K-distribution reverberation and reliable statistical approach study of sonar data

Performing reliable target detection in reverberation background is a critical problem demanding prompt solutions. Researching on the statistical characterization of reverberation envelope is significantly important for not only the CFAR detection, but also the environment detection and seafloor classification. Identified as a robust statistical model for shallow water reverberation envelope, K-distribution, which is introduced from radar clutter processing to sonar engineering, provides a physical interpretation of its parameters which are relevant to the environment parameters. Because different sonar data processing methods may lead to different results, we have to research on the reliable statistical approaches of processing sonar data, in order to obtain objective and credible conclusions. In this paper, we generate pseudo-random variables of K-distribution and introduce a series of statistical procedures to handle the random data. Then the distribution fitting, the parameter estimation of the distribution and the evaluation of fitting goodness could be made on the basis of these steps. Supported by an underwater experiment, we sampled a set of real data by a planar array. We illustrate the approach using the real data, and verify that the reverberation envelope of shallow water fits the K-distribution model well.

Implementation of fast algorithm of discrete fractional Fourier transform on DSP

In order to meet the requirement of DFRFT(discrete fractional Fourier transform) real-time computation on DSP(digital signal processor),several DFRFT computation methods are compared and the Ozaktas′s DFRFT fast algorithm is chosen to do the implementation processing based on DSP.On the basis of theoretical analysis for the fast algorithm,the computation procedure of fast algorithm is optimized,and the complete statistical result of the implementation is given.The amount of real number multiplication computation can be minimized by the proposed fast algorithm for the given accuracy.Engineering practice proves that this solution meets the accuracy requirement and real-time property of DSP computation.

Rapid Climate Links Between High Northern Latitudes and Tropical Southeast Asia Over the Last 40 ka

Abstract The climate response of tropical Southeast Asia to abrupt climate change originating from high northern latitudes remains poorly understood. Here, marine sediments recovered from the Northwest Borneo Trough are analyzed to trace variations in terrigenous material composition associated with sea level and palaeoflood activities over the past 40 ka. We describe for the first time the influence of sea level change on terrigenous deposition from a tropical island with small mountainous rivers surrounded by narrow continental shelves and the coupling between North Atlantic dynamics and climate feedbacks in tropical Southeast Asia during the Dansgaard‐Oeschger stadials. This study demonstrates that climate oscillations occurring at high northern latitudes can be transmitted to tropical Southeast Asia through the functions of sea level, the East Asian winter monsoon and the Intertropical Convergence Zone. Such information is fundamental to correctly assessing future sea level rise and flood risks in tropical Southeast Asia.

Perception-based fuzzy detection: An exploratory study

For the shallow water sonar systems, the data quantity is usually huge and the characteristics of the background distribution are often time-varying and space-varying. While in the conventional target detection, the distribution model is usually assumed constant and its parameters are often estimated based on the limited reference cells surrounding the cell under test. How to fully utilize the data information and confront the varying background characteristics is one of the important problems for the sonar researchers. This paper describes an exploratory study on perception-based fuzzy detection for sonar data. The detector proposed in this paper firstly acquires the environment information based on the fuzzy perception method. Then it intelligently suppresses clutters and detects targets with the acquired knowledge. The clutter suppression and target detection are carried out with real sonar data. The results validate the clutter suppression capability of the proposed detector.
