Composition of the depleted mantle

We present an estimate for the composition of the depleted mantle (DM), the source for mid‐ocean ridge basalts (MORBs). A combination of approaches is required to estimate the major and trace element abundances in DM. Absolute concentrations of few elements can be estimated directly, and the bulk of the estimates is derived using elemental ratios. The isotopic composition of MORB allows calculation of parent‐daughter ratios. These estimates form the “backbone” of the abundances of the trace elements that make up the Coryell‐Masuda diagram (spider diagram). The remaining elements of the Coryell‐Masuda diagram are estimated through the composition of MORB. A third group of estimates is derived from the elemental and isotopic composition of peridotites. The major element composition is obtained by subtraction of a low‐degree melt from a bulk silicate Earth (BSE) composition. The continental crust (CC) is thought to be complementary to the DM, and ratios that are chondritic in the CC are expected to also be chondritic in the DM. Thus some of the remaining elements are estimated using the composition of CC and chondrites. Volatile element and noble gas concentrations are estimated using constraints from the composition of MORBs and ocean island basalts (OIBs). Mass balance with BSE, CC, and DM indicates that CC and this estimate of the DM are not complementary reservoirs.

Effects of simple acid leaching of crushed and powdered geological materials on high‐precision Pb isotope analyses

Abstract We present new results of simple acid leaching experiments on the Pb isotope composition of USGS standard reference material powders and on ocean island basalt whole rock splits and powders. Rock samples were leached with cold 6 N HCl in an ultrasonic bath, then on a hot plate, and washed with ultrapure H 2 O before sample digestion in HF‐HNO 3 and chromatographic purification of Pb. Lead isotope analyses were measured by Tl‐doped MC‐ICPMS. Intrasession and intersession analytical reproducibilities of repeated analyses of both synthetic Pb solutions and Pb from single digests of chemically processed natural samples were generally better than 100 ppm (2 SD). The comparison of leached and unleached samples shows that leaching consistently removes variable amounts of contaminants that differ in Pb isotopic composition for different starting materials. For repeated digests of a single sample, analyses of leached samples reproduce better than those of unleached ones, confirming that leaching effectively removes most of the heterogeneously distributed extraneous Pb. Nevertheless, the external reproducibility of leached samples is still up to an order of magnitude worse than that of Pb solution standards (∼100 ppm). More complex leaching methods employed by earlier studies yield Pb isotope ratios within error of those produced by our method and at similar levels of reproducibility, demonstrating that our simple leaching method is as effective as more complex leaching techniques. Therefore, any Pb isotope heterogeneity among multiple leached digests of samples in excess of the external reproducibility is attributed to inherent isotopic heterogeneity of the sample. The external precision of ∼100 ppm (2 SD) achieved for Pb isotope ratio determination by Tl‐doped MC‐ICPMS is thus sufficient for most rocks. The full advantage of the most precise Pb isotope analytical methods is only realized in cases where the natural isotopic heterogeneity among samples in a studied suite is substantially below 100 ppm.

Earth Mantle's Isotopic Record of Progressive Chemical Depletion

Abstract Mid ocean ridge basalts are partial melts of mantle rocks that have become incompatible element depleted prior to recent sub‐ridge melting. This prior extent of melt extraction and concomitant incompatible element depletion is often inferred from the radiogenic isotope ratios of ridge basalts, such as hafnium and neodymium. However, hafnium isotope ratios by far exceeding those in ridge basalts are observed sporadically in exposed mantle rocks, abyssal peridotites. At least locally, therefore, Earth's mantle has evolved with much larger extents of incompatible element depletion over geologic time periods (10 8 –10 9 years) than inferred from ridge basalts. Here we show that such “ultra‐depleted” hafnium isotope signatures also characterize peridotites exposed at the Doldrums Fracture Zone in the equatorial Mid Atlantic. These peridotites are closely associated with peridotites characterized by hafnium‐neodymium isotope ratios similar to ridge basalts, but extensive incompatible element depletion. Our results demonstrate that Earth mantle's isotopic record of prior melt extraction is dampened by ubiquitous past and recent reaction with migrating melts. Hence, a better understanding of chemically reactive flow is required for deducing the mantle's rate of incompatible element depletion by recurring processing through melting regions in the shallow mantle, which is the driving force for silicate Earth evolution. Ultimately, better constraining the rate of incompatible element depletion from Earth's mantle is therefore of first‐order importance for understanding our planet's basic mode of operation.
