Fault Traces: Generation of Fault Segments and Estimation of Their Fractal Dimension

Abstract Fault damage zones have a higher upscaled permeability than the host rock because of a higher fracture intensity therein. Fracture distribution in the damage zone depends highly on the geometry of fault segments. However, precise images of architectural elements of large-scale faults at depth are difficult to obtain by seismic acquisition and imaging techniques. We present a numerical method that generates fault segments at multiple scales from an imprecise fault trace based on the fractal properties of these segments. The generated fault segments demonstrate hierarchical self-similar architecture, and their lengths follow approximately a lognormal distribution. These characteristics are similar to real fault segments observed in outcrops and seismic surveys. An algorithm that covers fault segments accurately with the minimum number of circles is proposed to calculate the fractal dimensions for both natural and computer-generated faults. The fractal dimensions of natural and generated fault segments are similar and range between 1.2 and 1.4.

Transient and asymptotic dispersion in confined sphere packings with cylindrical and non-cylindrical conduit geometries

We study the time and length scales of hydrodynamic dispersion in confined monodisperse sphere packings as a function of the conduit geometry. By a modified Jodrey-Tory algorithm, we generated packings at a bed porosity (interstitial void fraction) of ε=0.40 in conduits with circular, rectangular, or semicircular cross section of area 100πd(p)(2) (where d(p) is the sphere diameter) and dimensions of about 20d(p) (cylinder diameter) by 6553.6d(p) (length), 25d(p) by 12.5d(p) (rectangle sides) by 8192d(p) or 14.1d(p) (radius of semicircle) by 8192d(p), respectively. The fluid-flow velocity field in the generated packings was calculated by the lattice Boltzmann method for Péclet numbers of up to 500, and convective-diffusive mass transport of 4×10(6) inert tracers was modelled with a random-walk particle-tracking technique. We present lateral porosity and velocity distributions for all packings and monitor the time evolution of longitudinal dispersion up to the asymptotic (long-time) limit. The characteristic length scales for asymptotic behaviour are explained from the symmetry of each conduit's velocity field. Finally, we quantify the influence of the confinement and of a specific conduit geometry on the velocity dependence of the asymptotic dispersion coefficients.

Impact of Fracture Geometry and Topology on the Connectivity and Flow Properties of Stochastic Fracture Networks

Abstract In a low permeability formation, connectivity of natural and induced fractures determines overall hydraulic diffusivity in fluid flow through this formation and defines effective rock permeability. Efficient evaluation of fracture connectivity is a nontrivial task. Here, we utilize a topological concept of global efficiency to evaluate this connectivity. We address the impact of key geometrical properties of stochastic fracture networks (fracture lengths, orientations, apertures, and positions of fracture centers) on the macro‐scale flow properties of a shale‐like formation. Six thousand different realizations have been generated to characterize these properties for each fracture network. We find that a reduced graph of a fracture network, which consists of the shortest paths from the inlet nodes (fractures) to all outlet nodes, contributes most to fluid flow. Three‐dimensional (3D) fracture networks usually have higher global efficiency than two‐dimensional (2D) ones, because they have better connectivity. All geometrical properties of fractures influence quality of their connectivity. Aperture distribution impacts strongly global efficiency of a fracture network and its influence is more significant when the system is dominated by large fractures. Fracture clustering lowers global efficiency in both 2D and 3D fracture networks. Global efficiency of 2D and 3D fracture networks also decreases with the increasing exponent of the power‐law distribution of fracture lengths, which means that the connectivity of the system decreases with an increasing number of small fractures. Realistic fracture networks, composed of several sets of fractures with constrained preferred orientations, share all the characteristics of the stochastic fracture networks we have investigated.

Fracture sealing and its impact on the percolation of subsurface fracture networks

Current uderstanding of the impact of fracture sealing on macro-scale fluid flow is insufficient. Here, we generate well-connected orthogonal fracture networks in two- and three-dimensions using a discrete fracture network method. The fracture sealing is simulated by dividing fractures into segments (2D) and blocks (3D). Impacts of fracture sealing on the percolation status of orthogonal fracture networks are systematically studied. Different aperture shapes, segment lengths, and spacing distributions are broadly considered. We find that a small amount of sealing can prevent the formation of spanning clusters, suggesting that global connectivity is rarely realized. Local clusters can trigger hydraulic responses if their sizes are large enough. The connectivity reduction caused by fracture sealing can be reversed by significant stress perturbations, such as hydraulic fracturing. The well-connected and critically oriented fractures become critically stressed and slide because of the increased pore pressure. Partially sealed and mechanically stable fractures can also contribute to fluid flow by enlarging the stimulated reservoir volume (SRV). A new procedure to estimate the SRV size is proposed, and the estimated results are qualitatively consistent with microseismicity maps and field observations.

Correlation Analysis of Fracture Intensity Descriptors with Different Dimensionality in a Geomechanics-constrained 3D Fracture Network

Summary 3D intensity parameters of fracture networks cannot be measured directly and are usually correlated with the lower dimensionality intensity parameters, such as P21, P10. A comprehensive correlation analysis between lower dimensionality measures, P10, P20, P21, I2D (total number of intersections per unit area) and higher dimensionality ones, P30, P32, I3D (total number of intersections per unit volume) are investigated. We also correlate small cube samples and underlying fracture networks that represent cores or tunnels. The fracture networks are constrained by geomechanics principles and outcrop data to make them geologically meaningful. We show that orientation of fracture samples impacts correlations between the 2D and 3D parameters and samples parallel to the principal stresses yield better correlations. 3D intensity parameters, P30, I3D, and P32 can be predicted from 2D or small cube samples. However, 1D intensity P10 doesn't have a strong correlation with 3D intensity parameters. The size of cube samples should be larger than 10 percent of the original size to capture main structural information. Furthermore, the minimum number of samples to reach a good correlation from 2D and cube samples are 20 and 60 respectively.
