Solvation Sheath Reorganization by Alkyl Chain Tuning Promises Lean-Electrolyte Li–S Batteries

Sparsely solvating electrolyte (SSE), which can achieve a quasi-solid-phase sulfur reaction path, stands out as a promising strategy to alleviate the dependence on electrolyte usage and construct lean-electrolyte lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Nonetheless, its formation relies upon a high dosage of salt and diluent, thereby leading to increased electrolyte cost. To this end, we herein customize a localized SSE (LSSE) featuring a low ratio of salt-to-solvent and diluent-to-solvent through alkyl chain tuning. A multimodal 2D nuclear magnetic resonance technique is developed to unveil the Li-ion solvation sheath reorganization, which is crucial for studying the coordination and dynamics in liquid electrolytes. LSSE affords an anion-derived solid electrolyte interface and effective restriction of the shuttling effect; hence, our Li–S batteries can sustain a steady operation under 4 μL mgS–1 and 3 mg cm–2. Our work opens a new avenue for advancing SSE design in the pursuit of pragmatic lean-electrolyte Li–S batteries.

Kinetically Favorable Li–S Battery Electrolytes

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries suffer from rampant polysulfide shuttling and sluggish reaction kinetics, which have curtailed sulfur utilization and deteriorated their actual performance. To circumvent these detrimental issues, electrolyte engineering is a reliable strategy to control polysulfide behavior and facilitate reaction kinetics. However, the electrolyte–polysulfide nexus remains elusive, and the electrolyte design principle is far from clear, especially for pragmatic application. In this Review, key approaches to obtain kinetically favorable Li–S battery electrolytes are elucidated from three perspectives: (i) high-donor-number components, (ii) homogeneous catalysts, and (iii) endogenous co-mediators. Particular attention is paid to probing the underlying working mechanism. In addition, reaction kinetics and electrochemical performances are systematically studied, especially highlighting the strategic effectiveness of kinetically favorable Li–S battery electrolytes in lean-electrolyte conditions. This Review aims to offer meaningful guidance for the rational design of kinetically favorable electrolytes to enhance the performance and advance the commercialization of Li–S batteries.

A Symmetric Aqueous Magnesium Ion Supercapattery Based on Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract Aqueous magnesium ion‐based batteries have attracted significant research interest due to the two‐electron transfer process, small cation radius, low reduction potential as well as the inert hydrogen evolution reaction. However, the high surface charge density of divalent Mg 2+ ions results in sluggish solid‐state diffusion kinetics, which significantly limits the number of host materials suitable for effective Mg 2+ ion storage. Here, for the first time, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are explored as host materials for high‐rate aqueous Mg 2+ ion batteries. Combining electrochemical and spectral characterization with theoretical simulation, a synergistic charge storage mechanism involving the reaction of nitrogen and oxygen bridged by Mg 2+ ions is revealed. Using electrochemical analysis, it is shown that the Mg 2+ ion diffusion kinetics are dominated by the surface pseudocapacitive behavior in COFs, which achieves a favorable rate performance and durable cyclic stability. This work offers a new perspective on the storage of Mg 2+ ions in COF host materials.

Versatile N‐Doped MXene Ink for Printed Electrochemical Energy Storage Application

Abstract Printing is regarded as a revolutionary and feasible technique to guide the fabrication of versatile functional systems with designed architectures. 2D MXenes are nowadays attractive in printed energy storage devices. However, owing to the van der Waals interaction between the MXene layers, the restacking issues within the printed electrodes can significantly impede the ion/electrolyte transport and hence handicap the electrochemical performances. Herein, a melamine formaldehyde templating method is demonstrated to develop crumpled nitrogen‐doped MXene (MXene‐N) nanosheets. The nitrogen doping boosts the electrochemical performances of MXene via enhanced conductivity and redox activity. Accordingly, two types of MXene‐N inks are prepared throughout the optimization of the ink viscosity to fit the 2D screen printing and 3D extrusion printing, respectively. As a result, the screen printed MXene‐N microsupercapacitor delivers an areal capacitance of 70.1 mF cm −2 and outstanding mechanical robustness. Furthermore, the 3D‐printed MXene‐N based supercapacitor manifests an areal capacitance of 8.2 F cm −2 for a three‐layered electrode and readily stores a high areal energy density of 0.42 mWh cm −2 . The approach to harnessing such versatile MXene‐N inks offers distinctive insights into the printed energy storage systems with high areal energy density and large scalability.
