Abstract Geochemical study of volcaniclastic material and radiocarbon dating of charred plant debris from Holocene deposits of the Guram site, which is located in vicinity of Vetrovoi Isthmus on Iturup Island, demonstrate that an explosive eruption (VEI 4-5) occurred there about 2000 years ago. The geochemical and age similarity with the tephra of marker layer CKr that was distinguished on Iturup, Urup, Simushir, Rasshua, and Matua islands of the Kuril Island Arc led to the conclusion that this eruption is possibly a source of this tephra. The data presented are proposed as a motivation for revision of the volcanic hazard on Iturup Island.

Experimental Modeling of Noble and Chalcophile Elements Fractionation during Solidification of Cu-Fe-Ni-S Melt

We carried out a directed crystallization of a melt of the following composition (in mol. %): Fe 31.79, Cu 15.94, Ni 1.70, S 50.20, Sn 0.05, As 0.04, Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Ag, Au, Se, Te, Bi, and Sb by 0.03. The obtained cylindrical sample consisted of monosulfide solid solution (mss), nonstoichometric isocubanite (icb*), and three modifications of intermediate solid solution (iss1, iss2, iss3) crystallized from the melt. The simultaneous formation of two types of liquids separated during cooling of the parent sulfide melt was revealed. In the first, concentrations of noble metals associated with Bi, Sb, and Te were found. The second is related to Cu and was found to contain a large amount of S in addition to Bi and Sb. We established the main types of inclusions formed during fractional crystallization of Pt-bearing sulfide melt. It was shown that noble metals are concentrated in inclusions in the form of RuS2, PdTe2, (Pt,Pd)Te2, PtRhAsS, and Ag2Se, doped with Ag, Cu, and Pd, in mss and in the form of PtAs2; Au-doped with Ag, Cu, and Pd; Ag2Te; and Pd(Bi,Sb)xTe1−x in icb* and iss. As solid solutions in the base metal sulfides, Rh is present in mss, Sn in iss.

The first discovery of oxyborates in the rocks of the Norilsk-1 intrusion (northwest of the Siberian platform)

We found five boron minerals in the taxitic gabbrodolerites near the upper contact of the Norilsk-1 ore-bearing intrusion. These are kotoite Mg3(BO3)2, suanite Mg2B2O5, warwickite (Mg,Ti,Fe,Cr,Al)2O(BO3), ludwigite (Mg)2Fe3+O2(BO3), and azoproite (Mg,Fe2+)2(Fe3+,Ti,Mg)O2(BO3). This is the first discovery of oxyborate minerals in the Norilsk province. They form monomineral and polymineral inclusions in olivine grains from the recrystallized areas of the taxitic intrusive rocks. Boron minerals arose at the late stage of the magma crystallization or just after that as a result of the interaction of the rock with the boron-bearing fluid containing in the ore-bearing magma. Presence of the micro inclusions of the oxyborates as well as higher boron content in rocks can be used as a criterion for searching of the Pt-Cu-Ni-bearing intrusions in the Norilsk province.

Comparative mineralogy, geochemistry and petrology of aillikites and carbonatites, ijolites, melteigites and Ne-syenites of Beloziminsky massif- insights to origin

Beloziminsky alkaline ultramafic carbonatite massif (BZM) includes carbonatites, ijolites, meltegites, syenites (CIMS) layers and bodies and aillikites intrusions (∼ 645 - 621 Ma) within massif and Yuzhnaya pipe (YuP), locating in 16 km eastward. Comparisons of mineralogy and geochemistry of 19 CIMS samples (>1100 analyses) and > 16 aillikites (>2300 analyses) locating within the BZM and accounting aillikite minerals from pipes and dykes outside the massif (Ashchepkov et al., 2020) (all together >5400) reveal great difference for rock-forming minerals and less for the accessories. The analyses of the pyroxenes in aillikite correspond to mantle Cr-diopside xenocrysts and megacrystic augites. The low-Na Ti-augites and diopsides as well as aegirines prevail in carbonatites-ijolites-melteigites –syenites intrusive bodies (CIMS suit). Amphiboles show long trend from hornblendes to richterites. The in dolomitic carbonates include also admixtures of Na, K, Ba and Ca- carbonatites often contain Sr, The aillikitic carbonates are rich in Mg or Ca and CIMS rocks together with Ca-Mg carbonatites also often include siderites. Thermobarometry for YuP and Yuzhnaya pipe outside BZM containing Cr-diopsides, Cr-phlogopites, Cr-spinels (P ∼ 4–2 GPa, T ∼ 800–1250°C) and xenocrysts of augites with elevated HFSE, U, Th. Al-augites tracing 90 mW/m2 geotherm. The huge thermal impact of plume produced Rodinia breakdown series of ultramafic-alkaline-carbonatite massifs. Initially aillikites in mantle originated due to melting of carbonated metasomatites containing ilmenite, perovskites, apatites, amphiboles and phlogopites created by subduction related melts. Additional enrichment in ore components may occurred in low crust due to liquation. The aillikites inside BZM contain low-temperature clinopyroxenes tracing steep advective geotherm (0.4–1.5 GPa) and clots related to intermediate magma chambers together with CIMS pyroxenes and amphiboles. This suggests that the liquation of aillikites was accompanied later by density separation and AFC fractionation with the participation of crust material. Trace elements (especially REE) in silicate minerals, carbonates, apatites, and accessories (perovskites, pyrochlores, monazites, columbites zircons, ancylites etc). show general rise of the REE levels and La/Ybn rations from aillikites to ijolites and later to Fe-cabonatites. Presence of zircons, monazites, columbite- tantalites and other Zr-Hf and Ta-Nb minerals (perovskite, tantalites etc) in BZM aillikites occurred due to the mixing with the silicate melts with the carbonate-rich magmas in deep levels and later in massif. In aillikites any of them are of xenocrysts. Apatites and perovskites show high REE levels. The carbonate-silicate magmas passed through the system of polybaric magmatic chambers and liquated carbonatites. Late aillikites captured and mixed all varieties and xenocrysts.

THE APPLICATION OF SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY USING ENERGY- AND WAVELENGTH DISPERSIVE SPECTROMETERS FOR CHEMICAL DATING OF URANIUM MINERALIZATION ON THE EXAMPLE OF CARBONACEOUS SHALES OF THE DABANZHALGA SUITE (EAST SAYAN)

On the one hand, the widespread use of electron microprobe analysis in the version of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and, on the other hand, the comparability of the metrological characteristics of the EDS and wavelength dispersive spectrometry (WDS) in the case of determining the major components of minerals are a favourable background for investigating the possibility of using SEM-EDS for chemical dating of uranium mineralization. Carbonaceous-siliceous formations of the Dabanzhalga suite are widespread in carbonate deposits of the Lower Paleozoic in the Oka structural-formational zone of the East Sayan and represent deep-water deposits of the back-arc basin. All varieties of carbonaceous-siliceous rocks of the Dabanzhalga suite are characterized by increased U, Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Mo, V, P, Cu. Their amounts are 5–10 times higher than those for other black shale deposits of the Eastern Sayan. Uranium forms its minerals – uraninite and brannerite, in association with carbonaceous matter and sulfides, and is also part of anhydrous phosphates – xenotime, monazite. The paper presents data on the composition and dating of brannerite and uraninite in samples of carbonaceous-siliceous shale sampled at three sites: Uber-Zhadoy, Deed-Khara-Zhalga and Erye-Khara-Zhalga. The obtained estimates of the isochronous dates of uraninite and brannerite grains for these areas are 523±26, 506±10, and 511±17 Ma, respectively. It was shown that these dates could be compared with the age of metamorphism at the Sukhoi Log deposit, estimated using modern methods of isotope geochronology. It should be noted that the average estimates of the dates of uraninite and brannerite in all studied areas of the Dabanzhalga suite are lower than the corresponding estimates of the isochronous date, which is probably due to the partial loss of radiogenic lead. For the Uber-Zhadoy site, a comparison of the EDS and WDS data was carried out, and it was shown that when using the EDS data, there is an underestimation of the Pb content in uraninite, and, as a consequence, an underestimation of the age of uraninite.
