Upper Magdalena Valley basin in Colombia has new play potential

During third quarter 1993 Ecopetrol set in action a strategy to increase exploration investment in Colombia resulting in the first licensing round by competitive tender, which opened for 90 days on April 18, 1994. The Upper Magdalena Valley basin (UMVB), one of three areas set aside for licensing, lies at the head of the Magdalena River between 2--5[degree] N. Lat. The acreage offered consists of 4,900 sq km, some 23% of the total basin area. Historical attention has focused on the Cretaceous Caballos and Monserrate sandstones, but new play potential exists for reservoirs in laterally equivalent facies and at other stratigraphic levels. The paper discusses previous exploration activities, regional geology, geologic structures, petroleum source rocks, the principal reservoirs, sealing mechanisms, geologic traps, play types, trap charge and integrity, and technical merit of the Upper Magdalena Valley basin.

New geophysical evidence for extensional tectonics on the divergent margin offshore Namibia

Abstract Over 14 000 km of high-resolution multifold seismic data together with gravity and magnetic data provide the opportunity to examine the mechanism and history of rifting on the Namibian continental margin. The region is a completely developed divergent margin containing a pre-rift megasequence of interior cratonic sag origin; two rift basin megasequences dominated by siliclastic deposition; a transitional megasequence and thermal sag megasequences dominated by overlapping progradational wedges. In the Orange Basin acid to intermediate volcanic rocks erupted at the end of the pre-rift phase in Mid- to Late Jurassic times and this was followed by regional uplift. Basaltic volcanic activity was associated with the synrift phases and widespread volcanic rocks developed during the second synrift event, related to the Tristan da Cunha-Walvis Ridge mantle plume. Regional seismic mapping indicates that rifting migrated from south to north with time. The geophysical data enable the recognition of major structural elements which include the Eastern Graben Province, the Medial Hinge Line, the Central Half Graben and the Marginal Ridge. The geometry of the rift basin is asymmetric and can be explained by a simple shear mechanism. South of Walvis Ridge extension was accommodated by movement along a major normal fault which is listric at depth. The basin depocentre represented by the Central Half Graben lies landward of this major fault and is offset from the area of thinnest crust as interpreted from the gravity data.

Regional aeromagnetic anomalies in Ellsworth Land: Crustal structure and Mesozoic microplate boundaries within West Antarctica

The structural relationship between West Antarctic crustal blocks has remained uncertain due to a lack of information concerning sub‐ice crustal structure. A regional aeromagnetic reconnaissance of Ellsworth Land between 72 and 80°S and 65 and 100°W, completed as part of an integrated geophysical and geological investigation, provides the opportunity to study the ice‐covered area where several continental crustal blocks meet: Antarctic Peninsula, Thurston Island, Ellsworth‐Whitmore mountains and Haag Nunataks. The anomaly map is dominated by two major positive magnetic areas. Firstly, the Pacific Margin Anomaly (PMA) continues as a coastline‐parallel feature 100 km wide through Antarctic Peninsula and Thurston Island. The broad curvilinear anomaly with magnetic maxima of 200–600 nT is related to a mafic batholith and related intrusions and structures of the Pacific margin, mostly of Mesozoic age. Second, a zone of high intensity anomalies (200–1000 nT) of variable wavelengths (20–150 km) define an extensive area of highly magnetic Precambrian basement which is exposed at Haag Nunataks but is for the most part buried beneath ice and non‐magnetic cover. The geophysical data suggest that some of the crustal blocks have common structural features, their boundaries are more complex than originally thought and aeromagnetic provinces do not entirely correspond to the topographically defined boundaries of the crustal blocks. The Antarctic Peninsula and Thurston Island blocks are thought to have remained juxtaposed since the emplacement of the intrusive body related to the PMA. The Haag Nunataks Precambrian basement probably extends beneath the south and west margins of the Weddell Sea embayment and beneath the Ellsworth Mountains. The origin of long wavelength lineations beneath the Weddell Sea embayment is speculative. If they are related to Haag Nunataks Precambrian basement then the data offer insight into the trend of the Palaeozoic Ellsworth Mountain fold belt and support rotation models. Alternatively, if the anomalies are imaging break‐up related rifting trends, the lineations may provide extension and movement directions.

Interpretation of aeromagnetic data from the Ellsworth Mountains-Thiel Mountains ridge, West Antarctica

Over 12000 km of new aeromagnetic data, gathered during periods free from auroral disturbances, are presented for an area of 290 000 km 2 in West Antarctica, including the majority of the Ellsworth-Whitmore Mountain crustal block. Selection of an appropriate line spacing (20 km) and rigorous diurnal control allowed interpretation of isolated magnetic anomalies by two-dimensional modellìng. Anomalies of 50–500 nT amplitude extend for over 100 km, predominantly with an east-west orientation. They attain their greatest amplitudes over scattered exposures of Middle Jurassic granite, but the measured magnetizations of these rocks ( J <0.1 Am −1 ) are insufficient to match the observed anomalies. It was necessary during modelling to invoke deeper, magnetite-rich, probably mafic plutons ( J >0.5 Am −1 ) beneath the granites. The intrusions probably form part of a widespread bimodal igneous suite created during early stages of continental fragmentation.

The tectonographic development of Patagonia and its relevance to hydrocarbon exploration

Patagonia accreted successively from the southwest onto the southern margin of the Proterozoic Plata Craton and Brazilian Guapore Shield between the Late Proterozoic and Early Devonian. The thrust-like stacking of terranes onto the southern termination of the Pelotas Terrane is considered to have developed a pervasive northwest to north-trending fabric. During the Permo-Triassic the northwest to north-trending fabric of the Patagonian Plate was re-activated by dextral strike-slip movement causing extension. The deformation was caused by oblique subduction and accretion of the madre Dos Dios to Pichidangui Terranes along its western margin. To the northeast the more competent shield underwent compression (Ventania-Gond-wanide Folding) and extension occurred parallel to the axis of the embryo South Atlantic, where a shallow sea transgressed. Ridge on its western side, now preserved on the facing shelf margins of Argentina and Namibia. In the Late Triassic-Lower Jurassic, the Malvinas and Microplate was situated south of the Transkei (South Africa) and an intracratonic basin separated it from two sutures formed at the margin of the Argentine Shelf and along the axis of the West Malvinas Basin. Subduction/arc activity on the west flank of this intracratonic basin, in association with trench pull is believed to have initiated Late Triassic-Earlymore » Jurassic strike slip extension and volcanicity in Patagonia. This exploited the pervasive northwest and north-trending Paleozoic fabric. By the Mid-Jurassic the Malvinas Microplate had docked with the eastern margin of the Patagonian Shelf and was undergoing clockwise rotation between the Malvinas-Agulhas and Burwood Bank-Scotia Ridge dextral strike-slip systems. Rifting had now progressed southwestwards to the Pacific and north eastwards to the Colorado and Outeniqua Basins.« less

Seismic sequence stratigraphy and tectonics offshore Namibia

Abstract High quality seismic data recently acquired offshore Namibia have revealed the complex interplay between sedimentation and rifting that accompanied the breakup of Gondwanaland. Seismic sequence analysis has demonstrated a complex series of superimposed phases of rifting. Jurassic early-rift sediments were deposited in a Basin & Range setting with marine embayments. Mid- to Late Jurassic extension probably culminated in acidic to intermediate volcanicity. Subsequently, late-rift fill sedimentary accumulations were terminated locally by a major period of plateau-forming effusive activity. This was coincident with the start of Early Cretaceous spreading in the South Atlantic. Shelf, slope and basinal facies are clearly defined in the post-rift succession. Although virtually undrilled, the area is considered to have very considerable petroleum potential. Seismic stratigraphy will continue to play a vital role in defining the critical juxtapositions of source rock, reservoir and seal.
