Seasonal variations of global lightning activity extracted from Schumann resonances using a genetic algorithm method

A three‐dimensional Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) model of the Earth‐ionosphere cavity with a realistic conductivity profile is employed to study the global lightning activity using the observed intensity variations of Schumann resonances (SR). Comparison of the results derived from our FDTD model and the previous studies by other authors on related subjects shows that Schumann resonance is a good probe to indicate the seasonal variations of lightning activity in three main thunderstorm regions (Africa, southeast Asia, and South America). An inverse method based on genetic algorithms is developed to extract information on lightning intensity in these three regions from observed SR intensity data. Seasonal variations of the lightning activity in three thunderstorm centers are clearly observed in our results. Different SR frequency variations associated with seasonal variations of global lighting activity are also discussed.

The influence of circulation weather types on the exposure of the biosphere to atmospheric electric fields

Abstract We present an analysis of the impact of circulation weather types (CT) on a factor that might influence biological systems and the human condition, the electric state of the atmosphere. We present results on the influence of CT to the magnitude, the direction (positive or negative), the fluctuation magnitude, and the short-term peaks of the atmospheric electric field (potential gradient, PG), using data from a station in Greece. CTs with high vorticity centers over Greece are associated with high positive and negative excursions of the PG, higher PG variability, and rain events. CTs with thinner 850–500 hPa layer are associated with higher daily mean values of fair-weather PG. We also examine the influence of CT on the frequency and amplitude of the naturally occurring extremely low-frequency electric field fluctuations known as Schumann resonances (SR) using data from a station in Hungary. The first and second mode SR frequencies are increased during CTs associated with higher 500 hPa geopotential heights and higher 850–500 hPa layer thickness. This hints to a lower-upper atmosphere coupling. So, CTs not only influence the general temperature and humidity conditions to which the biosphere is exposed, but they also affect its exposure to atmospheric electric fields.

ELF Radio Waves in the Service of Studying the Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere System

At the lowest end of the radio spectrum, in the extremely low frequency (ELF) band (3 Hz -3 kHz), lightning is by far the most dominant source of natural electromagnetic (EM) waves, the energy of which completely fills the cavity formed by the Earth's surface and the lowest part of the ionosphere.Due to the very weak attenuation they suffer during their propagation in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide (about 0.5 dB/Mm), these EM waves can travel around the Earth several times before their energy is dissipated.Constructive interference of EM waves propagating in opposite directions from the same source (direct and antipodal waves) leads to the formation of global EM resonances, known as Schumann resonances (SRs), with resonance frequencies around 8, 14, 20, etc. Hz.While the EM radiation of the most powerful lightning strokes ("mesoscale lightning") can excite SRs on an individual basis (so called Q-bursts or SR transients), most of the "common" lightning strokes produce a quasisteady "background" field in which the individual pulses cannot be distinguished.

Solar radiation‐induced changes in ionospheric height and the Schumann resonance waveguide on different timescales

This study draws together the available observations in the Schumann resonance frequency range to examine the general issue of sensitivity of ionospheric height variations to changes in ionizing radiation from the Sun on different timescales. Ionospheric height can be formally defined, and two characteristic heights are recognized in the Schumann resonance frequency range. In general, order of magnitude changes in radiation are needed to cause relative changes in ionospheric height as large as 10%, as is the case on both the diurnal and 11‐year timescales. Changes in EUV radiation are probably insufficiently strong to account for either the 27‐day or the 11‐year variation in ionospheric height. More ionization‐effective X radiation is needed, but much smaller height changes are expected on the solar rotation timescale because the variations in X radiation on this timescale are only tens of percent and not orders of magnitude. The annual variation in radiation from the Sun is only 7%, with an expected height variation less than 100 m, and this remains to be verified by observations. The general insensitivity of the Schumann resonance cavity to changes in ionizing radiation lends stability to the medium that is valuable toward quantifying absolute changes in the global lightning activity on various timescales within the cavity.

Signatures of the day‐night asymmetry of the Earth‐ionosphere cavity in high time resolution Schumann resonance records

High time resolution Schumann resonance (SR) records are analyzed at a midlatitude (Nagycenk, 47.6°N, 16.7°E, Hungary) and a north polar (Hornsund, 77°N, 15.5°E, Spitsbergen) station from the point of view of the day‐night asymmetry of the Earth‐ionosphere cavity. The vertical electric field component, E Z , at Nagycenk in quasi‐minute time resolution exhibits jump‐like increases of SR amplitudes between the local ionospheric and surface sunrise times and sharp decreases between the local surface and ionospheric sunset times. These amplitude variations depend on frequency, increase with increasing mode number, and occur simultaneously in the three SR modes studied here. The duration of the sharp frequency‐dependent amplitude changes is generally less than 30 min. The accurate timing (“clock‐like accuracy”) of these sharp SR amplitude variations of about 12–25% in the local sunrise/sunset periods and their frequency dependence make these changes distinguishable from the amplitude variations related to the lightning source properties and strongly suggest an ionospheric origin for these sharp amplitude variations. The signature of the day‐night asymmetry of the Earth‐ionosphere cavity can also be found at Hornsund in the two short spring and autumn periods with alternating day and night periods every day, in the form of an enhanced day‐night contrast of the SR amplitudes with consistent frequency dependence for the first three SR modes.
