Anthraquinone-Catalyzed TEMPO Reduction to Realize Two-Electron Energy Storage of Poly(TEMPO-methacrylate)

2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) functional polymers are a type of organic electroactive material featuring a two-electron redox process. However, the electrochemical reduction of TEMPO (TEMPO•/–) is rarely adopted for energy storage due to its slow reaction kinetics. Here, we report using anthraquinone (AQ) as an organic redox mediator to promote TEMPO reduction kinetics. The catalytic effect of AQ is verified by electrochemical in situ FTIR spectroscopy in a model three-electrode system and further evidenced by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, providing a turnover frequency of 69 h–1. To exemplify the AQ catalytic effect in energy storage performance, we incorporate AQ groups into a typical TEMPO polymer (i.e., poly(TEMPO-methacrylate), PTMA). The AQ-catalyzed TEMPO reduction and AQ/carbon π–π interaction synergistically reduce the heterogeneous charge transfer resistance and accelerate the kinetics of the TEMPO•/– process in the PTMA electrode. The half-cell tests of the AQ functional PTMA show two prominent discharge plateaus with an initial capacity of 174 mAh g–1 and a 0.18% capacity loss per cycle. Moreover, the discharge capacity based on the TEMPO•/– couple is about 85 mAh g–1, 30% higher than that of the pristine PTMA. This new strategy could be widely applied to various organic redox systems to enhance their electrochemical kinetics and particularly improve the energy storage performance of organic polymer redox materials.

Research on Mechanical Properties of High-Pressure Anhydrite Based on First Principles

This article focuses on the elucidation of a three-dimensional model of the structure of anhydrite crystal (CaSO4). The structure parameters of anhydrite crystal were obtained by means of first principles after structure optimization at 0~120 MPa. In comparison with previous experimental and theoretical calculation values, the results we obtained are strikingly similar to the previous data. The elastic constants and physical parameters of anhydrite crystal were also studied by the first-principles method. Based on this, we further studied the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of anhydrite crystal, the anisotropy factor, the speed of sound, the minimum thermal conductivity and the hardness of the material. It was shown that the bulk modulus and Poisson’s ratio of anhydrite crystal rose slowly with increasing pressure. The anisotropy characteristics of the Young’s modulus and shear modulus of anhydrite crystal were consistent under various pressure levels, while the difference in the anisotropy characteristics of the bulk modulus appeared. The acoustic velocities of anhydrite crystal tended to be stable with increasing pressure. The minimum thermal conductivity remained relatively unchanged with increasing pressure. However, the material hardness declined gradually with increasing pressure.

Thermal Environment and Energy Performance of a Typical Classroom Building in a Hot-Humid Region: A Case Study in Guangzhou, China

Buildings and the construction sector account substantially for global energy consumption. In hot-humid areas of China, suboptimal thermal comfort in classrooms has heightened their cooling load and energy consumption. It is necessary to renovate the buildings of outdated code according to the current weather conditions to save energy. This study thus aimed to examine the thermal effects of such designs on the cooling load, based on an actual classroom building during summers in hot-humid southern China. Using air temperature and PMV values to evaluate thermal comfort, this study conducted simulation through EnergyPlus and DesignBuilder. The resultant updated typical meteorological year (TMY) and the monthly and hourly analyses of indoor thermal comfort revealed persistent classroom overheating. To mitigate the cooling load, numerous design variables were investigated: space form, roofing, external walls, windows, and shading devices. Evaluative comparisons found that appropriate choice of external windows and shading devices represented the two most effective strategies in mitigating the cooling load. Furthermore, jointly applying effective retrofit strategies to the building yielded a favorable reduction in the annual cooling energy consumption by 16.6%. The findings herein are envisioned to provide evidence-based referential guidance for building designs for classrooms in a hot-humid climate.

A long-life lithium-oxygen battery via a molecular quenching/mediating mechanism

The advancement of lithium-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries has been hindered by challenges including low discharge capacity, poor energy efficiency, severe parasitic reactions, etc. We report an Li-O 2 battery operated via a new quenching/mediating mechanism that relies on the direct chemical reactions between a versatile molecule and superoxide radical/Li 2 O 2 . The battery exhibits a 46-fold increase in discharge capacity, a low charge overpotential of 0.7 V, and an ultralong cycle life >1400 cycles. Featuring redox-active 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy moieties bridged by a quenching-active perylene diimide backbone, the tailor-designed molecule acts as a redox mediator to catalyze discharge/charge reactions and serves as a reusable superoxide quencher to chemically react with superoxide species generated during battery operation. The all-in-one molecule can simultaneously tackle issues of parasitic reactions associated with superoxide radicals, singlet oxygen, high overpotentials, and lithium corrosion. The molecular design of multifunctional additives combining various capabilities opens a new avenue for developing high-performance Li-O 2 batteries.

High-Performance Fullerene-Free Polymer Solar Cells Featuring Efficient Photocurrent Generation from Dual Pathways and Low Nonradiative Recombination Loss

Efficient charge generation is a prerequisite to achieve high power conversion efficiency (PCE) in organic/polymer solar cells (OSCs/PSCs), which involves photoinduced electron transfer and/or hole transfer between the donor/acceptor interface upon photoexcitation. A high yield of charge from both processes usually requires sufficient energy offset between the donor and acceptor for charge separation, fast transport, and extraction for charge collection, as well as significant absorption complementation to maximize photon harvest. Here we demonstrate highly efficient PSCs with efficient dual photocurrent generation pathways from a blend of a polymer donor and two narrow-bandgap nonfullerene acceptors, with an outstanding certified PCE of 13.0% (verified as 12.5%) in PSCs with single-junction device architecture. The devices from these material systems show nonradiative recombination loss of ∼0.22–0.24 V, one of the smallest values for OSCs achieved so far and comparable to those of solar cells based on monocrystalline Si or metal-halide perovskites. This study highlights that dual charge generation pathways with high yield and strongly reduced voltage loss are indispensable for further increasing the PCE of OSCs.

A new acceptor–donor–acceptor-structured nonfullerene acceptor, 2,2′-((2Z,2′Z)-(((4,4,9,9-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-4,9-dihydro-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene-2,7-diyl)bis(4-((2-ethylhexyl)oxy)thiophene-4,3-diyl))bis(methanylylidene))bis(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile (i-IEICO-4F), is designed and synthesized via main-chain substituting position modification of 2-(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene)dimalononitrile. Unlike its planar analogue IEICO-4F with strong absorption in the near-infrared region, i-IEICO-4F exhibits a twisted main-chain configuration, resulting in 164 nm blue shifts and leading to complementary absorption with the wide-bandgap polymer (J52). A high solution molar extinction coefficient of 2.41 × 105 M–1 cm–1, and sufficiently high energy of charge-transfer excitons of 1.15 eV in a J52:i-IEICO-4F blend were observed, in comparison with those of 2.26 × 105 M–1 cm–1 and 1.08 eV for IEICO-4F. A power conversion efficiency of 13.18% with an open-circuit voltage (0.849 V), a short-circuit current density of 22.86 mA cm–2, and a fill factor of 67.9% were recorded in J52:i-IEICO-4F-based polymer solar cells (PSCs), demonstrating that this main-chain twisted strategy can be a guideline that facilitates the development of new acceptors to maximize the efficiency in PSCs.
