraphic features in the studied Formation.Some distributary mound and flatspot were observed within the study area, but they are not continuous due to the tectonic effects.These activities elements give reasonable explanation for the hydrocarbon distribution in the area of study and explain why in Kt-2 is wildcat.The study of seismic facies of the picked reflectors distinction type of seismic configuration is progressive seismic facies characterized by Mishrif Formation.Using seismic attribute techniques including instantaneous frequency showed low frequency in areas of hydrocarbon accumulations.Instantaneous phase attribute was detected seismic sequence boundaries, sedimentary layer patterns and regions of onlap and top lap patterns.Amplitude attribute showed that low amplitude value which probably the area of hydrocarbon reservoir.

A seismic study was conducted to re-interpret the Qasab and Jawan oil field in northern Iraq, south of the city of Mosul, by reprocessing and interpreting many seismic sections of a number of field surveys that included the field area. Two reflectors are detected, represented by Hartha Formations which were deposited during the Cretaceous age and Euphrates Formation which was deposited during the Tertiary age in order to stabilize the structural image of this field. The study was achieved by reinterpreting seismic sections using the Petrel program, where time, velocity and depth maps were prepared for the two formations. The study showed that the Qasab and Jawan fields generally consist of a structural closure located at the wells of the northern dome. This closure extends to the south east and deviates towards the east in the form of a structural rift. The study concluded the existence of a transverse fault that cuts Qasab and Jawan structures, forming a structural trap that represents the southern part of Qasab structure.
