Mechanism of seasonal eddy kinetic energy variability in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean

Abstract Enhanced mesoscale eddy activities or tropical instability waves (TIWs) exist along the northern front of the cold tongue in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. In this study, we investigate seasonal variability of eddy kinetic energy (EKE) over this region and its associated dynamic mechanism using a global, eddy‐resolving ocean general circulation model (OGCM) simulation, the equatorial mooring data, and satellite altimeter observations. The seasonal‐varying enhanced EKE signals are found to expand westward from 100°W in June to 180°W in December between 0°N and 6°N. This westward expansion in EKE is closely connected to the barotropically‐baroclinically unstable zonal flows that are in thermal‐wind balance with the seasonal‐varying thermocline trough along 4°N. By adopting an 1½‐layer reduced‐gravity model, we confirm that the seasonal perturbation of the thermocline trough is dominated by the anticyclonic wind stress curl forcing, which develops due to southerly winds along 4°N from June to December.

Recent hemispheric asymmetry in global ocean warming induced by climate change and internal variability

Recent research shows that 90% of the net global ocean heat gain during 2005-2015 was confined to the southern hemisphere with little corresponding heat gain in the northern hemisphere ocean. We propose that this heating pattern of the ocean is driven by anthropogenic climate change and an asymmetric climate variation between the two hemispheres. This asymmetric variation is found in the pre-industrial control simulations from 11 climate models. While both layers (0-700 m and 700-2000 m) experience steady anthropogenic warming, the 0-700 m layer experiences large internal variability, which primarily drives the observed hemispheric asymmetry of global ocean heat gain in 0-2000 m layer. We infer that the rate of global ocean warming is consistent with the climate simulations for this period. However, the observed hemispheric asymmetry in heat gain can be explained by the Earth's internal climate variability without invoking alternate hypotheses, such as asymmetric aerosol loading.

Evolution of Sea Surface Salinity Anomalies in the Southwestern Tropical Indian Ocean During 2010–2011 Influenced by a Negative IOD Event

Abstract Using Argo observations and Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean data sets, this study investigates the sea surface salinity (SSS) variability and its relationship with ocean dynamics in the southwestern tropical Indian Ocean (SWTIO) associated with the 2010 negative Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) event. The results show that the ocean circulation in the tropical southern Indian Ocean (IO) significantly contributes to the SSS anomalies during the evolution of the negative IOD event. The anomalous eastward current advected the high‐salinity water into the eastern equatorial IO during July–October 2010. Then the positive SSS anomalies expanded southward to 6–8°S due to the southeastward mean seasonal currents in the eastern equatorial IO during November–December 2010. A salinity budget analysis has been used to identify key processes in contributing to the SSS variations in the SWTIO. The decreased precipitation in the western and central equatorial IO leads to high SSS anomalies from January to April 2011. Then the anomalous southwestward currents transport the higher SSS water from the eastern equatorial IO to the SWTIO until May–June 2011. At the same time, the upwelling Rossby waves shoal the thermocline and mixed layer depth, bringing high‐salinity subsurface water to the surface layer and cooling the sea surface temperature, which further depresses local precipitation to provide a positive feedback for the SSS increase.

Dynamics of Interannual Eddy Kinetic Energy Variability in the Sulawesi Sea Revealed by OFAM3

Abstract Interannual variations in eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in the Sulawesi Sea and their driving mechanisms are investigated based on the outputs of Ocean Forecasting Australia Model version 3 from 1979 to 2014. The interannual EKE variability is found to be primarily modulated by the Mindanao Current intrusion transport (MCIT). By regulating the intensity of barotropic instability of the cyclonic loop current in the Sulawesi Sea, the MCIT fluctuation leads to the downstream interannual EKE variations. Further analysis suggests that the paths of Mindanao Current (MC) and New Guinea Coastal Current and Undercurrent (NGCC/NGCUC) influence the interannual MCIT variability. During high‐EKE periods, the NGCC/NGCUC is weakened, and the MC retroflection extends to south of 5°N, which causes MCIT to increase by 0.60 Sv and strengthens the barotropic energy conversion from mean kinetic energy to EKE in the Sulawesi Sea. During low‐EKE periods, the NGCC/NGCUC is intensified whereas the MC retroflection retreats to a northernmost path, resulting in a decrease of 0.58 Sv in MCIT and thus a low EKE level. In addition, mesoscale eddies to the east of the Sulawesi Sea in the western Pacific also have an impact on the MC intrusion. This study highlights the significance of the nonlinear dynamics of western boundary currents in modulating eddy activities in the formation region of the Indonesian Throughflow.

Freshening anomalies in the Indonesian throughflow and impacts on the Leeuwin Current during 2010-2011

During the 2010–2011 La Niña and Ningaloo Niño, excessive precipitations in the Maritime Continent and Indonesian-Australian Basin caused surface waters to freshen by 0.3 practical salinity unit in the southeast Indian Ocean. The low-salinity anomalies are observed to be carried westward by the Indonesian throughflow and the South Equatorial Current and transmitted into the poleward flowing eastern boundary current, the Leeuwin Current, along the Western Australian coast. Low-salinity anomalies contribute to about 30% of the anomalous increase of the southward Leeuwin Current transport during the evolution of the 2010–2011 Ningaloo Niño, resulting in unprecedented warming off the coast of Western Australia. Episodical freshening of the Leeuwin Current has been observed at the Rottnest coastal reference station of Western Australia during extended La Niña conditions over the past several decades; low-salinity anomalies at the station during the 2010–2011 Ningaloo Niño are comparable with strong historical events.

Pb’s high sedimentation inside the bay mouth of Jiaozhou Bay

Sedimentation is one of the key environmental behaviors of pollutants in the ocean. This paper analyzed the seasonal and temporal variations of Pb's sedimentation process in Jiaozhou Bay in 1987. Results showed that Pb contents in bottom waters in Jiaozhou Bay in May, July and November 1987 were 1.87-2.60 μg L-1, 15.11-19.68 μg L-1 and 11.08-15.18 μg L-1, and the pollution levels of Pb in May, July and November 1987 were slight, heavy and heavy, respectively. In May 1987, there was low sedimentation process in waters in the outside of the bay mouth, yet were high sedimentation process in waters in the middle and inside of the bay mouth. In July and November 1987, there was low sedimentation process in waters in the outside of the bay mouth, yet were high sedimentation process in waters in the inside of the bay mouth. The seasonal-temporal variation of sedimentation processes of Pb were determined by the variations of sources input and the vertical water's effect.
