Defining groundwater age. Chapter 3

This book investigates applications of selected chemical and isotopic substances that can be used to recognize and interpret age information pertaining to 'old' groundwater (defined as water that was recharged on a timescale from approximately 1000 to more than 1 000 000 a). However, as discussed below, only estimates of the 'age' of water extracted from wells can be inferred. These groundwater age estimates are interpreted from measured concentrations of chemical and isotopic substances in the groundwater. Even then, there are many complicating factors, as discussed in this book. In spite of these limitations, much can be learned about the physics of groundwater flow and about the temporal aspects of groundwater systems from age interpretations of measured concentrations of environmental tracers in groundwater systems. This chapter puts the concept of 'age' into context, including its meaning and interpretation, and attempts to provide a unifying usage for the rest of the book.

River infiltration to a subtropical alluvial aquifer inferred using multiple environmental tracers

Abstract Chloride (Cl − ), stable isotope ratios of water (δ 18 O and δ 2 H), sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ), tritium ( 3 H), carbon‐14 ( 14 C), noble gases ( 4 He, Ne, and Ar), and hydrometry were used to characterize groundwater‐surface water interactions, in particular infiltration rates, for the Lower Namoi River (New South Wales, Australia). The study period (four sampling campaigns between November 2009 and November 2011) represented the end of a decade‐long drought followed by several high‐flow events. The hydrometry showed that the river was generally losing to the alluvium, except when storm‐derived floodwaves in the river channel generated bank recharge—discharge cycles. Using 3 H/ 14 C‐derived estimates of groundwater mean residence time along the transect, infiltration rates ranged from 0.6 to 5 m yr −1 . However, when using the peak transition age (a more realistic estimate of travel time in highly dispersive environments), the range in infiltration rate was larger (4–270 m yr −1 ). Both river water (highest δ 2 H, δ 18 O, SF 6 , 3 H, and 14 C) and an older groundwater source (lowest δ 2 H, δ 18 O, SF 6 , 3 H, 14 C, and highest 4 He) were found in the riparian zone. This old groundwater end‐member may represent leakage from an underlying confined aquifer (Great Artesian Basin). Environmental tracers may be used to estimate infiltration rates in this riparian environment but the presence of multiple sources of water and a high dispersion induced by frequent variations in the water table complicates their interpretation.

Isotope records in submarine speleothems from the Adriatic coast, Croatia

Abstract Isotope studies, using 14C dating, δ13C and δ18O measurements, were performed at eight speleothems taken from three submerged caves situated along the eastern Adriatic coast, Croatia. The speleothems were taken from 17 m to 38.5 m depth below mean sea level. The samples consist of four stalagmites and four stalactites in position of growth, covered with marine biogenic overgrowth, and the length of speleothems ranges from ~80 mm to ~190 mm. The youngest (surface) and the oldest (base) layers of speleothems were radiocarbon dated and the 14C ages range from 21,600 cal B.P. to 37,000 yr B.P. During that period the global sea level was more than 40 m below the recent one, so presently submerged objects were under the subaerial conditions necessary for speleothem deposition. 14C ages of the youngest layer range from 21,600 to 32,200 cal B.P. for different submerged speleothems. This indicates the time when the speleothem growth ceased, most probably due to flooding of the cave with either fresh or brackish water. Speleothem growth during the Last Glacial Maximum (30–19 kyr ago) and different time of growth cessation for the different speleothem samples suggest that climate change was not the reason for cessation of deposition. Samples for δ13C and δ18O measurements were taken from six submerged speleothems with sampling distances of ca. 5–10 mm from the surface to the base of speleothems. Most of the δ13C values are in the range from −10.5‰ to −8.5‰, with few exceptions to −6‰. These values are typical for Dinaric karst, and very different values for marine biogenic overgrowth indicate that no isotopic exchange took place during the submerged period. δ18O values range from −6.7‰ to −4.1‰. A weak correlation between δ13C and δ18O values indicates possible kinetic isotope fractionation during the calcite precipitation. If the δ18O record is interpreted as climatic signal, it suggests similar climatic conditions for the late Pleistocene and the Holocene, especially no significant differences in temperature and/or moisture transport.

A geochronological survey of the Bengal shelf area involved results from more than 20 sediment cores dated using gamma spectrometry and the nuclides 137 Cs, 228 Ra, 226 Ra, and 210 Pb. In some cores, which contained older sediments, 32 Si and 14 C were determined to examine the possibility to extrapolate the obtained chronologies to century and millennial scale. Geochronological work in this region is faced with problems of cyclone-induced sediment reworking, grain-size effects on fallout nuclides, scarcity of carbonates, unknown 14 C reservoir effect and sedimentation rates that are too high to obtain sediment cores long enough to establish a chronology. Despite these problems, comparison between the results of the different dating methods provided the most reliable sediment balance to date for the submarine delta of the Ganges-Brahmaputra river system and indicated that on a time scale of several centuries at least 35% of the annual sediment load is deposited.

Environmental Tracers to Study the Origin and Timescales of Spring Waters

Environmental tracers can add valuable insights to the assessment of spring vulnerability that are not available with any other method. They can identify the origin of contaminants, help to specify from which aquifer formation(s) the water originates, give clues on the infiltration conditions of the water such as temperature and altitude to identify recharge locations and processes, and define the timescales of groundwater flow and, in ideal cases, deconvolute the age distribution. Environmental tracers will rarely directly define the vulnerability of springs toward changes in hydraulic gradient, but they may give invaluable contributions to a conceptualization that is the basis for assessing the impact of a change in hydraulic gradients. The available tracer tools are discussed in this chapter and brought into the context of other investigations such as conceptual hydrogeological models, geophysics, and hydrochemistry. A detailed case study demonstrates the capabilities under ideal conditions.
