A Numerical 1.5D Method for the Rapid Simulation of Geophysical Resistivity Measurements

In some geological formations, borehole resistivity measurements can be simulated using a sequence of 1D models. By considering a 1D layered media, we can reduce the dimensionality of the problem from 3D to 1.5D via a Hankel transform. The resulting formulation is often solved via a semi-analytic method, mainly due to its high performance. However, semi-analytic methods have important limitations such as, for example, their inability to model piecewise linear variations on the resistivity. Herein, we develop a multi-scale finite element method (FEM) to solve the secondary field formulation. This numerical scheme overcomes the limitations of semi-analytic methods while still delivering high performance. We illustrate the performance of the method with numerical synthetic examples based on two symmetric logging-while-drilling (LWD) induction devices operating at 2 MHz and 500 KHz, respectively.

A new mechanism for mineralizing systems based on cnoidal wave instabilities

The formation of mineral deposits in mesothermal quartz veins is a complex process that has been the subject of much research. The classical fault-valve hypothesis suggests that mineralization occurs when metamorphic fluids are injected during a brittle event and then locked in to mineralize, but this hypothesis does not fully explain the regular spacing of repeated mineralized patterns that are often observed. This paper proposes a new mechanism for mineralizing systems based on the theory of cnoidal waves in solids. Cnoidal waves are standing waves that can persist for long times in materials under compressive and extensional regimes. We investigate mineral deposits by analytical and numerical methods and show that the cnoidal wave instability theory provides a plausible alternative mechanism for mineralizing systems. This study opens a new avenue for field studies to demonstrate that the mechanism-based cnoidal waves play an essential role in the formation of mineral deposits.

Dendritic Growth Patterns in Rocks: Inverting the Driving and Triggering Mechanisms

Abstract Mineral precipitation can form complex patterns under non‐equilibrium conditions, in which two representative patterns are rhythmic Liesegang stripes and fractal dendrites. Interestingly, both patterns occur in the same rock formations, including various dendritic morphologies found in different rocks, such as limestone and sandstone. However, the underlying mechanism for selecting the vastly different mineral precipitation patterns remains unclear. We use a phase‐field model to reveal the mechanisms driving pattern selection in mineral precipitation. Simulations allow us to explore the effects of diffusion parameters on determining the dendritic morphologies. We also propose a general criterion to distinguish the resulting dendrites in simulations and field observations based on a qualitative visual distinction into three categories and a quantitative fractal dimension (FD) phase diagram. Using this model, we reproduce the classified dendrites in the field and invert for the key parameters that reflect the intrinsic material properties and geological environments. This study provides a quantitative tool for identifying the morphology selection mechanism with potential applications to geological field studies, exploration for resource evaluation, and other potential industrial applications.

Electromagnetic Response Prediction for Conductive, Permeable, Heterogeneous Steel-cased Wells

Summary Steel-cased wells can be used as galvanic sources to detect and estimate variations in subsurface electrical conductivity. Most of the modeling approaches are based on approximations to the casing and ignore the variations in magnetic permeability. In this paper, we investigate the impact of varying electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability on the electromagnetic response of steel-cased wells. As an example, we consider a full three-dimensional realistic representation of a steel-cased well in the surface-to-borehole and borehole-to-surface configurations. We show how the variable conductivity and permeability along the length of the casing can affect the electromagnetic measurements.

Localized folding of thick layers

We describe the localized folding of thick layers embedded in a viscoelastic framework. Higher-order partial differential equations such as the Swift-Hohenberg equation are standard for modelling the folding process. Using a high-order shear theory, we modify the Swift-Hohenberg equation to describe the buckling of thick layers and consider the folded layer's viscoelastic behavior. The use of thick layers enables us to consider shear strains parallel to the layers during folding. Our model naturally captures the softening-stiffening behavior by including a non-linear viscoelastic description using a Winkler-type foundation. Next, we study the linear stability behavior of the system and derive the dispersion relations. Finally, we simulate this new model using a robust custom-built isogeometric analysis solver, which allows us to describe thick folded layers with localized folding. The numerical results show that the folding of an elastic layer produces periodic patterns while a viscoelastic layer deflects locally. When the horizontal forces are unequal, the periodic folds initiate in the direction of the smaller force and the localized deformations occur parallel to the larger force. Later, the nonlocal deformation occurs in the direction of a smaller force. Domes and basins or more linear ridges and valleys are formed according to the relative magnitudes of the applied forces. Domes and basins are the results of equal horizontal applied forces, and non-equal forces result in ridges and valleys.

Recent advances on the inversion of deep directional borehole resistivity measurements

SummaryWe describe our latest developments on the inversion of subsurface electrical resistivity from deep directional borehole resistivity measurements. Two different methods are introduced for fast inversion of tri-axial induction measurements with multiple transmitter-receiver positions. The first one approximates transversely isotropic (TI) formations with a sequence of “stitched” 1D planarly layered TI sections, which efficiently approximates the solution via 1.5D simulations. The second method uses a pixel-based inversion approach and employs full 3D modelling of borehole EM induction with either an iterative or a direct solver. This enables the inversion of spatial distributions of electrical resistivity of any complexity without restrictions on the symmetry of the models. Numerical examples for several challenging synthetic conditions confirm the accuracy and efficiency of the developed algorithms.
