Surface pollen distribution in alpine zone of the higher Himalaya: a case study from the Kalla glacier valley, India

In order to understand the relationship between modern pollen spectra and vegetation, we analysed 20 surface sediment samples collected from the alpine zone of Kalla Bank glacier valley, Dhauliganga Basin, India covering an elevational stretch of c. 3600 to 5000 m asl and vegetation zones like the alpine scrub, alpine meadow and alpine barren. This study also provides insights into the vertical pollen transport along the elevational gradient of the glacier valley. Numerical analyses such as cluster analysis (CA), discriminant analysis (DA) and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) are used to explore and discuss the modern pollen deposition patterns in the alpine settings. Despite the inconsistencies observed between modern vegetation and surface palynoassemblages, a good agreement is noticed between CA and DA classifications and DCA ordination results which reveal signature of upslope wind transport. High percentages of pine, cedar, alder and birch pollen grains in the above tree-line surface pollen assemblages are indicative of their upslope wind transport from a lower elevation. The inconsistencies may be attributed to the differential pollen representation between species, differential flowering and pollination of herbaceous taxa. The present study suggests altitude and monsoonal winds might be the two most influential factors that attributed changes in the surface palynoassemblages of the alpine vegetation in the Kalla Bank glacier (Kunti-Banar) valley. Therefore, while interpreting the fossil pollen spectra from any high altitude mountainous zone, long-distance pollen transport should always be taken into account, especially for anemophilous plant taxa.

Regional representation of glaciers in Chandra Basin region, western Himalaya, India

Hamtah and Chhota Shigri are two nearby, well monitored glaciers of western Himalaya, lying in the same climatic zone and driven by the same climatic conditions. In this study, topographical characteristics of both the glacier have been explored to understand the role of topography in controlling the glacier response. Further, their topographical characteristics and possible response towards climatic variations have been compared with each other and also with that of the other glaciers in the basin to find out the suitability of these two glaciers to be considered as representative of the region. Multi sensor and multi temporal remote sensing data have been used to carry out to fulfill the objectives. It is found that being in the same climatic zone, the mean accumulation area ratio of Chhota Shigri is 54% and Hamtah is 11% between 1980 and 2014. In comparison to Hamtah, Chhota Shigri glacier has a small upslope area, low compactness ratio indicating the ability of the glacier to receive direct precipitation and solar radiation. The analysis revealed that the Chhota Shigri glacier has a closer resemblance with the other glaciers in the region than Hamtah glacier. Also, the topographical settings of Chhota Shigri glacier are suitable for recording and reflecting year-to-year climatic variations.

Generation and evaluation of Cartosat -1 DEM for Chhota Shigri Glacier, Himalaya

A digital elevation model (DEM) is a simple representation of a surface in 3 dimensional way with height as the third dimension along with x and y in rectangular axes. DEM has wide applications in various areas like disaster management, hydrology and water management, geomorphology and in urban development. Valuable information about a terrain can be inferred by exploiting a DEM in proper way. Study of DEM becomes very useful for studying mountainous terrain such as Himalaya which is otherwise hard to access due to harsh weather and inaccessibility. Cartosat-l or IRS P5 (Indian Remote Sensing Satellite) is a state-of-the-art remote sensing satellite built by ISRO which is mainly intended for cartographic applications. The satellite carries two panchromatic cameras which are capable of acquiring stereoscopic data along the orbital track. The high resolution stereo data have great potential to produce high-quality DEM. This paper discusses the generation of DEM from Cartosat −1 data for Chhota Shigri glacier (Himachal Pradesh, India). The DEM from Cartosat data was generated both using ground control points (GCPs) and without GCPs. The accuracy of both the DEM has been assessed.

A glacier is a moving body of ice, which moves under its own weight. It moves continuously under the force of gravity. Glaciers form when snow that falls in winter does not entirely melt away in summer. Snow that survives in summer is called ‰rn, which has a higher density (550 kg/m3) and is less bright than snow. Glacier forms over land by compaction and recrystallization of snow over thousands of years. They are highly sensitive to climate change and are good indicators of the energy balance (Oerlemans, 2005). Mountain glaciers are highly sensitive to temperature and precipitation fluctuations and active geomorphic agents in shaping the landforms of glaciated regions which are direct imprints of past glaciations, providing reliable evidence of the evolution of the past Cryosphere and contain important information on climatic variables. But most importantly, glaciers have aroused a lot of concern in terms of glacier area changes, thickness change, mass balance and their consequences on water resources as well as related hazards. The contribution of glacier mass loss to global sea-level rise and increasing number of glacier-related hazards are the most important and current socioeconomic concerns. Therefore, understanding the dynamics of the changes and constant monitoring of glaciers are essential for studying climate, water resource management and hydropower and also to predict and evade glacier-related hazards. The recent advances in the techniques of earth observations have proved as a boon for investigating glaciers and glacier-related hazards. Remote sensing technology enables extraction of glacier parameters such as albedo/reflectance/scattering, glacier area, glacier zones and facies, equilibrium line, glacier thickness, volume, mass balance, velocity and glacier topography. The present chapter explores the prospective of remote sensing technology for understanding and surveying glaciers formed at high, inaccessible mountains and glacier-induced hazards.

Mass change of Gangotri glacier based on TanDEM-X measurements

We analyzed the surface elevation change and geodetic mass change of Gangotri glacier, over the period 2011 and 2013, utilizing high horizontal and vertical resolution topographic data, acquired by bistatic radar interferometry of the TanDEM-X/TerraSAR-X satellite formation. Short term investigation of surface elevation change of glaciers at reasonably good accuracy is possible by using multi temporal TanDEM-X data. The surface elevation change further can be converted into glacier volume change and mass change. The mass change of glaciers is direct response of climate change and hence can be taken as a proxy to study climate change. The study area includes the Gangotri group of glaciers, located in the Central Himalaya, India.

Long-term Monitoring of Surging Glaciers in Upper Shyok Valley, Karakoram Range, India: A Case Study of Rimo and Kumdan Groups of Glaciers

Glaciers in the Himalaya are generally showing a recessional pattern since the little ice age. In contrast to this, some glaciers in the Karakoram are either advancing or stagnant. Such behaviours of glaciers in the region have been termed as "Karakoram Anomaly" (Hewitt Kenneth, 2005; Raina, 2008; Kumar et al., 2015). In the present study, an attempt has been made to analyze the surging phenomena of four selected glaciers viz. Chong Kumdan, Kichik Kumdan, Aqtash and Rimo group of glaciers in the Shyok valley of Karakoram Himalaya; and also to analyze the inter-annual variations in their behaviour by using high temporal resolution remote sensing satellite images acquired from 1975 to 2013. These glaciers responded for surging phenomena differently in different time periods. The present study also fills the gaps of the earlier study of Bhambri et al. (2013) on the Rimo glacier, and demonstrates a different and unique pattern of snout movement. Findings of the present investigation depicts that the short-term variations in surging phenomena of the glaciers can be easily monitored using satellite images acquired from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) Satellite and Landsat Satellite Sensor. Further, as it is well established that the surging phenomenon is a rapid process, we suggest that annual to biennial data should be used to monitor the movements and understanding the dynamics of surging process.

Remote sensing study of snowline altitude at the end of melting season, Chandra-Bhaga basin, Himachal Pradesh, 1980–2007

Glaciers have a direct relation with climate change. The equilibrium line altitude (ELA) is the most useful parameter to study the effect of climate change on glaciers. The ELA is a theoretical snowline at which the glacier mass balance is zero. Snowline altitude (SLA) at the end of melting season is generally regarded as the ELA. Glaciers of Chandra-Bhaga basin in Lahaul–Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh were chosen to study the ELA, using satellite images from 1980 to 2007. A total of 19 glaciers from the Chandra-Bhaga basin were identified and selected to carry out the study of ELA variation over 27 years. This study reveals that the mean SLA of the sub-basin has increased from 5009 ± 61 m to 5401 ± 21 m from 1980 to 2007. The study is in agreement with the reported increase in the temperature and decrease in winter snowfall of North–West Himalaya in the last century.
