Seismically active fracture zones were delineated and correlated with hypogene mineral deposits in the region of Sumatra and Java. It appears that accumulations of metals are situated in the outcrops of these deep rooted fracture zones which may effectuate a channeling of ore-bearing solutions liberated by flow of volatiles from the subduction zone.

Seismically active fracture zones in the continental wedge above the Andean subduction zone in the Arica Elbow region

In the continental lithosphere overlying the Wadati-Benioff zone in the Arica Elbow region eleven seismically active fracture zones were delineated on the basis of distribution of earthquake foci. The position and width of the trace, thickness, dip and maximum depth of individual fracture zones were estimated and complemented by tectonic and geological evidence. Existing fault plane solutions were attributed to the pertinent fracture zones and confronted with their orientation, inclination and tectonic function. The analysis shows normal faulting in the eastward dipping fractures, bordering the Andes in the west, and reverse faulting in the westward dipping fractures, limiting the Andes in the east. Fault plane orientations and slip directions indicated by earthquake focal mechanisms were used for the analysis of the state of stress in the fracture zones. The results point to the necessity of presence of fluids for the generation of earthquakes along faults in the western fracture zones. The position, inclination and stress conditions in the westernmost fracture system might influence the shift of active volcanism westwards from the surface projection of the intermediate depth aseismic gap in the Wadati-Benioff zone and cause the channeling of magma through tectonically disintegrated seismically active fracture zones.

Lithospheric structure of the Bohemian Massif and adjacent Variscan belt in central Europe based on profile S01 from the SUDETES 2003 experiment

The SUDETES 2003 seismic experiment investigated the lithospheric structure of the eastern part of the Variscan belt of central Europe. The key profile of this experiment (S01) was 630 km long and extended southwestward from the margin of the East European craton, across the Trans‐European suture zone (TESZ) and Sudetes, and across the Bohemian Massif that contains the active Eger (Ohře) rift, which is an element of the European Cenozoic rift system. Good quality first arrivals and later phases of refracted/reflected P and S waves were interpreted using 2‐D ray‐tracing techniques. The derived seismic model shows large variations in the internal structure of the crust, while the depth to the Moho varies in the relatively narrow depth interval of 28–35 km. Except for the Polish basin on the northeast end of the profile, the sedimentary cover is thin. The crystalline upper and middle crust with velocities of 5.9–6.4 km s −1 is about 20 km thick, and the 7–10 km thick lower crust can be divided into three regions based on P wave velocities: a low‐velocity region (6.5–6.6 km s −1 beneath Eger rift and Sudetes) that is bounded on the southwest and northeast by regions of significantly higher velocity (6.8–7.1 km s −1 beneath the Saxothuringian and Moldanubian in the southwest and Fore‐Sudetic Monocline and Polish Basin in the northeast). High‐velocity bodies ( Vp > 6.5 km s −1 ) were delineated in the upper crust of the Eger rift region. The seismic structure along the S01 profile images a Variscan orogenic wedge resting on the down warped margin of the plate margin containing the TESZ. This situation implies the northerly directed subduction of the Rheic Ocean that existed between the southern margin of the Old Red Continent and the Armorican terranes presently accreted into the Variscan belt. Closure of this ocean produced the Rheic suture between low‐velocity crust of the Variscan orogenic wedge and higher‐velocity crust of the TESZ.

Laboratory investigation into off-fault seismic activity

Abstract The off-fault pattern of weak seismic activity which was observed in the laboratory around fault pairs with already generated tensile cracks led to the comparison with similar patterns observed in nature in some seismoactive regions. On the basis of the results of the laboratory model experiments, the off-fault seismic activity can be attributed to fault segments oriented obliquely or roughly perpendicular to the main fault system; these fault segments may have originated as tensile fractures during one of the foregoing strong earthquakes. To study the off-fault foreshock and aftershock occurrences, a method of laboratory seismology (physical modeling) was employed. The use of this method is based on the assumption that the obtained information on the seismic regime of fault models is relevant to the seismic manifestation of faults in the Earth. The results of laboratory experiments can thus be used to analyze the pattern of seismic energy release in selected seismoactive fault regions.
