Fluorine Substitution at the O-Site Imparts Enhanced Chemical Stability for Garnet-Structured Electrolytes

Garnet-based superionic conductors hold great promise in next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their favorable ionic conductivity and unique stability against Li-metal anodes; however, they still face the challenge of air stability for mass production/practical application. Herein, we identify their structural features and tailor the functional elements to enhance the chemical stability via synergistic control of doping and non-stoichiometry. The optimal composition of Li6.25Ga0.2La3Zr2O11.85F0.15 (LGLZO-0.15F) garnet exhibits great air durability without noticeable impurity accumulation, even during continuous air exposure for 60 days, owing to the high affinity of the fluorine dopant for lithium occupying the octahedral site. Meanwhile, LGLZO-0.15F possesses an appreciable Li-ion conductivity of 8.4 × 10–4 S cm–1 with an activation energy of 0.29 eV. Benefiting from these properties, hybrid and all-solid-state lithium batteries constructed with LGLZO-0.15F electrolytes demonstrate low overpotential, high Coulombic efficiency, and stable cycling performance.

Selenium‐Substitution Asymmetric Acceptor Enables Efficient Binary Organic Solar Cells over 18.3% via Regulating Molecular Stacking and Phase Separation

Abstract Substantial efforts of A–DA′D–A type non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs) molecular design have impelled power conversion efficiency (PCE) of single junction organic solar cells (OSCs) to exceed 19%. Asymmetric geometry strategy, selenium‐substitution, and end‐group engineering are proven to be effective modification methods. Here, two novel selenium substitution asymmetric NFAs, AsymSSe‐2F, and AsymSSe‐2Cl, are synthesized to investigate the synergistic modification effects on device performance compared with symmetric Y6. When blending AsymSSe‐2F with the wide‐bandgap and high crystallinity polymer D18, a remarkable PCE of 18.31% is yielded, and an excellent fill factor of 79.46% is achieved, which is attributed to the broadened absorption, enhanced π – π stacking, balanced carrier mobilities, and fine phase‐separation morphology. Notably, among the reported selenium‐substituted asymmetric NFAs based OSCs, especially combined with the seldom‐reported D18, this PCE is top‐ranked in binary bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. This work indicates that the combined modification of asymmetric geometry and selenium substitution in NFAs is a promising strategy for fabricating high performance OSCs.

Modification on the Quinoxaline Unit to Achieve High Open-Circuit Voltage and Morphology Optimization for Organic Solar Cells

Core engineering plays a vital role in the construction of efficient non-fullerene acceptors. Here, we synthesized a molecule named QX, based on the core of quinoxaline, and by replacing the H atoms with 2-ethylhexyl, 2-(ethylhexyl)thiophene, and 2-(2-ethylhexyl)-3-fluorothiophene groups, we obtained other three non-fullerene acceptors, named QX-EH, QX-TH, and QX-THF, respectively. Compared with QX, the introduction of substitution groups ameliorated the molecular solubility, and their lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels were elevated. Also, the introduction of a thiophene ring in QX-TH and QX-THF enhanced their miscibility with PM6 compared to QX-EH. Furthermore, the introduction of a fluorine atom in QX-THF greatly optimized the blend morphology, leading to efficient charge transport, less bimolecular recombination, and suitable nanophase aggregation in devices. Eventually, PM6:QX-THF-based devices exhibited an impressive power conversion efficiency of 17.45% with a fill factor of 78.99%. This work reveals that modification on the quinoxaline core is effective in tuning the morphology and open-circuit voltage for high-efficiency organic photovoltaics.
