Light Mo Isotopes of Post‐Collisional Ultrapotassic Rocks in Southern Tibet Derived From Subducted Indian Continental Crust

Abstract Recycling of molybdenum isotopes in continental subduction zones remains debated. In this contribution, we re‐visit the Mo isotope compositions of the Sailipu post‐collisional ultrapotassic rocks in the Himalaya‐southern Tibet orogen. These ultrapotassic rocks have very varying δ 98/95 Mo values of −0.66 to −0.07‰ and Mo/Ce ratios of 0.0008–0.005, which are lower than those of mid‐ocean ridge basalts (MORB; δ 98/95 Mo = −0.20 ± 0.06‰, and Mo/Ce = 0.03) and oceanic subduction‐related (i.e., mantle source involving fluids, residual slab, or oceanic sediments) magmatic rocks (e.g., modern arc lavas, Cenozoic OIB‐type basalts in eastern China and the central Mariana Trough basalts in the back‐arc basin, syn‐collisional andesitic rocks in southern Tibet). Combined with the light Mo isotopes of the Himalayan schists and gneisses, we suggest that the light Mo isotopic signature of the Sailipu ultrapotassic rocks is derived from subducted Indian continental crust. This is consistent with the extremely low δ 11 B (−17.4 to −9.7‰) and B/Nb (0.16–1) values and enriched Sr‐Nd‐Pb isotopes of the Sailipu ultrapotassic rocks. Thus, this study reveals the recycling of light Mo‐B isotopes during continental subduction and demonstrates that Mo‐B isotopes can effectively distinguish between continental and oceanic subduction.

The factors controlling along-arc and across-arc variations of primitive arc magma compositions: A global perspective

Arc volcanism is a key process influencing Earth’s climate, continental growth, and the formation of mineral deposits. Therefore in this contribution, we have compiled whole-rock geochemistry of frontal arc and rear-/back-arc basalts, crustal thickness, and slab parameters (e.g., slab age, slab dip, and convergence velocity) from global convergent margins to investigate the factors controlling along-arc and across-arc variations. Crustal thickness or lithosphere thickness plays a dominant role in elements immobile in aqueous fluids (e.g., Zr/Yb and Nb/Yb). The effect is imposed through mantle partial melting for both frontal arc and rear-/back-arc rocks. Slab thermal structure also affects these immobile elements and gives rise to along-arc variations. Both slab sediment and altered oceanic crust can melt especially in hot subduction zones which yield across-arc variations (e.g., Nd isotope). Aqueous fluids (represented by element ratios such as Ba/Nb and Sr/Nd) also show across-arc variations as they decrease toward rear-/back-arc. This meanwhile decreases mantle wedge melting as rear-/back-arcs show higher Zr/Yb and Nb/Yb. However, no correlations between aqueous fluids and slab parameters suggest aqueous fluids in arc rocks are controlled by complex processes. We summarize factors such as slab alteration, slab dehydration, and mantle metasomatism might impose an effect on the content of fluid mobile elements in arc rocks.

Paleocene (c. 62 Ma) Leucogranites in Southern Lhasa, Tibet: Products of Syn-collisional Crustal Anatexis during Slab Roll-back?

Voluminous peraluminous leucogranites are common in large-scale orogenic belts and are crucial in gaining a fuller understanding of the related geodynamic process. However, the origin of such syn-collisional leucogranites remains highly controversial. In this contribution, we report petrological and geochemical data for Paleocene (c. 63 Ma) garnet-bearing, two-mica granites and associated biotite granites from the Gangdese batholith in southern Tibet. The Zhengga biotite granites have high SiO2 (70–73 wt %) and low MgO (0·4–0·7 wt %) contents with initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0·7049–0·7050, εNd(t) values of +0·5 to +1·2 and zircon δ18O values of 5·6–6·9‰, similar to most early Paleocene granitoids in southern Lhasa. These geochemical characteristics suggest that the Zhengga biotite granites were derived from a crustal source that mixed with variable amounts of Gangdese juvenile lower crust and minor ancient crust-derived melts. The Zhengga peraluminous, garnet-bearing, two-mica granites have similar Sr–Nd–O isotope compositions to the biotite granites (0·7037–0·7050, +0·4 to +0·8, 5·5–7·3‰, respectively) as well as higher SiO2 (73–76 wt %) and lower TiO2 (<0·06 wt %), MgO (<0·3 wt %), Fe2O3T (<2 wt %) and CaO (<0·7 wt %) contents. These most probably represent highly evolved biotite granite magmas that differentiated in the mid-crust. The first contact of India with Asia appears to have occurred in central Lhasa during the early Paleocene (65–63 Ma) and led to crustal thickening and cessation of magmatism. Early Paleocene slab roll-back would have significantly enhanced asthenospheric corner flow and supplied a long-lived heat source for coeval crustal anatexis and metamorphism in southern Lhasa during the early phase of continental collision. Similar interaction between continental collision and oceanic subduction may also occur in other large-scale convergence zones in which the lithosphere and crust are anomalously hot.

Subduction Erosion Revealed by Late Mesozoic Magmatism in the Gangdese Arc, South Tibet

Abstract Subduction of oceanic lithosphere can cause crustal growth and destruction, but whether this balancing act is common in a single fossil convergent system has been unclear. Here we report geochronologic‐geochemical‐isotopic data on Mesozoic igneous rocks in the central‐eastern Gangdese arc. Our results reveal: (a) A coupling of magmatic arc migration toward the continent interior with a marked incompatible enrichment of sub‐arc mantle magma sources; (b) numerous Late Cretaceous adakites were generated via combined partial melting of both eroded forearc crust debris and subducted oceanic crust; (c) the truncation of forearc crust and extremely short arc‐suture distance. Our work demonstrates that although there was significant vertical growth of juvenile crust throughout the Gangdese arc during the Late Mesozoic, a large amount of continental crust was returned back into the mantle through lateral subduction erosion at the same time. This study provides important insights into long‐term material recycling on Earth.

Geochemical constraints on the origin of late Cenozoic basalts in the Mt. Changbai volcanic field, NE China: evidence for crustal recycling

We conducted a systematic geochemical study of the Mt. Changbai basalts (MCBs) in NE China to better constrain their mantle sources and petrogenesis. The MCBs display ocean island basalt-like trace element patterns (e.g., positive Nb–Ta anomalies) and variable MgO contents (3.2–10.0 wt.%), trace element ratios (e.g., Ba/Nb and Rb/Nb), and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf isotopic ratios (87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.704497–0.705629; εNd(i) = – 2.8 to +3.3; 206Pb/204Pb(i) = 16.9–18.1; εHf = −1.2 to +6.2), which indicate derivation from a heterogeneous mantle source. The least evolved samples (MgO > 7 wt.%), with moderate Fe/Mn and FC3MS (defined as FeOT/CaO – 3MgO/SiO2) values, require a hybrid pyroxenite–peridotite mantle source. The isotopic compositions indicate the mantle source is a mixture between depleted mid-ocean ridge basalt mantle and two enriched mantle components. Our geochemical and published geophysical data indicate that these two enriched components are recycled ancient sediments and Pacific oceanic crust, which were derived from the mantle transition zone. An upwelling wet plume from the mantle transition zone transported these two enriched components into the asthenospheric mantle. These enriched components were then transformed into pyroxenite and/or eclogite through melt–rock reaction or mechanical mixing with asthenospheric mantle peridotite. We further propose that partial melting of this heterogeneous asthenospheric mantle containing fusible pyroxenite and/or eclogite (i.e., the enriched components) and refractory peridotite produced the MCBs.
