Evaluation of Time-Rated Infiltration Families for Noncracking Soils

The time-rated infiltration families proposed by Merriam and Clemmens were further developed and evaluated using infiltration data for noncracking soils. Infiltration experiments were monitored, using a double-ring infiltrometer, at 10 field sites in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Published infiltration data for soils in Botswana were also included to extend the range of soil types and field conditions in the study. A methodology was developed for identifying the infiltration family of soil at a given field. The time-rated infiltration family concept along with the methodology developed was evaluated under a range of field conditions. For 80% of field situations, the error introduced in infiltration characteristics due to the use of the family concept is <35% with an average value of the error about 20%. The infiltration characteristics of soil at a given site in this study exhibited a high variability although the measurements were made only a few meters apart. This observation reinforces potential benefits of using infiltration family concepts in the design and management of irrigation systems.

Community perspectives on managing health of peri-urban river system: evidence from the Hawkesbury-Nepean river catchment, Australia

In this study, we examine aspects of community values and perspectives on goods and services received from the river along with issues related to sustainable management of the river. The study reveals that the contemporary values placed on rivers by communities are mostly associated with recreational and leisure activities. The distance from the river and age of the participants appeared as the most influential social demographic factors affecting participants' perspectives on river health. The study indicates that people tend to develop a strong bond with the natural resources around them and the amount of time spent at a location is directly related to the strength of this relationship. To assess the general river condition and health, a number of visual indicators (e.g., floating debris) were suggested. If properly standardised and calibrated, such indicators have the potential to develop cost-effective monitoring tools for detecting seasonal and spatial changes in river health.

Hydrologic and cost benefit analysis at local scale of streambed recharge structures in Rajasthan (India) and their value for securing irrigation water supplies

A hydrological study of four streambed recharge structures, locally called check dams, in a monsoonal area of hard-rock terrain in Rajasthan, India, was conducted over 3 years to evaluate their contribution to agricultural production. Their catchment area totalled 3,003 ha, and mean annual recharge from the 4 impoundments was 779,000 m3 or 26 mm. The calculated components of the annual water balance of these check dams are presented, together with a sensitivity analysis on unmeasured parameters and documentation of capital and maintenance costs of check dams. The maximum recharge was found to occur in the wettest year for the two structures on first-order streams; however, for the two structures on second-order streams, the maximum recharge occurred in the average rainfall year because, at these sites, groundwater levels rose so that the stream became hydraulically connected to the aquifer for a period in the wettest year causing mean dry weather infiltration rates to diminish. The study also evaluated the effect of manual desilting and mechanical desilting on mean dry-weather-infiltration rate. For the check dam that was manually desilted, the recharge increased by 84% over that of the preceding year, whereas for the mechanically desilted check dam it reduced by 18%, and the two control check dams increased by 13%. A present value analysis for net benefits of additional crop production attributable to recharge from check dams indicated that, after accounting for average annual maintenance costs 2.9% of capital costs, the benefit:cost ratio of the four check dams averaged 4.1. Hence this study shows that these check dams are economically attractive at the local level for securing irrigation water supplies.

Understanding Groundwater Storage Changes and Recharge in Rajasthan, India through Remote Sensing

Groundwater management practices need to take hydrogeology, the agro-climate and demand for groundwater into account. Since agroclimatic zones have already been demarcated by the Government of India, it would aid policy makers to understand the status of groundwater recharge and discharge in each agroclimatic zone. However, developing effective policies to manage groundwater at agroclimatic zone and state levels is constrained due to a paucity of temporal data and information. With the launch of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission in 2002, it is now possible to obtain frequent data at broad spatial scales and use it to examine past trends in rain induced recharge and groundwater use. In this study, the GRACE data were used to estimate changes to monthly total water storage (TWS) and groundwater storage in different agroclimatic zones of Rajasthan, India. Furthermore, the long-term annual and seasonal groundwater storage trends in the state were estimated using the GRACE data and the trends were compared with those in rainfall data. The methodology based on GRACE data was found to be useful in detecting large scale trends in groundwater storage changes covering different agroclimatic zones. The analysis of data shows that groundwater storage trends depend on rainfall in previous years and, therefore, on the antecedent moisture conditions. Overall, the study indicates that if suitable groundwater recharge methods and sites are identified for the state, there is potential to achieve more groundwater recharge than what is currently occurring and, thus, enhancing the availability of water for irrigated agriculture.

Evolving research on groundwater governance and collective action for water security: A Global bibliometric analysis

Groundwater is a significant source of freshwater supply globally. State-mandated groundwater regulatory frameworks are often pervasive and have failed to reap tangible outcomes. The participatory approach of groundwater governance has surfaced to understand human-groundwater relations through collective action going beyond the techno-managerial paradigm. Hence, the study is carried out to provide a comprehensive and systematic review of the evolution and trends of research in groundwater governance and collective action deploying bibliometric analysis to understand the political economy of groundwater. A total of 356 scholarly peer-reviewed and grey literature published from 2000 to 2022 was compiled. A substantial increase in publications after 2013 was observed. USA and India lead in publication contributions in terms of geographical distribution. Three peer-reviewed journals were prominent publishing outlets: Hydrogeology, Water, and Water Alternatives. The analysis of 814 keywords co-occurrence shows that "groundwater," "governance," and "collective action" were the most extensively used keywords. The emerging themes observed are governance and institutions, cooperative management, and policy. Our findings signify that cooperative management or collective action will be prioritised to understand human-groundwater relations by making the invisible resource visible through integrating socio-cultural perspectives.
