Mid‐ordovician structures in South‐Western Snowdonia

Abstract Tectonic and stratigraphical relationships of the Snowdon Volcanic Series are described from a critical locality near Beddgelert. Here a Caradocian pre‐cleavage fault of Caledonoid trend is identified and it is suggested that this structure was important in determining the disposition of the largely subaerial Caradocian volcanic rocks. Regional considerations suggest that while basic Ordovician volcanic rocks of Wales are largely pillow lavas and therefore submarine, the acid volcanic rocks are mainly ignimbrites and therefore subaerial. It is suggested that such subaerial vulcanicity owes its origin to the build up of magma blisters.

THE TECTONICS OF THE SCHICHALLION COMPLEX

The results of the present investigation of the Schichallion complex can be summarized as follows :– (i) The succession established by Bailey & McCallien (1937) is confirmed. (ii) The imprints of four separate movements, F 1 to F 4 , have been found in the area. (iii) F 1 and F 2 are somewhat closely connected and are responsible for the two major systems of folding, which have produced the “Schichallion swing”. (iv) No indications of “twisting” or “torsion” have been found.

Pre-Mesozoic evolution of Avalon terranes of southern New England

With the recognition of the Hope Valley shear zone (HVSZ) as a terrane boundary, the Esmond-Dedham terrane (EDT) was subdivided, and the western division was named the Hope Valley terrane (HVT). The oldest rocks of the HVT consist of schist, gneiss and quartzite (Plainfield Formation), and metavolcanic and metaplutonic gneisses and amphibolites (Waterford Group), some of the latter yielding a radiometric age of 620 Ma. Members of the Sterling Plutonic Suite, consisting of granite gneiss and alaskite gneiss, intrude these older units. Cross-folds

Abstract Many recent investigators report the presence of “ cross-folds ” in mountain chains. The common right angle relations between such folds and the main trends suggest that they are genetically allied. Following the original suggestion of Argand, it is proposed that the superficial cross-folds are due to basement control (passive segmentation), whereas those in the deeper parts of geosynclines have been brought into being by the limitations of space (active segmentation).

The evolution of quartz fabrics in the metamorphic rocks of central Perthshire

Structural and metamorphic studies in the Moinian and Dalradian rocks between Pitlochry and Kinloch Rannoch (Perthshire) have led to an investigation of the behaviour of quartz in response to regional metamorphism. The tectonic structures of the area indicate that the rocks have been subjected to three episodes of folding. Textural analysis by means of thin sections has led to the establishment of a sequence of mineral transformations which can be related to the tectonism which affected the rocks of the area. Investigations with the Universal Stage—in part involving the A.V.A. method—of specimens of diverse lithological types have indicated the relationships between the orientated quartz fabrics and megascopic structures encountered in the field. Various types of quartz girdles and maxima have been identified. Changes resulting from the working of metals described by metallurgists are suggested to have a parallelism in the changes observed in rock fabrics during regional metamorphism, and this has led the authors to propose a new theory for the orientation of quartz in tectonites.

Paleoenvironmental and tectonic controls of sedimentation in coal-forming basins of southeastern New England

An erosional hiatus over almost the entire area between Pennsylvania and western New Brunswick suggests that the region was mountainous from the Middle Devonian Acadian orogeny through Pennsylvanian time. Of seven basins or deposits of southeast-era New England, the ages of three (Narragansett, Norfolk, and Worcester) are florally determined as Westphalian B (Middle Pennsylvanian) to Stephanian B or C (Late Pennsylvanian); three lack flora but are of inferred Carboniferous age (North Scituate, Woonsocket, and Pin Hill), and one is of possibly Carboniferous age (Sturbridge). The first three are characterized by flora suggesting a tropical or subtropical climate and by alluvial fan facies deposited in an intermontane basin. Four of these basins or deposits lie in the Avalon Terrane, three just west of the Nashoba Terrane, but none has been recognized in the intermediate Nashoba Terrane. These basin deposits can be correlated with similar deposits in Atlantic Canada.
