Characteristics and vertical zonation of large‐scale granitic reservoirs, a case study from Penglai oil field in the Bohai Bay Basin, North China

Primary pores are undeveloped in the granite, but multiple types of reservoir spaces can form during the processes of weathering and tectonic movement. Taking Penglai (PL) oil field as an example, the vertical zonal characteristic of the buried granite is defined and the relationship between different zones and reservoir is discussed. The granite can be divided into weathered zone (WZ) and bedrock zone (BZ) vertically according to weathered or not, and the WZ can be divided into weathered clay zone (WCZ), weathered glutenite zone (WGZ), and weathered fracture zone (WFZ) further. The lithology, mineral composition, and weathering indices (geochemistry) can distinguish different zones. Both WZ and BZ can form good reservoirs, among them the reservoir of WGZ is dominated by pores, while that of WFZ and the BZ are mainly composed of fractures, and they constitute the high‐quality reservoir together. There is an obvious positive correlation between the thickness of fracture zone in BZ and the thickness of WZ, and both WZ and BZ are influenced by tectonic movement. Moreover, WZ superimposed with meteoric water dissolution makes it the best reservoir in the granitic buried hill, and the development of fractures in BZ extends the thickness of reservoir greatly.

Plasma levels of growth differentiation factor-15 are associated with myocardial injury in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting

Abstract Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) has recently emerged as a risk predictor in patients with cardiovascular diseases. We therefore aimed to investigate the role of GDF-15 in the occurrence of cardiac injury during off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB). 55 consecutive patients with coronary artery diseases were recruited in this prospective, observational study. All patients were operated for OPCAB surgery. Serial blood samples were collected preoperatively, 12 hours and 36 hours after surgery. GDF-15, together with C-reactive protein, cardiac troponin I, creatine kinase MB and N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide levels in plasma were measured at each time-point. GDF-15 levels increased significantly at 12 hours after surgery, attaining nearly 2.5 times the baseline levels (p < 0.001). Postoperative GDF-15 levels correlated positively with cTnI (p = 0.003) and EuroSCORE II (p = 0.013). According to the ROC curves, postoperative plasma GDF-15 was found to be the best biomarker to predict perioperative cardiac injury, compared with cTnI, CK-MB and EuroSCORE II. Circulating GDF-15 is a promising novel biomarker for identifying perioperative myocardial injury in patients undergoing OPCAB.

Simulation of Carbon Isotope Excursion Events at the Permian-Triassic Boundary Based on GEOCARB

Abstract The biggest Phanerozoic mass extinctionoccurred at the Permian-Triassic boundary and resulted in the loss of about 95% or more of all marine species. For quite some time, many kinds of abnormal environmental events were adopted to explain the abnormal reduction of carbon isotope at the Permian-Triassic boundary, however there still has not been a unified opinion. In this paper, based on the carbon cycle balance model of the earth under a long-period scale, the contributions of possible cataclysm events at the Permian-Triassic boundary to the carbon isotope records in carbonates were quantitatively simulated. The results proved that a single event, such as volcanism, terrestrial ecosystem collapse or another factor, was not strong enough to lead to the negative bias of carbon isotope at the Permian-Triassic boundary. Even though the release of methane hydrate can result in a comparably large negative excursion of inorganic carbon, this explanation becomes unsuitable when both the shifting Permian-Triassic boundary and the fluctuation record of other inorganic carbon isotopes in the early Triassic as a whole are considered. Therefore, it is suggested that the dynamic equilibrium between inorganic carbon reserves and organic carbon reserves was possibly disturbed by a superimposed effect of multiple events.

Sediment Dispersal Patterns and Sandstone Reservoirs in the Late Carboniferous Benxi Formation Linked to Differential Source-to-Sink and Tidal Reworking, Ordos Basin, China

The sedimentary record is important for the understanding of basinal geomorphology and evolution. Although the Pennsylvanian (late Carboniferous) Benxi Formation of the Ordos Basin is a highly explored sequence with thousands of boreholes, controversies persist about whether or not the depositional system had a southern provenance and how the sequence was developed. In this paper, the provenance, depositional environment and stratigraphic development of the Benxi Formation are investigated according to sedimentary structure analysis, paleo-tidal range calculation, sediment dispersal patterns, and trace and rare earth element geochemical data. The provenance analysis results show that most of the sediments were derived the north, from the relatively stable North China Cratonic Margin Orogenic Belt. In contrast, those that were derived from the south were sourced from the complex Qinling Orogenic Belt of arc-continent collision. The tidal-related sedimentary structures, co-existing with delta-related sedimentary structures, demonstrate that Benxi Formation was influenced by tides which were of mesotidal or to macrotidal range. These results, combined with sediment dispersal patterns described in detail by mapping large amounts of statistical drilling lithostratigraphic data, argue that the sandy sediment flux and macrotidal shelf induced the formation of a tidal-delta complex. Two carbonate interlayers were formed during pauses in input of exotic detritus. Benxi Formation source-to-sink paleogeography was reconstructed via multi sedimentary records. The results show that the differential source-to-sink systems and intensity of tidal reworking between the northern and southern regions constrained the sediment dispersal pattern of the late Carboniferous Benxi Formation and consequently influenced the quality of sandstone.

The Upper Yangtze Shallow-Water Carbonates Unveiling the Broadly Paibian Global Marine Euxinia Event: Implications for the Late Cambrian Spice

The SPICE (Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion) is a significant event in the Late Cambrian, recording global carbon cycle perturbations. Its driving mechanism is still controversial, but mainly believed to be related to an increase of organic carbon burial caused by ocean anoxia. The shallow-water platform carbonates of the Upper Cambrian Loushanguan Formation of Yankong section (Upper Yangtze) spans the event interval. Their primary geochemical proxy signatures (trace elements, carbon and strontium isotopes), have been investigated to better understand the driving mechanism of the SPICE event. The increase in values of redox proxies, such as V/(V+Ni) and Ce/Ce*, in the upper Loushanguan Formation is synchronous with the event and starts at the base of δ 13 C carb positive excursion, thus reflecting an expansion of anoxic seawater to shallow-water column, which is favorable to the burial and preservation of organic carbon. The increase of 87 Sr/ 86 Sr, Al, and ∑REE during the SPICE suggests an enhanced continental weathering that led to an increase in nutrient inputs into the ocean and consequently in organic carbon burial due to rise in primary productivity (P org ). The occurrence of PGMEE (Paibian global marine euxinia event), immediately before the enhancement of continental weathering, suggests that it was the onset-driving mechanism of the SPICE event and the increase in continental weathering might have preferentially consumed light 12 CO 2 and promoted primary productivity to further intensify carbon burial and play a superimposed effect on that of the SPICE event.

Hydrothermal Fluid Sources of the Fengjia Barite–fluorite Deposit in Southeast Sichuan, China: Evidence from Fluid Inclusions and Hydrogen and Oxygen Isotopes

Abstract The Fengjia barite–fluorite deposit in southeast Sichuan is a stratabound ore deposit which occurs mainly in Lower Ordovician carbonate rocks. Here we present results from fluid inclusion and oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies to determine the nature and origin of the hydrothermal fluids that generated the deposit. The temperature of the ore‐forming fluid shows a range of 86 to 302 °C. Our detailed microthermometric data show that the temperature during mineralization of the fluorite and barite in the early ore‐forming stage was higher than that during the formation of the calcite in the late ore‐forming stage. The salinity varied substantially from 0.18% to 21.19% NaCl eqv., whereas the density was around 1.00 g/cm 3 . The fluid composition was mainly H 2 O (>91.33%), followed by CO 2 , CH 4 and traces of C 2 H 6 , CO, Ar, and H 2 S. The dominant cation was Na + and the dominant anion Cl ‐ , followed by Ca 2+ , SO 4 2‐ , K + , and Mg 2+ , indicating a mid–low‐temperature, mid‐low‐salinity, low‐density NaCl–H 2 O system. Our results demonstrate that the temperature decreased during the ore‐forming process and the fluid system changed from a closed reducing environment to an open oxidizing environment. The hydrogen and oxygen isotope data demonstrate that the hydrothermal fluids in the study area had multiple sources, primarily formation water, as well as meteoric water and metamorphic water. Combined with the geological setting and mineralization features we infer that the stratabound barite–fluorite deposits originated from mid–low‐temperature hydrothermal fluids and formed vein filling in the fault zone.
