PALEOZOIC GRANITOID MAGMATISM OF THE URALS: THE REFLECTION OF THE STAGES OF THE GEODYNAMIC AND GEOCHEMICAL EVOLUTION OF A COLLISIONAL OROGEN

The Ural mobile belt is an intracontinental epioceanic orogen that has already gone through all stages of the geodynamic development. Igneous rocks formed during each stage are important indicators for understanding the evolution of this belt and determining potential ore contents of its segments. We consolidated large datasets on petrogeochemistry and isotope geochronology of the Paleozoic (490–250 Ma) granitoids associated with the opening and evolution of the Ural paleoocean and the subsequent formation of the collisional orogen. Using these data, we have revised the ages of several tectono-magmatic events, clarified the paleogeodynamic settings for the generation of granitoids of different compositions, and described the roles of mantle-crust interactions and the plume factor in the formation of the mature continental crust in the study area. The results can be useful for geological mapping and improving the assessment of the potential ore contents in granitoid complexes that differ in origin and composition.

DEVONIAN-CARBONIFEROUS MAGMATISM AND METALLOGENY IN THE SOUTH URAL ACCRETIONARY-COLLISIONAL SYSTEM

The oceanic stage in the history of the South Urals completed in the Ordovician – Early Silurian. The Ordovician through Devonian events in the region included the formation of an island arc in the East Ural zone from the Middle Ordovician to Silurian; westward motion of the subduction zone in the Late Silurian – Early Devonian and the origin of a trench along the Main Ural Fault and the Uraltau Uplift; volcanic eruptions and intrusions in the Magnitogorsk island arc system in the Devonian. The Middle-Late Paleozoic geodynamic evolution of uralides and altaides consisted in successive alternation of subduction and collisional settings at the continent-ocean transition. The greatest portion of volcanism in the major Magnitogorsk zone was associated with subduction and correlated in age and patterns of massive sulfide mineralization (VMS) with Early – Middle Devonian ore-forming events in Rudny Altai. Within-plate volcanism at the onset of volcanic cycles records the Early (D 1 e 2 ) and Middle (D 2 ef 2 ) Devonian slab break off. The volcanic cycles produced, respectively, the Buribay and Upper Tanalyk complexes with VMS mineralization in the Late Emsian; the Karamalytash complex and its age equivalents in the Late Eifelian – Early Givetian, as well as the lower Ulutau Formation in the Givetian. Slab break off in the Late Devonian – Early Carboniferous obstructed the Magnitogorsk island arc and supported asthenospheric diapirism. A new subduction zone dipping westward and the Aleksandrovka island arc formed in the Late Devonian – Early Carboniferous. The Early Carboniferous collision and another event of obstructed subduction led to a transform margin setting corresponding to postcollisional relative sliding of plates that produced another slab tear. Postcollisional magmatism appears as alkaline gabbro-granitic intrusives with related rich Ti-magnetite mineralization (C 1 ). Transform faulting persisted in the Middle Carboniferous through Permian, when the continent of Eurasia completed its consolidation. The respective metallogenic events included formation of Cu-Ni picritic dolerites (C 2–3 ), as well as large-scale gold and Mo-W deposits in granites (P 1–2 ).

Carbonate rocks from chromite-bearing sections of the Southern Urals: features of structure, composition and conditions of accumulation

Проведено петрографическое и геохимическое изучение известняков из маломощных прослоев среди хромитоносных терригенных отложений разрезов казанского яруса в Южном Предуралье. Установлено, что карбонатные породы из трёх разрезов (Сухой Изяк, Сабантуй и Кузьминовский известняковый карьер) представлены одним генетическим типом пород. Они отвечают микритовым и биокластово-микритовым известнякам структуры вакстоун, содержащим пелоиды, реликты мелководных морских организмов, и признаки развития микробиалитов. Литологические особенности свидетельствуют о кратковременной трансгрессии и установлении мелководно-морской литоральной обстановки на изучаемой территории в казанское время. Химический состав известняков подтверждает их генетическую близость, свидетельствуя о незначительных различиях во влиянии терригенно-глинистого или лагунно-хемогенного материала. Petrographic and geochemical study of limestones from thin interlayers among chromite-bearing terrigenous deposits of sections of the Kazanian stage in the Southern Urals was carried out. It is established that carbonate rocks from three sections (Sukhoy Izyak, Sabantuy and Kuzminovka limestone quarry) are represented by a single genetic type of rocks. They correspond to micrite and bioclast-micrite limestones of the wackestone structure containing peloids, relics of shallow-water marine organisms, and signs of development of microbialites. Lithological features indicate a short-term transgression and a shallow-sea littoral environment in the studied area during the Kazan time. The chemical composition of limestones confirms their genetic proximity, indicating minor differences in the influence of terrigenous-clay or lagoon-chemogenic material.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of the Aushkul, Kamatal and Shartym granite massifs (Balbuk comlex, Southern Urals)

The article discusses the petrographic, mineralogical and petrogeochemical features of alkaline granites of the Balbuk complex in three massifs - Aushkul, Kamatal and Shartym. The rocks of the massifs are similar in structural and textural features and mineral composition: they are composed of acidic plagioclase, potassium feldspar, quartz and muscovite. In the Aushkul massif, phenocrysts of potassium feldspar, plagioclase, quartz and primary oligoclase are found in the groundmass, while in the Kamatal and Shartym massifs only phenocrysts of altered plagioclase and quartz are developed, and secondary albite is present in the groundmass. The existing differences in the geochemistry of the rocks of the Aushkul massif in comparison with Kamatal and Shartym (depleted in barium and enriched in niobium) may be associated with minor differences in the composition of magmas and with the peculiarities of their fractionation in intermediate chambers (fractionation of alkali feldspar and Nb-containing phases).

Chromite Paleoplacer in the Permian Sediments at the East Edge of the East European Platform: Composition and Potential Sources

A chromite occurrence called the Sabantuy paleoplacer was discovered in the Southern Pre-Ural region, at the east edge of the East-European Platform in the transitional zone to the Ural Foredeep. A ca. 1 m-thick chromite-bearing horizon is traced at a depth of 0.7–1.5 m from the earth’s surface for the area of ca. 15,000 m2. The chromspinel content in sandstones reaches 30–35%, maximum values of Cr2O3 are 16–17 wt.%. The grain size of detrital chromspinel ranges from 0.15 to 0.25 mm. Subangular octahedral crystals dominate; rounded grains and debris are rare. The composition of detrital chromspinel varies widely and is constrained by the substitution of Al3+ and Cr3+, Fe2+ and Mg2+ cations. Chemically, low-Al (Al2O3 = 12 wt.%) and high-Cr (Cr2O3 = 52–56 wt.%) chromspinel prevail. The compositional analysis using discrimination diagrams showed that most chromites correspond to mantle peridotites of subduction settings. Volcanic rocks could be an additional source for detrital chromites. It is confirmed by compositions of monomineralic, polymineralic and melt inclusions in chromspinels. The presented data indicates that ophiolite peridotites and related chromite ore associated with oceanic and island-arc volcanic rocks, widespread in the Ural orogen, could be the main sources of the detrital chromspinel of the Sabantuy paleoplacer.

В статье представлены предварительные результаты изучения органических остатков, собранных из трех карбонатно-терригенных разрезов казанского и уржумского ярусов Южного Предуралья – «Сухой Изяк», «Федоровка» и «Южно-Батыровский». На данном этапе исследований удалось выделить два разновозрастных комплекса фауны: нижнеказанский, содержащий морские ассоциации остракод, двустворчатых моллюсков и брахиопод, и уржумский, включающий неморской (континентальный) комплекс остракод. The presents preliminary results of the organic fossils study from thee terrigenous-limestone sections of the Kazanian and Urzhumian stages of the Southern Pre-Urals – «Sukhoy Izyak», 2 – «Fedorovka» and «Yuzhno-Batyrovskii». Two uneven-aged faunal assemblages were identified: the Lower Kazanian, which contains marine associations of ostracods, bivalves, and brachiopods, and the Urzhumian, which includes a non-marine (continental) ostracod assemblage.

ARSENIC APATITE FROM THE CALCAREOUS SKARNS OF THE KANAKAY FE-DEPOSIT (SOUTHERN URALS)

In the near-ore marble of the Kanakai skarn-magnetite deposit, arsenic apatite was found, which forms small euhedral and subhedral crystals confined to cracks. The As2O3 content in it reaches 0.9 wt %. % (As 0.04 apfu), and stable impurities of SiO2 (0.35–1.33 wt %), SO3 (0.28–0.63 wt %), and Cl (0.09–0.30 wt %) are typical. It could have crystallized into the post-ore stage when the rocks underwent to hydrothermal fluids relatively rich in As, S, and Cl.
