Gas-solid reaction based over one-micrometer thick stable perovskite films for efficient solar cells and modules

Abstract Besides high efficiency, the stability and reproducibility of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are also key for their commercialization. Herein, we report a simple perovskite formation method to fabricate perovskite films with thickness over 1 μm in ambient condition on the basis of the fast gas−solid reaction of chlorine-incorporated hydrogen lead triiodide and methylamine gas. The resultant thick and smooth chlorine-incorporated perovskite films exhibit full coverage, improved crystallinity, low surface roughness and low thickness variation. The resultant PSCs achieve an average power conversion efficiency of 19.1 ± 0.4% with good reproducibility. Meanwhile, this method enables an active area efficiency of 15.3% for 5 cm × 5 cm solar modules. The un-encapsulated PSCs exhibit an excellent T 80 lifetime exceeding 1600 h under continuous operation conditions in dry nitrogen environment.

Buried Interface Engineering for Scalable Processing of High‐Performance Inverted Perovskite Solar Modules

Abstract Achieving high efficiency over large areas remains a significant bottleneck in commercializing perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Recent advancements in passivation technology, especially using self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) to address buried interface defects, have been instrumental in boosting the efficiency of PSCs. However, SAMs' compactness, uniformity, and wettability are crucial factors influencing the quality of perovskite films. This study presents a buried interface layer based on NiO x /mesoporous Al 2 O 3 sponge as a carrier for SAM solution adsorption, combined with a dip coating process, successfully developing a large‐area preparation technology for SAM layers. The results indicate that the compact SAM layer deposited by this approach effectively passivates buried interface defects on a large scale, while the enhanced wettability of the Al 2 O 3 layer aids in eliminating interfacial voids. The modified PSCs with an active area of 0.09 cm 2 achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.46%. The device attains a champion PCE of 22.66%, marking one of the highest efficiencies reported for p‐i‐n PSMs prepared via large‐area coating in mini‐modules (10–200 cm 2 ) under air ambient conditions. Moreover, encapsulated devices retain 93.8% of their initial PCE after 1000 h of continuous operation under one‐sun equivalent intensity at 65 °C in an air environment.

Carbon-Based Electrode Engineering Boosts the Efficiency of All Low-Temperature-Processed Perovskite Solar Cells

Carbon electrode-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with low-cost and long-term stability have been recognized as a competitive candidate toward future practical applications. However, energy level mismatch and ineffective hole extraction at the carbon electrode/perovskite interface limit device performance. Herein, we develop a low-cost carbon-based electrode that utilizes a cheap small-molecule semiconductor copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as both the interface modifier and dopant. The resultant planar PSC yields a power conversion efficiency of 14.8%, ∼30% higher than that based on the bare carbon electrode. This is due to higher work function and better hole extraction properties of the CuPc-modified carbon electrodes. The simple modification process of the carbon electrode has potential applications for large-scale fabrication. We further applied such electrodes in large-area solar modules and flexible solar cells, demonstrating their capability of upscaling and flexibility.
