Electrolyte design or functional development is very effective at promoting the performance of sodium-ion batteries, which are attractive for electrochemical energy storage devices due to abundant sodium resources and low cost. The roadmap of the sodium ion batteries based on electrolyte materials was drawn firstly and shows that the electrolyte type decides the electrochemical window and energy density.

A Strain‐Relaxation Red Phosphorus Freestanding Anode for Non‐Aqueous Potassium Ion Batteries

Abstract Red phosphorus (RP), as a promising anode for potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs), and has attracted extensive attention due to its high theoretical capacity, low redox potential, and abundant natural sources. However, RP shows dramatic capacity decay and rapid structure degradation caused by huge volume expansion and poor electronic conductivity. Here, a volume strain‐relaxation electrode structure is reported, by encapsulating well‐confined amorphous RP in 3D interconnected sulfur, nitrogen co‐doped carbon nanofibers (denoted as RP@S‐N‐CNFs). In situ transmission electron microscopy and the corresponding chemo‐mechanical simulation reveal the excellent structural integrity and robustness of the N, S carbon matrix. As a freestanding anode for KIBs, the RP@S‐N‐CNFs electrode exhibits high reversible capacities (566.7 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 ) and extraordinary durability (282 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 2 A g −1 ). The highly reversible one‐electron transfer mechanism with a final discharge product of KP and faster kinetics are demonstrated through in situ characterizations and density functional theory calculations. This work sheds light on the rational design of large‐volume‐vibration type anodes for next‐generation high‐performance KIBs.

Temple occupation and the tempo of collapse at Angkor Wat, Cambodia

The 9th-15th century Angkorian state was Southeast Asia's greatest premodern empire and Angkor Wat in the World Heritage site of Angkor is one of its largest religious monuments. Here we use excavation and chronometric data from three field seasons at Angkor Wat to understand the decline and reorganization of the Angkorian Empire, which was a more protracted and complex process than historians imagined. Excavation data and Bayesian modeling on a corpus of 16 radiocarbon dates in particular demand a revised chronology for the Angkor Wat landscape. It was initially in use from the 11th century CE with subsequent habitation until the 13th century CE. Following this period, there is a gap in our dates, which we hypothesize signifies a change in the use of the occupation mounds during this period. However, Angkor Wat was never completely abandoned, as the dates suggest that the mounds were in use again in the late 14th-early 15th centuries until the 17th or 18th centuries CE. This break in dates points toward a reorganization of Angkor Wat's enclosure space, but not during the historically recorded 15th century collapse. Our excavation data are consistent with multiple lines of evidence demonstrating the region's continued ideological importance and residential use, even after the collapse and shift southward of the polity's capital. We argue that fine-grained chronological analysis is critical to building local historical sequences and illustrate how such granularity adds nuance to how we interpret the tempo of organizational change before, during, and after the decline of Angkor.

Moisture‐Assisted Preparation of Compact GaN:ZnO Photoanode Toward Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Developing strategies that can promote charge transportation in photodevices is crucial for achieving high solar energy conversion efficiency. Herein a moisture‐assisted nitridation approach is presented for the fabrication of efficient gallium‐zinc oxynitride (GaN:ZnO) photoanode with compact structure to facilitate the charge transportation. With moisture‐assisted nitridation, the charge separation efficiency and injection efficiency obtained on GaN:ZnO photoanode are significantly enhanced. Correspondingly, the photocurrent at 1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) has 18 folds improvement compared with that prepared without moisture assistance. Furthermore, via treating with HCl acid and modification with cobalt phosphate (CoPi) as a cocatalyst, state‐of‐the‐art photocurrent over 2.0 mA cm −2 is achieved on independent GaN:ZnO photoanode when bias is higher than 1.4 V vs RHE. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paradigm of moisture‐assisted preparing oxynitride‐based photoanode. The participation of moisture is found to improve the interconnection between adjacent GaN:ZnO nanoparticles as well as that between the GaN:ZnO film and the underlying substrate. Moreover, the volatilization of Zn can be substantially suppressed due to the modulation of reaction pathway by moisture. These two factors are confirmed to be the main reasons for the enhanced charge transportation and PEC performance obtained on GaN:ZnO photoanode.

High-quality monolayer superconductor NbSe2 grown by chemical vapour deposition

The discovery of monolayer superconductors bears consequences for both fundamental physics and device applications. Currently, the growth of superconducting monolayers can only occur under ultrahigh vacuum and on specific lattice-matched or dangling bond-free substrates, to minimize environment- and substrate-induced disorders/defects. Such severe growth requirements limit the exploration of novel two-dimensional superconductivity and related nanodevices. Here we demonstrate the experimental realization of superconductivity in a chemical vapour deposition grown monolayer material-NbSe2. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscope imaging reveals the atomic structure of the intrinsic point defects and grain boundaries in monolayer NbSe2, and confirms the low defect concentration in our high-quality film, which is the key to two-dimensional superconductivity. By using monolayer chemical vapour deposited graphene as a protective capping layer, thickness-dependent superconducting properties are observed in as-grown NbSe2 with a transition temperature increasing from 1.0 K in monolayer to 4.56 K in 10-layer.Two-dimensional superconductors will likely have applications not only in devices, but also in the study of fundamental physics. Here, Wang et al. demonstrate the CVD growth of superconducting NbSe2 on a variety of substrates, making these novel materials increasingly accessible.

MoS₂/TiO₂ Edge‐On Heterostructure for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Via edge engineering, a facile two-step method is demonstrated that produces solid edge-on junctions between TiO2 and few-layered MoS2 in large scale. MoS2/TiO2 edge-on heterostructures result in high conductive MoS2/TiO2 interfaces and optimized electron transport pathways that facilitate the electron–hole pair separation, leading to an efficient solar water splitting.
