Migration and Transformation of Nitrogen in Clay-Rich Soil Under Shallow Groundwater Depth: In Situ Experiment and Numerical Simulation

Excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer in agricultural activities can easily induce nitrogen pollution in groundwater, which may deteriorate groundwater quality. Generally, nitrogen fertilizer passes through the unsaturated zone to groundwater. Therefore, it is of great significance to investigate the migration and transformation of nitrogen pollutants in unsaturated zones for the prevention and control of groundwater nitrogen pollution. Clay-rich soil is often considered a barrier layer to prevent pollutant leakage because of its lower relative permeability, while its prevention capacity is seldom reported under shallow groundwater table conditions. Motivated by this, an in situ experiment and numerical simulation were conducted to investigate the migration and transformation of nitrogen fertilizer in a clay-unsaturated zone with a shallow groundwater table. Systematic measurements and numerical simulation results revealed that nitrogen can pollute groundwater via the infiltration through clay-rich soil in the in situ experiment site. This finding clarified that the difference in hydraulic head under the shallow groundwater table, rather than soil permeability, is the dominant factor in controlling the downward migration of nitrogen pollutants in the clay-unsaturated zone. More importantly, the nitrogen migration is convection dominant during precipitation in this experiment, indicating nitrogen polluted groundwater much faster in humid climate areas. These findings suggest that nitrogen contaminates groundwater easily under shallow groundwater tables in humid climate areas, even with clay-rich soil texture.

Contribution of Recycled Moisture to Precipitation: A Modified D‐Excess‐Based Model

Abstract Defining moisture sources and evolution of precipitation is of significance for further exploration of complex hydro‐climatic interactions, especially under global warming with alternations of evapotranspiration capacity and precipitation moisture source structure. As a sensitive indicator, d‐excess has been widely used to quantify the proportion of recycled vapor to precipitation ( f re ). However, existing d‐excess‐based models ignore to take transpiration vapor into account and the calculated f re tends to be lower than the true value, thus underestimating the importance of recycled vapor in precipitation. Herein, the existing model was modified with transpiration vapor considered and applied in Guyuan, China located in a monsoon marginal zone with complex precipitation moisture sources. After modification, the estimated annual average f re was increased from 7.5% to 14.8%, well calibrating the existing model. This study highlights the contribution of transpiration vapor to precipitation and provides more information on the formation and evolution of precipitation to better serve future hydro‐climatic research.

The Control of Groundwater Flow Systems and Geochemical Processes on Groundwater Chemistry: A Case Study in Wushenzhao Basin, NW China

The lowest reaches of a large-scale basin could be the discharge areas of local, intermediate and regional groundwater flow systems with significantly distinct travel distances and travel times. This study aims to delineate the groundwater chemical characteristics and the mechanism controlling the chemical evolution in the lowest reaches of the Wushenzhao Cretaceous basin, NW China. A total of 38 groundwater samples were collected and were chemically classified into five distinct water types by means of a Piper Plot. According to the hydrogeological setting and groundwater age, the spatial distribution of these water types is found to be associated with hierarchically nested groundwater flow systems (local and regional system): Types 1, 2, 3 and 4 belong to the local groundwater flow system, while type 5 belongs to the regional flow system. Graphical plots, stable isotopes and geochemical modeling techniques were used to interpret the observed compositions. The results show the dominance of carbonate and gypsum dissolution in type 1 waters; ion exchange in types 2, 3 and 4; and evaporite dissolution in type 5. In addition, human activities in the form of extensive irrigation also affect the chemical compositions of type 1 water. These findings are important for the sustainable management of groundwater resources in the study area.

Soil profile evolution following land‐use change: implications for groundwater quantity and quality

Abstract Soil and vadose zone profiles are used as an archive of changes in groundwater recharge and water quality following changes in land use in an area of the Loess Plateau of China. A typical rain‐fed loess‐terrace agriculture region in Hequan, Guyuan, is taken as an example, and multiple tracers (chloride mass balance, stable isotopes, tritium and water chemistry) are used to examine groundwater recharge mechanisms and to evaluate soil water chloride as an archive for recharge rate and water quality. Results show that groundwater recharge beneath natural uncultivated grassland, used as a baseline, is about 94–100 mm year −1 and that the time it takes for annual precipitation to reach water table through the thick unsaturated zone is from decades to hundreds of years (tritium free). This recharge rate is 2–3 orders of magnitude more than in the other semiarid areas with similar annual rainfall but with deep‐rooted vegetation and relatively high temperature. Most of the water that eventually becomes recharge originally infiltrated in the summer months. The conversion from native grassland to winter wheat has reduced groundwater recharge by 42–50% (50–55 mm year −1 for recharge), and the conversion from winter wheat to alfalfa resulted in a significant chloride accumulation in the upper soil zone, which terminated deep drainage. The paper also evaluates the time lag between potential recharge and actual recharge to aquifer and between increase in solute concentration in soil moisture and that in the aquifer following land‐use change due to the deep unsaturated zone. Origin of sulphate in the unsaturated zone and groundwater of a loess aquifer

Abstract The use of the sulphate mass balance (SMB) between precipitation and soil water as a supplementary method to estimate the diffuse recharge rate assumes that the sulphate in soil water originated entirely from atmospheric deposition; however, the origin of sulphate in soil and groundwater is often unclear, especially in loess aquifers. This study analysed the sulphur (δ 34 S‐SO 4 ) and oxygen (δ 18 O‐SO 4 ) isotopes of sulphate in precipitation, water‐extractable soil water, and shallow groundwater samples and used these data along with hydrochemical data to determine the sources of sulphate in the thick unsaturated zone and groundwater of a loess aquifer. The results suggest that sulphate in groundwater mainly originated from old precipitation. When precipitation percolates through the unsaturated zone to recharge groundwater, sulphates were rarely dissolved due to the formation of CaCO 3 film on the surface of sulphate minerals. The water‐extractable sulphate in the deep unsaturated zone (>10 m) was mainly derived from the dissolution of evaporite minerals and there was no oxidation of sulphide minerals during the extraction of soil water by elutriating soil samples with deionized water. The water‐extractable concentration of SO 4 was not representative of the actual SO 4 concentration in mobile soil water. Therefore, the recharge rate cannot be estimated by the SMB method using the water‐extractable concentration of SO 4 in the loess areas. This study is important for identifying sulphate sources and clarifying the proper method for estimating the recharge rate in loess aquifers.

Groundwater Recharge Environments and Hydrogeochemical Evolution in Beijing, China: Multi-Tracer Approach

The groundwater recharge environments and hydrogeochemical characteristics in Beijing were investigated using a combination of chemical indicators, stable isotopes, and radiocarbon dating. There are two distinct zones for those groundwaters: modern water (1000 a) are depleted, which implies that the palaeowaters were recharged in relatively cold climate. The TDS for all groundwater samples range from 312 to 914 mg/L. Groundwaters are supersaturated with respect to calcite and the δ13C value is stable (around -13‰), which suggests dissolution of calcite is limited. Dissolution of halite, sulfate and carbonate and exchange of cations are main processes of water chemistry. The results have important implications for groundwater management in Beijing, where a certain proportion of the unrenewable water has been mined.
