Luminescent LaF₃:Yb³⁺/Er³⁺crystals with self-assembling microstructures by a facile ionothermal process

LaF3:Yb3+/Er3+ upconversion (UC) crystals with self-assembling microstructures have been synthesized via a simple one-pot ionothermal method. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used to characterize the samples. The samples crystallize in the pure hexagonal phase and self-assemble into the aligned arrays like a string of pearls. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, the volume ratio of ionic liquid (IL)/water in the mixed solvent and solvent composition on the size and morphology of the products have been studied in detail and a possible formation mechanism has also been proposed. The results indicate that the adoption of water–IL solvent mixture as reaction medium facilitates the particle morphology control. Furthermore, a bright yellowish-green emission can be obtained from the LaF3:Yb3+/Er3+ under 980 nm laser excitation. Such a material shows potential applications in color displays, light-emitting diodes, and optical storage.

Abstract Although several fundamental physico‐chemical aspects of nickel sulfides have been studied in detail, particularly for millerite (nickel(II) monosulfide), the most common nickel sulfide mineral, no satisfactory investigation of optical vibrational modes has been reported previously. In this paper, we provide a definitive assignment of the optical phonons in millerite, investigated by polarized Raman spectroscopy on an oriented single crystal. The impact of the power of the incident laser beam on the spectra has also been investigated, revealing evidence for degradation in the quality of the spectra at sufficiently high laser power. Resveratrol protects podocytes against apoptosis via stimulation of autophagy in a mouse model of diabetic nephropathy

Abstract Podocyte apoptosis coincides with albuminuria onset and precedes podocytopenia in diabetic nephropathy. However, there is a lack of effective therapeutic drugs to protect podocytes from apoptosis. Here, we demonstrated that resveratrol relieved a series of indicators of diabetic nephropathy and attenuated apoptosis of podocytes in db/db diabetic model mice. In addition, resveratrol induced autophagy in both db/db mice and human podocytes. Furthermore, inhibition of autophagy by 3-methyladenine (3-MA) and autophagy gene 5 (Atg5) short hairpin RNA (shRNA) reversed the protective effects of resveratrol on podocytes. Finally, we found that resveratrol might regulate autophagy and apoptosis in db/db mice and podocytes through the suppression of microRNA-383-5p (miR-383-5p). Together, our results indicate that resveratrol effectively attenuates high glucose-induced apoptosis via the activation of autophagy in db/db mice and podocytes, which involves miR-383-5p. Thus, this study reveals a new possible strategy to treat diabetic nephropathy.
