OneGeology-Europe: architecture, portal and web services to provide a European geological map

OneGeology-Europe is a large ambitious project to make geological spatial data further known and accessible. The OneGeology-Europe project develops an integrated system of data to create and make accessible for the first time through the internet the geological map of the whole of Europe. The architecture implemented by the project is web services oriented, based on the OGC standards: the geological map is not a centralized database but is composed by several web services, each of them hosted by a European country involved in the project.

GeoSciML: Enabling the Exchange of Geological Map Data

The CGI data model working group have established an initial geology data model and XML based exchange language to accommodate geological map data, referred to as GeoSciML. The language is based on prior work carried out at North American, European and Australian geological survey and research organisations. Unified Modelling Language (UML) has been used as a design aid for capturing the geological concepts and their properties. The UML model has then been converted to the GML-conformant GeoSciML.The design of GeoSCiML meets the short-term goal of accommodating the geoscience information presented on geological maps, as well as being fully extensible to include the full range of geological concepts covered by the geosciences. To demonstrate the ability of GeoSciML to deliver data via web feature services, a small subset has been selected as a testbed. This testbed will deliver lithostratigraphic units, boreholes, faults, contacts and compound materials from different national geological surveys.

Digital geoscience spatial model project final report

When developing a 3-D view of the subsurface, a geologist has to collect, validate and integrate a wide range of data. The resulting understanding of the concealed geology can then be brought together as a 3D model. All of this data and understanding should be accessible as the model is viewed, rather like a digital 3D geological map with descriptions, keys and links to the observational data. The term digital geoscience spatial model (DGSM) was coined by Vic Loudon for this concept, which he describes in the first section of this report. The DGSM has seen the concept turned into a working system. In this report we summarise the objectives and achievements of the DGSM and describe the strands that have been woven together to bring the programme to completion. Our intention here is to provide an outline of the system so that BGS collegues, other environmental scientists and our clients can use it to further the understanding of the complex Earth on which we depend. In order to put the idea into practice, the BGS carried out a scoping study and won funding from the NERC to carry out a five-year project which started in 2000. We designed the programme to have two main parts: the 'framework' of information technology developments and the 'population projects' where the framework could be tested.

IUGS Science Excellence Award 2012 for Management and Application of Geoscience Information

This prize (awarded every four years) recognises a significant individual contribution to the digital management/application of geoscience information. Citation: John LAXTON of the British Geological Survey has been awarded the IUGS Science Excellence Award 2012 on Management and Application of Geoscience Information. With this award the international geological community represented by the IUGS acknowledges Dr. LAXTON's work to advance the application of digital techniques to geology, for which the development of a geoscience interchange language (GeoSciML), and the creation of a harmonized metadatabase of geoscience, constitute major contributions.

Applied geological mapping in the Wrexham area computing techniques

The Wrexham area applied geological mapping project (Contract No. PECD/7/1/290) was commissioned in 1988 by the Department of the Environment on behalf of the Welsh Office, and carried out by the British Geological Survey. The objectives were to provide cover of modern geological maps for the Wrexham area and to present applied thematic information on geological conditions as they relate to planning and development. The main results of the study are given in Hains (1991). The present report gives an account, as required in the contract schedule, of the techniques used for the production of the computer database and the preparation therefrom of applied maps. Conclusions are recorded on the suitability of the systems for application in further applied mapping studies.
