Permian vegetational Pompeii from Inner Mongolia and its implications for landscape paleoecology and paleobiogeography of Cathaysia

Plant communities of the geologic past can be reconstructed with high fidelity only if they were preserved in place in an instant in time. Here we report such a flora from an early Permian (ca. 298 Ma) ash-fall tuff in Inner Mongolia, a time interval and area where such information is filling a large gap of knowledge. About 1,000 m 2 of forest growing on peat could be reconstructed based on the actual location of individual plants. Tree ferns formed a lower canopy and either Cordaites , a coniferophyte, or Sigillaria , a lycopsid, were present as taller trees. Noeggerathiales, an enigmatic and extinct spore-bearing plant group of small trees, is represented by three species that have been found as nearly complete specimens and are presented in reconstructions in their plant community. Landscape heterogenity is apparent, including one site where Noeggerathiales are dominant. This peat-forming flora is also taxonomically distinct from those growing on clastic soils in the same area and during the same time interval. This Permian flora demonstrates both similarities and differences to floras of the same age in Europe and North America and confirms the distinct character of the Cathaysian floral realm. Therefore, this flora will serve as a baseline for the study of other fossil floras in East Asia and the early Permian globally that will be needed for a better understanding of paleoclimate evolution through time.

A new conifer stem, Ductoagathoxylon wangii from the Middle Jurassic of the Santanghu Basin, Xinjiang, Northwest China

A new permineralized stem, Ductoagathoxylon wangii Gou et Feng, is described from the Middle Jurassic Xishanyao Formation in Naomaohu Town of Yiwu County, Hami City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Northwest China. The fossil stem is preserved with pith, primary xylem, and secondary xylem. The solid pith is heterocellular, and characterized by the presence of regularly arranged clusters of secretory cells at the periphery. The primary xylem is endarch to mesarch, showing annular, helical, and scalariform thickenings on the tracheid walls from the protoxylem to the metaxylem. The secondary xylem is pycnoxylic and exclusively composed of tracheids and parenchymatous rays. The secondary xylem tracheids have mostly uniseriate, partially biseriate, and rarely triseriate alternately arranged contiguous bordered pits on their radial walls. The rays are uniseriate and up to ten cells high. There are five to nine cupressoid pits in each cross-field, arranged in the araucarioid type. Growth rings are distinct and are characterized by a narrow band of latewood. This is the third fossil stem described from the Middle Jurassic of China that is preserved with anatomical structures of pith, primary, and secondary xylem, thus shedding new light on the diversity and evolution of conifers. The occurrence of a traumatic scar in the stem indicates that the tree was probably damaged by an abiotic cause, but it successfully survived through physiological responses to the wound.

Beetle borings in wood with host response in early Permian conifers from Germany

Wood boring represents a common feeding and survival strategy in several lineages of beetles. The larvae of wood-boring beetles hatch and excavate tunnels in wood during their development. The origin and evolutionary history of this life habit, however, remain poorly understood to date, as the fossil record is scarce. We present new silicified conifer wood specimens containing complex borings from the lowermost Permian Manebach Formation of the Thuringian Forest Basin in central Germany and the lower Permian Donnersberg Formation of the Saar–Nahe Basin in southwestern Germany. Additionally, this distinctive type of wood boring is recorded from the Carboniferous/Permian of the Czech Republic, Poland and China. For these borings, the new fodinichnion or agrichnion Pectichnus multicylindricus igen. et isp. nov. is established. It is characterised by several parallel cylindrical tunnels in a longitudinal arrangement, branching from a tangential primary tunnel oriented perpendicularly. The borings contain frass as coprolites made up of undigested wood cells. The conifer trees responded to the borings with callus production that subsequently filled or enclosed the tunnels. This is the earliest record of this specific life habit of ancient insects. The novel wood-boring strategy required structural modification and physiological adaptation; it probably emerged when insect diversity expanded considerably as terrestrial environments changed dramatically.

The terrestrial end-Permian mass extinction in the paleotropics postdates the marine extinction

The end-Permian mass extinction was the most severe ecological event during the Phanerozoic and has long been presumed contemporaneous across terrestrial and marine realms with global environmental deterioration triggered by the Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province. We present high-precision zircon U-Pb geochronology by the chemical abrasion-isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry technique on tuffs from terrestrial to transitional coastal settings in Southwest China, which reveals a protracted collapse of the Cathaysian rainforest beginning after the onset of the end-Permian marine extinction. Integrated with high-resolution geochronology from coeval successions, our results suggest that the terrestrial extinction occurred diachronously with latitude, beginning at high latitudes during the late Changhsingian and progressing to the tropics by the early Induan, spanning a duration of nearly 1 million years. This latitudinal age gradient may have been related to variations in surface warming with more degraded environmental conditions at higher latitudes contributing to higher extinction rates.

Late Permian wood-borings reveal an intricate network of ecological relationships

Beetles are the most diverse group of macroscopic organisms since the mid-Mesozoic. Much of beetle speciosity is attributable to myriad life habits, particularly diverse-feeding strategies involving interactions with plant substrates, such as wood. However, the life habits and early evolution of wood-boring beetles remain shrouded in mystery from a limited fossil record. Here we report new material from the upper Permian (Changhsingian Stage, ca. 254-252 million-years ago) of China documenting a microcosm of ecological associations involving a polyphagan wood-borer consuming cambial and wood tissues of the conifer Ningxiaites specialis. This earliest evidence for a component community of several trophically interacting taxa is frozen in time by exceptional preservation. The combination of an entry tunnel through bark, a cambium mother gallery, and up to 11 eggs placed in lateral niches-from which emerge multi-instar larval tunnels that consume cambium, wood and bark-is ecologically convergent with Early Cretaceous bark-beetle borings 120 million-years later.Numerous gaps remain in our knowledge of how groups of organisms interacted in ancient ecosystems. Here, Feng and colleagues describe a late Permian fossil wood-boring beetle microcosm, with the oldest known example of complex tunnel geometry, host tissue response, and the presence of fungi within.
