Assessment of Soil Erosion at Multiple Spatial Scales Following Land Use Changes in 1980–2017 in the Black Soil Region, (NE) China

Impact of land use and land cover change on soil erosion is still imperfectly understood, especially in northeastern China where severe soil erosion has occurred since the 1950s. It is important to identify temporal changes of soil erosion for the black soil region at different spatial scales. In the present study, potential soil erosion in northeastern China was estimated based on the Revised Universal Loss Equation by integrating satellite images, and the variability of soil erosion at different spatial scales following land use changes in 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2017 was analyzed. The regionally spatial patterns of soil loss coincided with the topography, rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, and use patterns, and around 45% of soil loss came from arable land. Regionally, soil erosion rates increased from 1980 to 2010 and decreased from 2010 to 2017, ranging from 3.91 to 4.45 Mg ha−1 yr−1 with an average of 4.22 Mg ha−1 yr−1 in 1980–2017. Areas with a rate of soil erosion less than 1.41 Mg ha−1 yr−1 decreased from 1980 to 2010 and increased from 2010 to 2017, and the opposite changing patterns occurred in higher erosion classes. Arable land continuously increased at the expense of forest in the high-elevation and steep-slope areas from 1980 to 2010, and decreased from 2010 to 2017, resulting in increased areas with erosion rates higher than 7.05 Mg ha−1 yr−1. At a provincial scale, Liaoning Province experienced the highest soil erosion rate of 9.43 Mg ha−1 yr−1, followed by Jilin Province, the eastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and Heilongjiang Province. At a county scale, around 75% of the counties had a soil erosion rate higher than the tolerance level. The county numbers with higher erosion rate increased in 1980–2010 and decreased in 2010–2017, resulting from the sprawl and withdrawal of arable land.

Impacts of rainfall and soil conservation measures on soil, SOC, and TN losses on slopes in the black soil region, northeastern China

Water erosion significantly affects the productive black soils in Northeastern China. The aim of this study was to analyze the impacts of rainfall characteristics, slope, and soil conservation measures on soil, soil organic carbon (SOC), and total nitrogen (TN) losses and thus to help implement a rational soil loss control strategy. The present study was conducted using sampled soil, runoff, and soil loss data from the plots in the years 2014, 2015, and 2020 when the rainfall characteristics varied greatly. Studies found that soil, SOC, and TN losses on the 18 plots differed greatly, depending on soil conservation measures, slope and rainfall characteristics. Bare and up-downslope (UD) cultivated plots suffered the highest loss rates of soil, SOC, and TN. In 2014, annual loss rates of soil, SOC, and TN on the UD plots reached 5849, 88.55, and 6.84 t km−2 yr−1, respectively. In 2015, soil loss rate (SLR) on the UD plots approached 434.88 t km−2 yr−1 with SOC and TN loss rates of 5.83 and 0.44 t km−2 yr−1. In 2020, the mean SLR on the UD plots was 637.96 t km−2 yr−1 which was lower than that (i.e., 1385.61 t km−2 yr−1) on the bare plots. Annual loss rates of soil, SOC, and TN presented an increasing trend with increasing slope degree. The soil, SOC and TN control efficiencies of contour tillage and hedgerow planting on the 3° and 5° plots were around 90%. The mean SLR on the 53-m terraced plots was two times the tolerable value (i.e., 200 t km−2 yr−1). The size of terrace on steep slopes should be reconsidered, and slope length should be reduced. Bare and UD slopes must be implemented with rational soil conservation measures to control soil, TN, and SOC losses in the black soil region of northeastern China.

Research on the Characteristics of Structure of Drifting Sand Flux and Wind Velocity Profile over Gobi

Through researching on simulation of drifting sand flux's characteristics over Gobi surface in the wind tunnel,the aim is to probe into how the characteristics of Gobi surface effected on the eddy of air current,moreover,on the structure of drifting sand flux and velocity profile in the layers of drifting sand activity.Therefore, it can provide a theoretic gist for the design of sand drifting engineering in the field.This experiment shows that the height of the layer of drifting sand activity is within 20 cm over surface,there is a good relativity between sand concentration and corresponding wind velocity and a distinctive impacting on the air current containing sand in this scope.

Effect of Wind Speed Fluctuation on Sand Transport Rate

Study on relation of wind speed fluctuation with sand transport rate was conducted in wind tunnel under condition of different engineering measures.The fluctuating characteristics of instantaneous wind speed with time are well correlative between different heights in sand barriers,especially between neighboring heights.As the space between different heights increases,the synchronism of instantaneous wind speed fluctuation presents a decreasing degree.The fluctuating amplitude of instantaneous wind speed is closely related to both the character of underlying surface and the motion state of sand grain and sand transport.

The Effect of Soil Conservation Measures on Runoff, Soil Erosion, TN, and TP Losses Based on Experimental Runoff Plots in Northern China

Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP) are the main pollutants affecting the water quality of the Miyun Reservoir, Beijing. However, few studies have been conducted on their responses to implemented soil conservation measures at a slope scale in northern China. To explore the impact of soil conservation measures on TN and TP losses, field monitored data from 18 runoff plots under natural rainfalls were used to analyze the changing characteristics of runoff, soil loss, and nutrient losses during 2014–2019. The results indicated that runoff, soil erosion, as well a TN and TP losses from the plots varied significantly, depending on land use and soil conservation measures. Bare plots suffered the highest soil, TN, and TP losses, followed by cultivated plots without soil conservation measures, cultivated plots with contour tillage, and other plots. Event-averaged runoff and soil loss rates ranged from 0 to 7.9 mm and from 0 to 444.4 t km−2 yr−1, and event-averaged TN and TP losses from cultivated plots were the highest, with values of 39.8 and 3.0 kg km−2, respectively. Bare and cultivated plots were the main sediment and nutrient sources. Among the cultivated plots, the terraced plot had the lowest soil and nutrient losses. The vegetated plots had insignificantly lower soil and nutrient losses. Most TN and TP were lost in particulate status from the plots, especially from the plots with soil conservation measures. Soil conservation measures can effectively prevent TN and TP losses. To guarantee water resource use, contour tillage is preferred for the bare and cultivated lands in the study region.

[Using 137Cs and 210Pb(ex) to trace the impact of soil erosion on soil organic carbon at a slope farmland in the black soil region].

Soil cores were collected from a 28.5 hm2 slope farmland in the black soil region of Northeast China. Based on the sampled data of 137Cs, 210Pb(ex) and SOC, the potentials of applying 137Cs and 210Pb(ex) for assessing SOC redistribution were evaluated, aimed to approach the impact of soil erosion on soil organic carbon (SOC) in black soil region. At both planar and vertical directions, the 137Cs, 210Pb(ex) and SOC in the farmland had similar distribution patterns. Although there were large planar variations in the 137Cs and 210Pb(ex) areal activities and the SOC stock as affected by soil erosion and deposition, the 137Cs, 210Pb(ex) and SOC had similar changing trends over the landscape. Two depth distribution profiles were also used to study the relations of 137Cs and 210Pb(ex) with SOC. At eroded site, the radioactivities of 137Cs and 210Pb(ex) and the SOC mass fraction did not show large variations in 0-25 cm soil layer, but decreased sharply below 25 cm. For the deposition sample, the radioactivities of 137Cs and 210Pb(ex) in 0-100 cm soil increased firstly and then decreased. The SOC mass fraction also had similar depth distribution pattern in this soil layer. The 137Cs and 210Pb(ex) presented positive linear correlations with the SOC, indicating that 137Cs, 210Pb(ex) and SOC moved with the same physical mechanism in the farmland, and fallout 137Cs and 210Pb(ex) could be used to study spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of SOC in the black soil region under the condition of soil erosion.

Using WaTEM/SEDEM to Configure Catchment Soil Conservation Measures for the Black Soil Region, Northeastern China

In recent years, to combat soil erosion, large-scale soil conservation measures have been implemented in the world. Evaluation of the integrated catchment management is urgently required. In the present study, soil erosion and sediment yield under 24 scenarios were predicted, based on the water and tillage erosion model and sediment delivery deposition model (WaTEM/SEDEM). The current catchment management was not ideal, with a catchment soil loss rate (SLR) of 599.88 t km−2 yr−1 and a sediment yield of 240.00 t km−2 yr−1. The catchment management with contour tillage on <3° slopes, hedgerow planting on 3–5° slopes, terracing on 5–8° slopes, and forestation on >8° slopes with trenches along the forest and dams in gullies was the best catchment management to control soil loss, with catchment SLR that was less than the tolerable value of 200 t km−2 yr−1. However, the SLR on the <3° slopes was still higher than the tolerable value. It is not enough to control soil loss by only implementing contour tillage measure on <3° slopes, and other measures should be further implemented on these slopes. In gullies, more measures should be implemented to prevent sediment flowing out of the catchments, in Northeastern China.

Study on Wind Regime Characteristics in the Taklimakan Desert

Wind regime characteristics near ground surface in a region reflect the upper-air circulation status. The upper-air circulation status over the Taklimakan Desert forms under the background of the upper-air westerlies after it is divided and risen by the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Tianshan Mountains and of the thermal effects of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the desert itself. The Taklimakan Desert is the largest sand desert in China, its area is 3.5×104 km2, the dune types are various and their structure is complicated. The winds near ground surface of the Taklimakan Desert are mainly northeast and northwest wind systems due to the effects of the upper-air circulation, and both the affecting regions and the intensity of these two wind systems are significantly different. In this paper, the wind regime characteristics in the Taklimakan Desert are studied using the wind data collected by 17 selected meteorological stations in the desert during the period from 1996 to 2000. Some conclusions are derived as follows: (1)According to Fryberger’s classification of wind-energy environment, the Taklimakan Desert belongs to a low-energy environment in general except the Ruoqiang Region;(2)The change lows of both prevailing east-west and south-north wind systems are significant;(3)The RDP/DP values are higher than 0.5 in the most regions of the Taklimakan Desert, and the wind direction is unimodal or sharp bimodal.
