Oriostoma (Gastropoda) with an in situ operculum from the Silurian of Indiana

Abstract A single specimen of Oriostoma globosum (von Schlotheim, 1820) from the Silurian-age (Wenlockian) Laurel Limestone in southeastern Indiana preserves a partial, multispiral operculum in situ within the aperture. Only eight specimens of in situ Oriostoma opercula have previously been illustrated from Canada and Europe, and this is the first from the United States. Oriostoma huntingtonensis Kindle, 1904, from younger Silurian (Ludlovian–Pridolian) strata in northern Indiana is considered a synonym of the more widespread O. globosum , and it was described as having associated loose multispiral calcareous opercula in the same strata.

Alaskodiscus, a new name for the Ordovician bellerophontoidean gastropod Alaskadiscus Rohr, Frýda and Blodgett, 2003

The Late Ordovician tropidodiscid gastropod Alaskadiscus , known only in two areas in Alaska, was named by Rohr, Frýda, and Blodgett (2003). Peter Wagner and Stephen K. Donovan have pointed out to us that the name was previously used for a Cambrian trilobite, Alaskadiscus Zhang, 1980. We propose the new name Alaskodiscus with the same type species, A. donensis Rohr, Frýda and Blodgett, 2003. We feel the similarity in names is not likely to cause undue confusion since the taxa are widely separated by phyla and age.

米国アラスカ州南部のグレイシャー・ベイ国立公園は，シルル紀の熱帯域の大陸棚から深い盆地にかけて堆積した厚い地層と，そのなかでの連続的な堆積相変化を観察する上で絶好の場所である。グレイシャー・ベイの氷河で削られた見事な露頭には非常に厚いシルル紀の地層が広大に露出している。それらは化石を多産する浅い陸棚相石灰岩から深い盆地の泥岩相へと側方に堆積相が連続的に変化する様子を明瞭に提示している。これらの地層から産する化石（二枚貝や巻貝など）は，北米（ローレンシア）大陸の内部に産する同地質時代の地層からの北米固有の群集とは大きく異なっている。このような特異な化石群集を含むアレクサンダー・テレーンは，もともと遠方より移動してきて，二次的に北米西岸へ衝突・合体した地塊と考えられている。

Silurian predator borings in the brachiopod Dicaelosia from the Canadian Arctic

Wenlockian (Silurian) age silicified brachiopods from the Canadian Arctic contain cylindrical boreholes with a mean diameter of 0.32 mm. The largest number of holes was found in the genus Dicaelosia. The presence of articulated specimens with a hole in only one valve and a high frequency of holes in the beak area indicates the work of an unknown, possibly soft-bodied, predator. This contrasts with recent reports which ascribe cylindrical borings to nonpredator origins. The location of the holes in relation to the inferred life position of the brachiopod suggests that the predator had an infaunal mode of life. Some borings may have been due to sediment boring annelids.

Late Leonardian Plants from West Texas: The Youngest Paleozoic Plant Megafossils in North America

Abundant Permian plant megafossils were discovered in the Del Norte Mountains of Brewster County, Trans-Pecos Texas. The flora is dominated by a new and distinctive type of gigantopteroid leaves. Marine invertebrates are closely associated, and this admixture of continental and marine fossils indicates a deltaic depositional setting, probably on the southern margin of the Permian Basin. Conodonts indicate correlation with the uppermost Leonardian Road Canyon Formation in the Glass Mountains. These are the youngest Paleozoic plant megafossils known in North America; they add an important paleontological element to the classic Permian area of this Continent.

However. five different groupings of snails predominantly rest their shell upon the substrate. One group, Xenophora-like in habit, lives with the base of the shell propped above the substrate by a frill or spines. Re-examination of the Silurian Euomphalopterus shows that the broad frill is not a selenizone as it has been most frequently interpreted. The broad frill may have served the function of propping the aperture above the substrate. All members of the Euomphalopteridae are reassigned. A review of Paleozoic gastropods suggests that this propping mode of life was adopted more than once by unrelated gastropods.
