Comparative Study on Thermodynamic and Geochemical Characteristics between Cemented and Clotted Parts of Thrombolite

Carbonate rocks are widely distributed in nature and are one of the main reservoir rocks for oil and gas. Microbes play an important role in the formation of carbonate rocks. Compared with the cemented part with fewer microorganisms (abiotic minerals), the nucleation and growth of the clotted part with more microorganisms (biotic minerals) are affected by the metabolic activities of microorganisms, so it has a unique morphology and crystal structure. However, there are still some confusing questions such as ones regarding the unique thermal decomposition characteristics and geochemical characteristics, which have rarely been studied. Here, X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the mineral composition of the cemented and clotted part in the same thrombolite. Then, thermal analysis and stable isotope geochemistry were used to explore the thermal stability and stable carbon isotope. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) show that the mineral components of the cemented and clotted part in the thrombolite are calcites, but their crystallinity is different. The crystallinity of the clotted part in the thrombolite is higher than that of the cemented part. Thermal analysis results show that the activation energy and the thermal stability of the clotted part in the thrombolite are relatively higher. In addition, the stable carbon isotope results show that, compared with the chemical precipitated calcite in the cemented part, the microorganisms in the clotted part absorb more 12C through photosynthesis, which results in more 13C in the clotted part, and the carbon isotope δ13C value is higher. This study helps to distinguish the crystallographic, thermodynamic and geochemical characteristics of cemented and clotted parts in thrombolite, and may be helpful to deepen our understanding of abiotic and biotic minerals.

Hydrogeochemistry of Water in Coal Measures during Grouting Treatment of Taoyuan Mine, China

Abstract Permian coal measure sandstone fissure water (referred to as “coal measure water,” that is, water in coal measures) is one of the important water sources for industrial and agricultural activities in mining areas. However, the regional high‐pressure grouting, one of the most widely used floor control methods, may affect the coal measure water which is connected with limestone aquifer. This study used Taoyuan mine, a typical coal mine in Huaibei coalfield, as the research area to study the influencing mechanism of a grouting treatment on the hydrogeochemical evolution of coal measure water. The hydrogeochemical characteristics and water‐rock interaction mechanism of the coal measure water before and during the treatment were evaluated using a Piper trigram, ion combination ratio, and hydrogen‐oxygen stable isotope. The anions and cations in the coal measure water before and during the treatment had the same trends at SO 4 2− > HCO 3 − > Cl − and Na + > Ca 2+ > Mg 2+ , respectively. Hydrochemical types of coal measure water before treatment were mainly SO 4 ·Cl‐Ca·Mg, SO 4 ·Cl‐Na, and HCO 3 ‐Na, and during treatment they were mainly SO 4 ·Cl‐Na and HCO 3 ‐Na. The formation of chemical components of coal measure water before treatment was mainly caused by carbonate dissolution, sulfate dissolution, and pyrite oxidation. During the treatment, sulfate dissolution and pyrite oxidation were the main geochemical processes, and ion exchange was enhanced. Atmospheric precipitation was the source of all water samples, and all showed an obvious 18 O drift.

Hydrochemical and Isotope (18O, 2H and 3H) Characteristics of Karst Water in Central Shandong Province: A Case Study of the Pingyi-Feixian Region

Karst water serves as an important water supply source in northern China. Hydrochemical and isotope (18O, 2H, and 3H) characteristics are invaluable tools to identify water–rock interaction activities in karst water systems. In this study, the investigation of hydrogeological conditions, hydrogeochemistry, and hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of karst water revealed: (1) HCO3-Ca-type water is widely distributed throughout the study area, while HCO3-Ca·Mg-type water appears in the direct recharge areas and the discharge areas; karst water of the HCO3−·Cl−, Cl−·HCO3−, and Cl− types is scattered in low-land areas; (2) karst water has high δ18O, which may be due to the dissolution and exchange of 18O from the surrounding carbonate rocks in the western discharge zone; and (3) the 3H concentration of karst water is strongly correlated with the content of major ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3−, SO42−, and Cl−) and it increases along the flow path. It was also revealed that the karst water in the discharge areas is mixed with lateral recharge (infiltration recharge from surface water).

Zircon U-Pb Age of the Paleoproterozoic Diabase from the Yinachang Iron-copper Deposit,Yunan Province,and its Geological Implication

There exists a large number of diabase rock bodies at the Yinachang iron-copper deposit in Wuding,central Yunnan Province,southwest China. So far,few research works have been carried out on the mafic rocks within this ore district,thus the age of the diabases remains poorly understood. In this paper,we report the zircon U-Pb age of the Haizi diabase obtained by LA-ICP-MS method,and the weighted mean 206Pb/238U age is 1728±4 Ma(MSWD=1.8,n=11). The age of the diabase in the Wuding area is consistent with the contemporary magmatism in the southwestern Yangtze Block,as well as the breakup of the Columbia supercontinent. Therefore,it is suggested that these diabases formed in response to the global breakup event of the Columbia supercontinent. Moreover,the age of the Haizi diabase is roughly comparable with metallogenetic epoch of the typical iron-copper deposit,implying the possible metallogenetic significance of Late Paleoproterozoic magmatism in the southwestern Yangtze Block. This large-scale magmatic event might have been the main sources of ore-forming materials,such as Cu and Fe. In addition,the Meidang Formation should be older than the diabase that intruded it. Therefore,we propose that the so called Meidang Formation,which may be considered as the more ancient basement strata existed before continental extension of the Kunyang rift,should be included in Paleoproterozoic Tangdan Group.

Age of the Yongxin Au deposit in the Lesser Xing'an Range: Implications for an Early Cretaceous geodynamic setting for gold mineralization in NE China

The newly discovered Yongxin Au deposit in the Lesser Xing'an Range of north‐eastern Heilongjiang Province, NE China, has a resource of ~20 t with a grade of 4.1 g/t Au. The deposit is hosted by Carboniferous syenogranite and mylonite, and Cretaceous diorite porphyry and granite porphyry. The syenogranite has a LA‐ICP‐MS 206 Pb/ 238 U zircon age of 316 ± 2 Ma, and both the granite porphyry and diorite porphyry yield an age of 119 ± 1 Ma. The Rb–Sr isochron age of Au‐bearing pyrite from hydrothermal breccia‐type ore is 107 ± 4 Ma, and this is interpreted as the mineralization age of the Yongxin deposit. In combination with published geochronological data, we argue that epithermal Au mineralization in NE China formed during the period ca. 124 to 107 Ma and was produced during rollback of Palaeo‐Pacific oceanic slab. The Cretaceous epithermal Au deposits are distributed in the Erguna Massif, Lesser Xing'an Range, Zhangguangcai Range, and Jiamusi and Nadanhada terranes. In combination with the coeval porphyry Mo deposits present in these areas, we propose that the Erguna Massif, Lesser Xing'an Range, north‐eastern Great Xing'an Range, and eastern Jiamusi and Nadanhada terranes, where only epithermal gold deposits were discovered up to date, might be prospective for concealed porphyry Cu or Mo deposits.

Study on the Influence of Mining Activities on the Quality of Deep Karst Groundwater Based on Multivariate Statistical Analysis and Hydrochemical Analysis

Long-term mining activities have changed the hydrogeochemical evolution process of groundwater and threatened the safe use of groundwater. By using the methods of hydrochemistry and multivariate statistical analysis, this study determined the hydrogeochemical evolution mechanism affecting the quality of karst groundwater by analyzing the conventional hydrochemistry data of the karst groundwater of the Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation in Hengyuan Coal Mine in the recent 12 years. The results show that, under the disturbance of mining, the quality of karst groundwater in Taiyuan Formation is poor, mainly because the contents of Na++K+ and SO42− are too high to allow usage as drinking water. The reason for the high content of SO42− in karst groundwater lies in the dissolution of gypsum and the oxidation of pyrite, and the high content of Na++K+ lies in the cation exchange. Influenced by the stratum grouting, the circulation of karst groundwater is improved, the cation exchange is weakened, and the desulfurization is enhanced. In the future, it is predicted that the hydrochemical type of karst groundwater in Taiyuan Formation in the study area will evolve from SO4-Ca·Mg type to HCO3-Ca Mg type.

Early Cretaceous gold mineralization in the Lesser Xing’an Range of NE China: the Yongxin example

The northern Lesser Xing’an Range in NE China hosts many gold deposits. However, genesis and tectonic background for the mineralization remain unclear. The newly discovered Yongxin gold deposit in this region provides a good example for understanding the related issues. Two economic orebodies have been recognized at Yongxin and they are mainly hosted in the hydrothermal breccias. Zircon U–Pb ages of granite porphyry and diorite porphyry are 119.3 ± 0.7 Ma and 119.9 ± 0.6 Ma, respectively. These data provide constraints to the upper limit of ore-forming age. The δ34S values of pyrite from orebodies range from 2.3‰ to 5.1‰. The 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios of the pyrite are of 18.126–18.255, 15.492–15.537 and 37.880–38.019, respectively. The δ18OH2O and δD values of ore-forming fluids range from −12.5‰ to 1.8‰ and from −124.8‰ to −102.1‰, respectively. The REE compositions of gold-bearing pyrite are similar to those of the volcanic rocks of the Longjiang formation, diorite porphyry and granite porphyry. The combined geological, geochronological and geochemical characteristics of the Yongxin gold deposit indicate that the ore-forming materials were likely sourced from the volcanic rocks of the Longjiang formation, diorite porphyry and granite porphyry, whereas the ore-forming fluids are dominated by meteoric water. The Yongxin gold deposit could be a product of the Early Cretaceous large-scale gold mineralization in northeast China which occurred in an extensional tectonic setting and were related to the rollback of the subducted Paleo-Pacific Oceanic Plate beneath the continental margin of northeast China.
