A Holocene history of high bluffs, strandplains, terraces, and dunes along the southeastern margin of Lake Superior (Michigan, USA) with reference to fluctuating lake levels

The strandplains of the southeast Lake Superior coastline between Au Sable Point and Whitefish Point, Michigan, USA, record a response to Holocene lake-level variation (∼75 m), changing sediment supply, and accommodation space, and are good analogues for future shoreline behaviors associated with water-level changes along lacustrine and marine coastlines. A variety of datasets were used to explore these thick and extensive coastal deposits and to extend further back in time the available relative lake-level curve for the Lake Superior basin. Little is known about the coastal history prior to the Nipissing phase (6−2.8 ka) and what the geomorphic effect was from high rates of water-level rise (∼2−4 cm/yr) during the Nipissing transgression (ca. 8−4.5 ka). Rising and peak water levels eroded into glaciofluvial deposits, which resulted in eastward littoral transport of massive amounts of sediment that led to aggradation and basinward progradation of strandplains during the Nipissing transgression and Nipissing phase. Strandplains developed sequentially eastward as discreet littoral cells ending at the large (∼88 km2) Whitefish Point strandplain complex. High rates of sediment supply drove a shoreline behavior of depositional transgression and depositional regression. In post-Nipissing time, erosion likely continued into glaciofluvial deposits, but falling lake levels likely resulted in decreased sediment supply. With less sediment and less accommodation space, there was an increase in west-to-east longshore sediment transport that contributed to the growth of Whitefish Point during the Algoma (2.8−2.0 ka), Sault (2.0−1.0 ka), and Sub-Sault (1.0 ka to modern) phases. Lake-level rise after 1.0 ka has resulted in retrogradation (erosional transgression) along most of the shoreline between AuSable Point and Whitefish Point.

Stratigraphic and chronologic analysis of the Warren Beach, northwest Ohio, USA

The current understanding of Lake Warren as a proglacial lake stage in the Lake Erie basin during the last deglaciation is based on limited stratigraphic information from strandlines and a wide range of radiocarbon ages. The purpose of this study is to use ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to reconstruct the stratigraphy, depositional environment, and age of the Oak Openings Ridge (OOR), a former strandline of Lake Warren in northwestern Ohio. Both sedimentary exposures and >4 km of GPR data were used to demonstrate that the OOR is a barrier spit that migrated from the northeast to the southwest, and is currently blanketed by an aeolian sheet. Sediments observed in exposures show a shallowing-up sequence attributed to the retreat of proglacial lakes from the area. Corresponding GPR data reveal three distinct GPR facies. The lowermost radar facies 1 (RF1) is a sandy barrier spit platform of a lower beach face prograding across finer-grained lacustrine mud or till. Eroded into RF1 is an upper beach face of RF2, the top of which is visible in cutbank and borrow pit exposures. Overlying the RF2 beach face is uppermost unit RF3, consisting of low-relief, aeolian parabolic dunes and sand sheets. Four OSL ages from a climbing ripple sequence in RF2 average 14.2 ± 0.5 ka, consistent with an earlier published OSL age of 14.1 ± 1.0 ka (Campbell et al. in 2011) from the same unit. From earlier work, the overlying aeolian dunes (RF3) record westerly winds after formation of the OOR, and OSL dating records episodic activity from the Younger Dryas chronozone to ∼8000 years ago. The results suggest that the OOR formed in two phases. First, a barrier spit prograded into Lake Warren from the northeast. Second, parabolic sand dunes and a sand sheet formed episodically for ∼5000 years thereafter. The sediment source for the sand body is from southeast Michigan, but it is of uncertain origin.

The shallow subsurface of the earth is vital to the well being of humankind. It is the source of many of our resources and of ground water. Where we excavate from the earth, how we build on it, and where we dispose of waste in it are of increasing concern as the global population grows. The associated need to locate objects or geological structures in the shallow subsurface in a noninvasive way is a challenge that is being met by geophysics, which has provided a range of geophysical methods and instruments suited for this purpose. One of the most successful of these methods is ground-penetrating radar (GPR), a nonseismic means of subsurface probing, which uses electromagnetic waves.

Ground penetrating radar antennae frequencies and transmitter powers compared for penetration depth, resolution and reflection continuity¹

Abstract Twelve ground penetrating radar (GPR) experiments were conducted on the modern, wave‐influenced William River delta, on the Southern shore of Lake Athabasca in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. The delta is a well‐sorted, quartzoserich, clean, sand‐dominated, water‐saturated geomorphic feature which provided an ideal site to test GPR. Penetration depths, resolution and continuity of reflections were compared for different antennae frequencies (25, 50, 100, 200 MHz) and transmitter powers (pulser voltage: 400 V, 1000 V). The data show significant variations in vertical resolution from 0.15 m to 0.76 m (200‐25 MHz), depth of penetration from 14 m‐28 m (200‐25 MHz), and continuity of reflections. Increasing the transmitter power from 400 V to 1000 V increases the depth of penetration by 5 to 14% and improves the continuity of reflections with little effect on the resolution.
