Considering the Adaptive Cycle and Resilience of the Ecosystem to Define Reference Conditions for Wetland Restoration

Abstract Ecosystem resilience to pressures expanding and contracting within the adaptive cycle as slow variables change. However, little is known about their role in defining reference conditions for wetland restoration. Here, we applied paleoecological data of two wetlands that have been degraded (Honghe, riparian peatland) and disappeared (Shenjiadian, valley peatland) to evaluate ecosystem resilience to anthropogenic pressures as the phases of the adaptive cycle progress. The slow variables of plants and diatoms gradually began to change from moisture to dry loving species under severe disturbances in the late 1970s. Then regime shift took place around 1990 CE (Current Era) based on a sequential T‐test analysis and F statistics on the slow variables. A drop in water level caused by human activities rather than climate moisture led to regime shifts in Honghe and Shenjiadian wetlands. Therefore, the ecosystem were in the conservation phase before the late 1970s, and were in the reorganization phase after 1990 CE. The ecosystems had high resilience and a stable state at the early conservation phase, and its characteristics can be used as reference conditions for wetland restoration. The reference water level was 11–13 cm and the NH 4 ‐N ranged from 0.8 to 1.2 mg/L. The dominant vegetation was Drepanocladus aduncus and the dominant diatom was Pinnularia brevicostata . The referred enrich factors of nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals were under 4.45, 2.12, and 1.11, respectively. Considering both adaptive cycle and resilience to define reference conditions can provide insight into the future restoration and management of wetland ecosystems worldwide.

Vegetation dynamics and its response to climate change during the past 2000 years along the Amur River Basin, Northeast China

The Amur River Basin is located in high latitudes, which is sensitive to the global climate change. However, only a few previous studies have tried to study the climate change in this region. To better understand the historical variation of vegetation and climate during the past 2000 years, we present a new palynological data from the Lesser Khingan Mountains, and compared the vegetation change along the Amur River Basin. It was possible to reconstruct climate based on vegetation composition before human disturbance. The results show that: the climate was moderately cold and humid during the 2000 to 700 cal yr BP, and the vegetation was mainly coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest, and the abundance of Cyperaceae was relatively high. After that, the temperature and humidity declined, corresponding to the Little Ice Age. And the vegetation types also obviously changed that the conifers expanded, and the contents of broad-leaved trees and herbaceous Cyperaceae decreased. Since about 150 cal yr BP, the climate tended to be warm which belonged to Current Warm Period, and the main vegetation type was the secondary forests. The spread of the Han farming culture accompanied by the territorial expansion of the Tang Dynasty to the Sanjiang Plain at around 1300 cal yr BP caused human disturbance occurred earlier in the Sanjiang Plain than the Greater and Lesser Khingan Mountains. Additionally, the anthropogenic activities obviously intensified during the past hundred years along the Amur River Basin.

A millennium of cold and humid climate decreased carbon accumulation in the subtropical monsoon peatland

In the subtropical monsoon region of China, the climate differs from that of most northern peatlands, where many peatlands have developed in mountainous areas. However, it remains unclear how the carbon dynamics of these subtropical peatlands respond to climate change. Here, we reconstructed the net carbon fluxes of a typical mountainous peatland in Tianmu Mountain, eastern China, over the past thousand years. Humidity and winter temperature are two important climatic factors influencing carbon accumulation (Deviance explained 77.2%) and drought promotes Qianmutian peatland initial development. Despite the decline in carbon accumulation over the last millennium, the peatland's net carbon balance remains in a 'carbon sink' state. This suggests that the risk of carbon release from the peatland carbon pool under natural climate change conditions is not substantial in the subtropical monsoon area.
