Early warning of snow-caused disasters in pastoral areas on the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract. This study develops a model for early warning of snow-caused livestock disasters on a county basis and proposes a method of qualitative risk assessment of snow disasters at 500 m resolution for pastoral areas on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Data used for the model development include remote sensing data, statistical data of weather, livestock, and social economy, and 45 typical snow disaster cases from 2000 to 2010. The principal component analysis (PCA) approach is used to choose 7 crucial factors that contribute over 85% of information for early warning snow disasters on the TP. They are mean annual probability of snow disaster, number of snow-covered days, livestock stocking rate, continual days of mean daily temperature below −10 °C, grassland burial index, rate of snow-covered grassland, and per livestock gross domestic product. The chosen 411 cases from 2008 to 2010 are used to validate the prediction results from the developed early warning model, with an overall accuracy of 85.64% in predicting snow disasters and no disasters. This suggests that the early warning approach developed in the study has operational potential for predicting snow disasters on the TP.

Does Technological Intensity Matter for Global Cross‐Border Mergers and Acquisitions in Manufacturing, 1998–2018?

Abstract Despite being a key feature of the globalising world since the 1980s, the patterns and relationships between acquirer and target firms in cross‐border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) have only gained attention in recent years. By examining the data between 1998 and 2018 through multinomial logistic regression models, this paper investigates the goodness of match on technological intensity (the closeness of technological capabilities) between acquirer and target firms and the effects of geographical, cultural and institutional proximity in global cross‐border M&As in manufacturing sectors. Our results suggest that firms are more likely to acquire overseas counterparts with similar levels of technological intensity in manufacturing. Moreover, geographical proximity is significant in the M&As of target firms in low‐tech and medium‐low‐tech sectors, while cultural and institutional proximity matter for cross‐border M&As among medium‐high‐tech and high‐tech firms. High‐tech acquirer firms in advanced economies tend to acquire their high‐tech counterparts located in larger economies, while technological intensity is more important for high‐tech acquirer firms based in non‐advanced economies, as the closeness of technological knowledge with potential target firms allows them to generate potential synergies and overcome cultural gaps and foreignness in distant host countries.

Snow cover is an important fact for regional climate change studies, agriculture, and water source management. Satellite-based snow measurements have revolutionized the monitoring of spatiotemporal variation of snow cover in complex natural conditions at regional and global scales. This chaper introduces the principle of optical remote sensing snow cover detection and the MODIS standard snow cover products, summarizes the recent efforts and improvements on reducing cloud contamination and increasing snow mapping accuracy in all-sky conditions, and finally, illustrates the spatiotemporal variatons of snow cover and its applications in the Tibetan Plateau and a few other places.

Remote sensing for snow hydrology in China: challenges and perspectives

Snow is one of the most important components of the cryosphere. Remote sensing of snow focuses on the retrieval of snow parameters and monitoring of variations in snow using satellite data. These parameters are key inputs for hydrological and atmospheric models. Over the past 30 years, the field of snow remote sensing has grown dramatically in China. The 30-year achievements of research in different aspects of snow remote sensing in China, especially in (1) methods of retrieving snow cover, snow depth/snow water equivalent, and grain size and (2) applications to snowmelt runoff modeling, snow response on climate change, and remote sensing monitoring of snow-caused disasters are reviewed/summarized. The importance of the first remote sensing experiment on snow parameters at the upper reaches of the Heihe River Basin, in 2008, is also highlighted. A series of experiments, referred to as the Cooperative Observation Series for Snow (COSS), focus on some key topics on remote sensing of snow. COSS has been implemented for 3 years and will continue in different snow pattern regions of China. The snow assimilation system has been established in some regions using advanced ensemble Kalman filters. Finally, an outlook for the future of remote sensing of snow in China is given.

Proximity and cross-border acquisitions of technology assets by firms in latecomer economies: a study of Chinese firms, 2001-2018

We propose an analytical framework to examine how various dimensions of proximity between home and host countries could account for the trajectories and specificities of cross-border acquisitions of technology assets (CATAs) conducted by acquirer firms in latecomer economies. As Chinese firms have been increasingly using CATAs as a mean to catch up with their counterparts in advanced economies, we referred to their acquisition records to illustrate the applicability of the proposed framework. Based on a compiled dataset of the number of CATA transactions from 2001 to 2018, this paper examines the effects of various dimensions of proximity on the spatio-temporal patterns of Chinese CATAs using negative binomial regression models. Our findings demonstrate that the difference in governance between China and host countries (institutional proximity), the size of overseas Chinese population in host countries (social proximity), and the value of import from host countries (economic proximity) have significant effects on the propensity of Chinese firms to engage in CATAs. Physical distance and cultural gap between China and host countries, however, have no significant impact on CATAs. Further examination of the results reveals that Chinese firms tend to acquire target firms outright in culturally distant host countries to reduce the risk of their overseas acquisition in CATAs. In addition, we also found that there is a dynamic relationship between different dimensions of proximity and CATAs: from the relative importance of economic proximity between 2001 and 2012 to the rising influence of social and institutional proximity between 2013 and 2018 on CATAs.

Alpine Grassland Reviving Response to Seasonal Snow Cover on the Tibetan Plateau

Season snow cover plays an important role in vegetation growth in alpine regions. In this study, we analyzed the spatial and temporal variations in seasonal snow cover and the start of the growing season (SOS) of alpine grasslands and preliminarily studied the mechanism by which snow cover affects SOS changes by modifying the soil temperature (ST) and soil moisture (SM) in spring. The results showed that significant interannual trends in the SOS, snow end date (SED), snow cover days (SCD), ST, and SM existed over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) in China from 2000 to 2020. The SOS advanced by 2.0 d/10 a over the TP over this period. Moreover, the SOS showed advancing trends in the eastern and central parts of the TP and a delayed trend in the west. The SED and SCD exhibited an advancing trend and a decreasing trend in high-elevation areas, respectively, and the opposite trends in low-elevation areas. The ST showed a decreasing trend in low-elevation areas and an increasing trend in high-elevation areas. The SM tended to increase in most areas. The effects of the seasonal snow cover on the ST and SM indirectly influenced the SOS of alpine grasslands. The delayed SEDs and more SCD observed herein could provide increasingly wet soil conditions optimal for the advancement of the SOS, while less snow and shorter snow seasons could delay the SOS of alpine grasslands on the TP.

Retrieving Snow Depth Information From AMSR2 Data for Qinghai–Tibet Plateau

Passive microwave data have been extensively used for snow depth (SD) inversion, but their accuracy has large error in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Thus, there is still room for improvement in regional SD inversion. Ground-measured SD data combined with elevation, longitude, and land cover data were used to develop a multifactor SD inversion model based on Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) over the QTP. The SD inversion model and the AMSR2 SD product were validated and compared using the meteorological stations and ground-measured SD over the QTP at the same time. The results show that the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the novel model developed in this study is approximately 5 cm, which is much better than the accuracy of the AMSR2 SD product (11-13 cm) released by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. When the ground-measured SD is less than 30 cm, the RMSE and the mean absolute error of the developed model are below 7 and 6 cm, respectively, and the BIAS is approximately 1 cm. The SD inversion results are poor in the western part of the plateau due to the complex terrain and thick snow cover, and its RMSE is greater than 15 cm. In conclusion, this novel SD inversion model is more applicable and accurate than the AMSR2 SD products.
