Integration of FeOOH and Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework‐Derived Nanoporous Carbon as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Water Oxidation

Abstract As a cost‐effective catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the potential use of FeOOH is hindered by its intrinsic poor electron conductivity. Here, the significant enhancement of OER activity and long‐term stability of electrodeposited FeOOH on zeolitic imidazolate framework‐derived N‐doped porous carbons (NPCs) are reported. In alkaline media, FeOOH/NPC supported on nickel foam as a 3D electrode delivers a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at a small overpotential of 230 mV and exhibits a low Tafel slope of 33.8 mV dec −1 as well as excellent durability, making it one of the most active OER catalysts. Such high performance is attributed to a combined effect of the excellent electron conductivity of NPC and the synergy between FeOOH and NiO derived from Ni substrate.

Achieving High Open‐Circuit Voltages up to 1.57 V in Hole‐Transport‐Material‐Free MAPbBr₃ Solar Cells with Carbon Electrodes

Abstract An open‐circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 1.57 V under simulated AM1.5 sunlight in planar MAPbBr 3 solar cells with carbon (graphite) electrodes is obtained. The hole‐transport‐material‐free MAPbBr 3 solar cells with the normal architecture (FTO/TiO 2 /MAPbBr 3 /carbon) show little hysteresis during current–voltage sweep under simulated AM1.5 sunlight. A solar‐to‐electricity power conversion efficiency of 8.70% is achieved with the champion device. Accordingly, it is proposed that the carbon electrodes are effective to extract photogenerated holes in MAPbBr 3 solar cells, and the industry‐applicable carbon electrodes will not limit the performance of bromide‐based perovskite solar cells. Based on the analysis of the band alignment, it is found that the voltage (energy) loss across the interface between MAPbBr 3 and carbon is very small compared to the offset between the valence band maximum of MAPbBr 3 and the work function of graphite. This finding implies either Fermi level pinning or highly doped region inside MAPbBr 3 layer exists. The band‐edge electroluminescence spectra of MAPbBr 3 from the solar cells further support no back‐transfer pathways of electrons across the MAPbBr 3 /TiO 2 interface.

Monolithic FAPbBr3 photoanode for photoelectrochemical water oxidation with low onset-potential and enhanced stability

Despite considerable research efforts on photoelectrochemical water splitting over the past decades, practical application faces challenges by the absence of efficient, stable, and scalable photoelectrodes. Herein, we report a metal-halide perovskite-based photoanode for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. With a planar structure using mesoporous carbon as a hole-conducting layer, the precious metal-free FAPbBr3 photovoltaic device achieves 9.2% solar-to-electrical power conversion efficiency and 1.4 V open-circuit voltage. The photovoltaic architecture successfully applies to build a monolithic photoanode with the FAPbBr3 absorber, carbon/graphite conductive protection layers, and NiFe catalyst layers for water oxidation. The photoanode delivers ultralow onset potential below 0 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode and high applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 8.5%. Stable operation exceeding 100 h under solar illumination by applying ultraviolet-filter protection. The photothermal investigation verifies the performance boost in perovskite photoanode by photothermal effect. This study is significant in guiding the development of photovoltaic material-based photoelectrodes for solar fuel applications.

In article number 1902935 by Jungang Hou and co-workers, a 3D porous In2O3/In2S3 pyramid array is fabricated by an ion exchange–induced strategy. Based on synergistic structural and electronic modulations, the 3D protective In2O3/In2S3 photoanode delivers the highest photocurrent of 8.2 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and stability for photo-electrochemical (PEC) water splitting among all the In2S3 photoanodes reported to date.

Chemistry Future: Priorities and Opportunities from the Sustainability Perspective

Abstract To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of ChemSusChem, we as the chairmen of the editorial board are writing this Essay to summarize important scientific contributions to our journal during the past decade in terms of sustainable science and technology. Bibliometric analysis of published papers show that biorefinery, solar energy conversion, energy‐storage materials, and carbon dioxide utilizations attracted most attention in this area. According to our own knowledge and understanding and from the sustainability point of view, we are also pointing out those research directions that we believe can play key roles in the future chemistry to meet the grand challenges in energy and environment. Hopefully, these perspective aspects will provide the readers with new angles to look at the chemistry in the coming decades and inspire the development of new technologies to make our society sustainable.

Efficient dye-sensitized solar cells based on an iodine-free electrolyte using l-cysteine/l-cystine as a redox couple

A new iodine-free electrolyte based on amino acids L-cysteine/L-cystine as a redox couple has been designed and synthesized. DSSCs fabricated with the conventional I−/I3− redox couple gave efficiencies of 8.1% and 6.3% under optimized experimental conditions based on ruthenium dye, N719, and metal-free organic dye, TH202, respectively. Based on the same dyes, the DSSCs employing the new L-cysteine/L-cystine redox couple showed comparable efficiencies of 7.7% and 5.6%, respectively. However, higher incident-photon-to-electron (IPCE) conversion efficiencies and larger Jsc values were found for devices with the L-cysteine/L-cystine redox couple than with I−/I3−. From an electrochemical impedance spectroscopic study, we found that the charge recombination between the conduction band electrons in the TiO2 film and the electrolyte containing the L-cysteine/L-cystine redox couple is restrained.

Tracking the correlation between spintronic structure and oxygen evolution reaction mechanism of cobalt-ruthenium-based electrocatalyst

Regulating the spintronic structure of electrocatalysts can improve the oxygen evolution reaction performance efficiently. Nonetheless, the effects of tuning the spintronic structure for the oxygen evolution reaction mechanisms have rarely been discussed. Here, we show a ruthenium-cobalt-tin oxide with optimized spintronic structure due to the quantum spin interaction of Ru and Co. The specific spintronic structure of ruthenium-cobalt-tin oxide promotes the charge transfer kinetics and intermediates evolution behavior under applied potential, generating long-lived active species with higher spin density sites for the oxygen evolution reaction after the reconstruction process. Moreover, the ruthenium-cobalt-tin oxide possesses decoupled proton-electron transfer procedure during the oxygen evolution reaction process, demonstrating that the electron transfer procedure of O-O bond formation between *O intermediate and lattice oxygen in Co-O-Ru is the rate-determining step of the oxygen evolution reaction process. This work provides rational perspectives on the correlation between spintronic structure and oxygen evolution reaction mechanism. Tuning the spintronic structure in oxygen evolution reactions is underexplored, despite its potential to enhance catalytic performance. Here, the authors report a ruthenium-cobalt-tin oxide with an optimized spintronic structure, highlighting its improved performance and reaction mechanisms.
