Cenozoic Volcanism of Southeast Asia

This paper presents an analysis of published and our own data on the geochemistry and isotopic sys- tematics of the Cenozoic volcanic complexes of southeastern China, Vietnam, and Thailand and the adjoining East China and South China seas. Three large periods of volcanic activity were distinguished: Early Tertiary, Miocene, and Pliocene-Quaternary. The first period was characterized by the development of potassic basalt (absarokites and cocites in Vietnam) and tholeiitic bimodal (basalts and trachytes in southeastern China) volca- nism, and the subsequent periods were dominated by intraplate-type tholeiitic and alkaline volcanism and minor occurrence of bimodal tholeiitic magmatism (basalts and rhyolites of the Okinawa Trough). The Ceno- zoic magmatic and geodynamic events were correlated over the region. It was shown that lateral and temporal variations in the compositions of the Miocene and Pliocene-Quaternary rocks reflect strong isotopic and geochemical heterogeneity of deep-seated magma sources.

Sources of eocene magmatism of Western Kamchatka (according to geochemical and isotope Sr-Nd-Pb characteristics of basites)

The isotope-geochemical characteristics of the Eocene-Oligocene magmatic rocks of Western Kamchatka were studied. It is shown that the igneous rocks of the Eocene (45-53 Ma) Kinkil complex of Western Kamchatka are characterized by geochemical signs of super-subduction volcanism. Their isotopic composition of Sr, Nd and Pb, low concentrations of HFSE and HREE relative to the composition of MORB, suggest the formation of primary melts from depleted or poorly enriched in isotopic composition of the mantle wedge sources in different contaminated quartz-feldspath sialic sediments. From the end of the Middle Eocene on the territory of Western Kamchatka, K-Na alkaline-basalt magmatism (46-31 million years), whose geochemical characteristics are similar to E-MORB, as well as ultrapotassic alkaline-basalt magmatism, which continued to develop to the early Miocene (35-17 million years). The geodynamic nature of Late Paleogene alkaline magmatism involves the implementation of processes of diffuse rifting.

Paleomagnetism of a Late Cretaceous island arc complex from South Sakhalin, East Asia: Convergent boundaries far away from the Asian continental margin?

The Hokkaido‐Sakhalin fold system stretches for ∼1500 km along the eastern coast of Asia and consists of several N‐S trending tectonic belts. Studies in South Sakhalin show that the northern part of the Tonino‐Aniva Peninsula (Ozersk unit) is a counterpart of the Tokoro belt on Hokkaido, Japan. In the eastern part of the Ozersk unit, 195 hand samples were sampled at 20 sites from Campanian‐Maastrichtian tuffaceous siltstones and sandstones of the Chayka Formation of island arc affinity. Stepwise thermal demagnetization isolates a postfolding low‐ to intermediate‐temperature component (B) of normal polarity. A high‐temperature component (A) is isolated from about half the samples. Because of strong overlap of unblocking temperature spectra of these two components in other samples, direct observations and remagnetization circles were combined for calculation of site‐mean directions. Component A is mostly of reversed polarity; a few samples of normal polarity are found at three sites. The presence of two polarities with approximately antipodal directions and the positive fold test imply a prefolding, and most probably primary, origin of component A. A formation‐mean inclination of 45.0°±6.4° calculated with the aid of inclination‐only statistics corresponds to a latitude of 26.6°±5.2°N. A similar inclination is derived from a late Cretaceous island arc complex from the Tokoro belt on Hokkaido. Since both mean inclinations are ∼30° lower than the coeval Eurasian reference value, a large‐scale northward transport of the entire Tokoro island arc is inferred. We exclude the possibility of displacement with the Kula plate and coast‐parallel transport; instead, intra‐oceanic motion with the Pacific plate and docking at the Eurasian margin at circa 30 Ma are inferred. Combined paleomagnetic data from the Tokoro belt, the Nemuro belt and Kamchatka region imply that a system of intra‐oceanic island arcs existed in the northwest Pacific in Late Cretaceous time.

The isotopic dating of U-Pb by the zircon method of volcanic acid zircons of the Konachan complex (Algansky mountains, northwestern part of the Koryak highlands) confirmed their Late Eocene age (34.6 ± 0.5-38.8 ± 0.4 Ma, Priabon). It has been shown that silicic rocks are represented by moderately potassium, peraluminous (ASI = 1.23–1.30), moderately and high magnesian differences, often with a high content of Cr and Ni. The contents of Sr, Y and Yb are adakite. High ratios of 143Nd/144Nd and low 87Sr/86Sr in the rocks of the complex, the distribution pattern of rare and rare-earth elements suggest that the source of salite melt, to some extent contaminated by sedimentary material, was metabasites. The formation of the Konachan complex is caused by magmatism during accretion of terranes of the Olyutor-East Kamchatka island-arc system [27]; compression processes led to the blocking of the upwelling front of the continental asthenosphere, initiating intense crustal anatexis and silicate magmatism.
